Infrastructure maintenance, encompassing routine upkeep, repairs, and rehabilitation, is essential for ensuring the reliability, safety, and longevity of infrastructure assets (Olowoyo et al., 2020). However, in many urban areas, including Minna, Niger State, Nigeria, maintenance practices are often inadequate, leading to the deterioration of infrastructure and subsequent negative impacts on urban livability and economic productivity.

Minna, the capital city of Niger State, is experiencing rapid urbanization and population growth, placing significant strain on its infrastructure systems (Dada et al., 2017). With inadequate maintenance, infrastructure assets such as roads, bridges, water supply networks, and electricity grids are prone to deterioration, resulting in increased costs, disruptions to services, and safety hazards for residents (Idachaba et al., 2018). Addressing the maintenance needs of urban infrastructure in Minna is thus imperative for sustaining the city’s growth, improving the quality of life for its residents, and promoting economic development.

Despite the critical importance of infrastructure maintenance, there is a lack of comprehensive assessment and understanding of maintenance practices and challenges in Minna. Existing literature often focuses on broader issues of urban infrastructure or specific sectors, neglecting the nuances of maintenance practices and their implications for infrastructure sustainability (Adeoti et al., 2018). Therefore, conducting an assessment of urban infrastructure maintenance in Minna is essential for identifying existing deficiencies, addressing critical issues, and informing strategies to enhance maintenance effectiveness and sustainability.By examining the state of urban infrastructure maintenance in Minna, this study aims to provide valuable insights into current practices, challenges, and opportunities for improvement. The findings will contribute to the development of informed policies, strategies, and interventions aimed at optimizing maintenance efforts, ensuring the resilience and longevity of infrastructure assets, and fostering sustainable urban development in Minna, Niger State.

1.2     Statement of the Problem

The urban infrastructure in Minna, Niger State, Nigeria, is essential for the city’s functionality, economic vitality, and quality of life for its residents. However, there is a lack of comprehensive assessment and understanding of the maintenance practices and challenges associated with urban infrastructure in Minna. The effectiveness of maintenance efforts, including routine upkeep, repairs, and rehabilitation, directly impacts the reliability, safety, and longevity of infrastructure assets such as roads, bridges, water supply systems, and electricity grids. Without proper maintenance, urban infrastructure may deteriorate rapidly, leading to increased costs, disruptions to services, and safety hazards for residents. Therefore, there is an urgent need to assess the state of urban infrastructure maintenance in Minna to identify gaps, address critical issues, and develop strategies for improving maintenance practices and ensuring the long-term sustainability of infrastructure assets in the city.

Objectives:

  5. To develop actionable recommendations and strategies for improving urban infrastructure maintenance practices in study area.

1.9    Background of study area

Minna, the capital city of Niger State, Nigeria, has a rich historical background that dates back to pre-colonial times. The area that is now known as Minna was originally inhabited by various indigenous ethnic groups, including the Gbagyi, Kamuku, Nupe, and Gwari peoples. These groups engaged in agriculture, trade, and craftsmanship, contributing to the region’s cultural and economic diversity.

In the 19th century, Minna and its surrounding areas became part of the Nupe Kingdom, which was one of the prominent pre-colonial states in northern Nigeria. The Nupe Kingdom, with its capital in Bida, exerted influence over a vast territory, including Minna, through its system of governance, trade networks, and military prowess.

During the colonial era, Minna, like many other parts of Nigeria, came under British rule. The British established administrative structures and introduced modern systems of governance, education, and commerce in the region.
