In recent years, the increasing prevalence of identity theft has prompted significant concern within both academic and practical domains. Identity theft is characterized by the unauthorized use of another individual’s personal information, often facilitated through digital means. As organizations and educational institutions increasingly rely on online platforms for learning and administration, the vulnerability to identity theft has grown, necessitating enhanced security measures. This literature review explores the integration of smart learning management systems (LMS) designed to mitigate identity theft risks in educational settings, highlighting current research, methodologies, and technological advancements.

Research indicates that traditional LMS platforms often lack robust security features, making them susceptible to breaches. For instance, recent studies have shown that many educational institutions have inadequate measures in place to protect sensitive student information, leading to significant data leaks and security incidents (Wang et al., 2021). This has resulted in a heightened demand for smart LMS that incorporate advanced security protocols, such as biometric authentication, encryption, and artificial intelligence-driven monitoring systems, to better protect user identities (Almeida & Azevedo, 2020). These innovations not only enhance security but also improve user trust and engagement in online learning environments.

Artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in developing enhanced LMS for identity protection. Machine learning algorithms can analyze user behavior and detect anomalies that may indicate fraudulent activity. For instance, Gupta et al. (2022) proposes an adaptive security model that employs AI to monitor login patterns and flag suspicious access attempts. This proactive approach enables institutions to respond swiftly to potential identity theft incidents, thereby reducing the risk of data breaches. 1.2. Statement of the Problem

As educational institutions increasingly adopt digital solutions for course management, the vulnerabilities associated with inadequate security measures have become alarmingly evident. Students’ personal information, including social security numbers, addresses, and academic records, is often stored on these platforms, making them prime targets for cybercriminals. The current gap in robust identity protection mechanisms in many learning management systems (LMS) poses a critical challenge that necessitates urgent attention.

Despite the advancements in technology, many traditional LMS lack the necessary security features to safeguard sensitive student data effectively. Numerous studies indicate that these platforms are often designed with a primary focus on functionality and user experience, with security as an afterthought (Wang et al., 2021). This oversight has led to numerous incidents of data breaches, where unauthorized access to personal information has compromised the integrity of educational institutions. Such breaches not only undermine student trust but also expose institutions to legal ramifications and reputational damage.

Furthermore, the growing sophistication of cyber threats exacerbates the problem of identity theft in educational contexts. Cybercriminals employ advanced techniques, such as phishing and social engineering, to manipulate users into revealing sensitive information. Gupta et al. (2022) highlight that students, often lacking awareness of these threats, can unwittingly become victims, resulting in severe consequences that extend beyond immediate financial loss. The problem of identity theft within educational contexts is multifaceted, involving a combination of technological vulnerabilities, inadequate user education, and regulatory challenges. The aim of the study is to examine an enhanced Smart Learning Management System for Mitigating Identity Theft. The specific objectives are:

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of the enhanced system in reducing instances of identity theft among users.
  3. To find out the challenges of using learning management systems.

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

1.8.  Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Enhanced: This refers to something that has been improved or upgraded to be more effective, efficient, or valuable. It often involves adding features, capabilities, or qualities that elevate its overall performance or experience.
  2. Smart Learning Management System (LMS): A Smart LMS is a digital platform designed to deliver, track, and manage training and education. It typically incorporates advanced features like adaptive learning, analytics, and AI to personalize learning experiences, improve engagement, and provide insights into learner progress.
  3. Mitigating: This term means to make something less severe, serious, or painful. In various contexts, it refers to actions taken to reduce risks, negative impacts, or harmful effects, such as those associated with cybersecurity threats or environmental issues.
  4. Identity Theft: This is a crime where someone unlawfully obtains and uses another person’s personal information, typically for financial gain. It can involve stealing credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, or other identifying information, leading to financial loss and damage to the victim’s credit.
  5. LMS (Learning Management System): This is a software application or platform used for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting, and delivery of educational courses or training programs. It allows educators and organizations to manage online learning and provides tools for learners to access resources and complete courses.
