CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education has transformed teaching and learning processes across the globe, offering innovative ways to engage students and improve learning outcomes. ICT encompasses a wide range of technologies, including computers, the internet, multimedia tools, and educational software, which facilitate both teaching and learning in diverse and interactive ways (Ololube, 2013). In recent years, the adoption of ICT in schools has gained significant momentum, particularly in the teaching of various subjects such as Mathematics, Science, and Economics. Economics, being a critical subject in understanding the functioning of economies, requires not only theoretical knowledge but also the ability to apply concepts through real-world data and simulations. ICT tools, when appropriately integrated into the curriculum, can enhance students’ grasp of economic theories and improve their analytical and problem-solving skills (Ally, 2004).

In the context of senior secondary schools in Nigeria, the integration of ICT into teaching and learning is still in its early stages, with many schools facing challenges related to infrastructure, teacher competence, and access to digital resources (Ibrahim & Adu, 2013). While some urban schools have made significant strides in incorporating ICT tools in their teaching methods, schools in rural and semi-urban areas like Lafia Local Government Area (LGA) in Nasarawa State continue to grapple with inadequate technological infrastructure, limited access to the internet, and insufficient teacher training (Ogunleye & Ajao, 2014). However, despite these challenges, the potential for ICT to revolutionize the teaching of Economics in secondary schools remains substantial, particularly in enhancing the learning experience and preparing students for the demands of the 21st-century global economy.

Lafia Local Government Area, being one of the major LGAs in Nasarawa State, represents a critical area for examining the impact of ICT in education. Senior secondary schools in this region serve as a vital point for preparing students for further academic pursuits or entering the workforce. Given the growing emphasis on technology and digital literacy in educational policies, understanding how ICT resources are utilized in Economics classrooms in Lafia is essential for assessing the effectiveness of current practices and identifying areas for improvement (Nigerian National Policy on Education, 2013). The ability of students to access and engage with Economics content through digital platforms could potentially bridge gaps in understanding complex economic concepts, making the subject more accessible and appealing.

The relevance of ICT in the teaching and learning of Economics extends beyond simple access to information. It encompasses a range of applications, such as interactive learning platforms, online databases for economic data, and simulation tools that allow students to visualize economic models and conduct experiments (Jenkins, 2012). In addition, ICT offers opportunities for collaborative learning through online discussion forums, video conferences, and group projects, enabling students to engage with their peers and instructors outside the traditional classroom setting. For Economics students, these digital tools not only improve engagement but also enable them to stay updated on current economic trends, a critical skill in understanding the dynamics of both local and global economies.

Despite these promising prospects, there is a gap in research regarding the specific challenges and opportunities associated with the use of ICT in teaching Economics at the senior secondary level in Lafia LGA. While there have been studies conducted in other regions of Nigeria (e.g., Ogunleye & Ajao, 2014; Ololube, 2013), there is a paucity of empirical research focusing on the specific context of Lafia LGA. Therefore, it is crucial to explore how ICT resources are currently being used in Economics classrooms in the region, the extent to which teachers are trained to integrate these technologies into their teaching methods, and the perceptions of both teachers and students regarding the effectiveness of ICT in enhancing Economics education.

This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the use of ICT resources in the teaching and learning of Economics in senior secondary schools in Lafia LGA. It aims to assess the level of ICT adoption in these schools, the types of ICT tools available, and the challenges faced by educators and students in leveraging technology for educational purposes. By exploring these dimensions, the study will provide valuable insights into the potential of ICT to improve the teaching and learning of Economics and offer recommendations for policy makers, educators, and school administrators on how to optimize the use of ICT in secondary school education.
