INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

According to Epstein (2011), parental involvement encompasses a wide range of activities, including parental expectations, communication with teachers, involvement in school activities, and the creation of a conducive learning environment at home. The influence of parental involvement on academic performance is seen in various settings, with high levels of engagement often correlating with improved academic outcomes. This relationship has been particularly significant in senior secondary schools, where students are preparing for critical examinations such as the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Several studies have documented the positive effects of parental involvement on student academic success. A study by Jeynes (2012) found that when parents actively engage with their children’s education, it leads to higher grades, better attitudes toward school, and a greater likelihood of completing secondary education. Furthermore, parental involvement can foster better self-esteem in students, which in turn enhances their academic achievements. In the context of Ogun State, research by Akinboye et al. (2016) emphasizes the critical role of parental support in shaping the academic achievements of students in both public and private schools. Despite numerous government and non-governmental efforts to improve the education sector, students in this region continue to struggle with poor academic performance in critical subjects such as Mathematics, English, and Science. A major factor that has been linked to student success is the level of parental involvement in the academic life of students. However, there remains a noticeable gap in the extent to which parents in Ado-Odo Ota LGA actively engage in their children’s education, which may contribute to the persistent academic challenges faced by students in the area.

Parental involvement is widely recognized as an essential determinant of academic success, influencing students’ attitudes toward learning, academic motivation, and overall performance. In many cases, active parental involvement includes regular communication with teachers, participation in school activities, and creating a supportive learning environment at home. Despite this understanding, there are indications that a significant portion of parents in Ado-Odo Ota LGA do not fully engage in their children’s educational processes. This lack of involvement may stem from various factors such as time constraints, inadequate knowledge of how to support their children’s academic work, or a perception that the responsibility for academic success lies solely with the school. As a result, students in this region may not receive the necessary support, leading to suboptimal academic outcomes.

The factors contributing to this problem include socio-economic challenges, cultural perceptions of education, and insufficient support from schools in fostering parent-school collaboration. This study aims to explore these issues in detail, assess the level of parental involvement in students’ education, and propose strategies for improving parental engagement to enhance academic performance in the region.

1.3. Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine Level of parental involvement in students’ academic performance in senior secondary schools in Ado-Odo Ota LGA of Ogun State. The specific objectives are:

1. To assess the extent of parental involvement in students’ academic activities in senior secondary schools.
2. To examine the impact of parental support on students’ academic performance in senior secondary schools.
3. To identify the factors influencing parental involvement in students’ academic performance.
4. To explore the relationship between parental involvement and students’ academic achievement in senior secondary schools.

1.6. Significance of the Study

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

1. Level: In this context,level can refer to a specific degree or stage of something, such as the extent or intensity of parental involvement, the degree of academic performance, or the grade level in secondary schools.
2. Parental Involvement: Parental involvement refers to the active participation of parents in their child’s education. This can include attending school meetings, supporting learning at home, communicating with teachers, and participating in school activities. The level of parental involvement can significantly impact a student’s academic success.
3. Students: Students are individuals who are enrolled in an educational institution, such as a secondary school, and are actively engaged in learning. The term specifically refers to children or adolescents who are pursuing education at the secondary school level (typically ages 12–18, depending on the country).
4. Academic Performance: Academic performance refers to how well a student is doing in their studies, typically measured by grades, test scores, assignments, and overall achievements in school. High academic performance indicates a student’s proficiency and success in meeting educational standards.
5. Secondary Schools: Secondary schools are educational institutions that provide education to students after primary or elementary school, usually including middle and high schools.
