INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

The parent-child relationship plays a crucial role in shaping the academic success of students across various disciplines, including Biology. Research has consistently shown that positive relationships between parents and children are associated with higher academic performance. According to Jeynes (2012), children who experience supportive, nurturing relationships with their parents tend to perform better academically because of the encouragement, emotional support, and reinforcement they receive. These relationships create a conducive environment for students to thrive in subjects like Biology, which often require high cognitive engagement and long-term commitment. The connection between parental involvement and academic achievement can be traced through various mechanisms, such as increased motivation, self-discipline, and confidence in academic settings.

Parental support in the form of emotional encouragement, help with homework, and consistent involvement in school activities has been shown to enhance the academic achievement of students. In a study by Fan and Chen (2001), they found that students whose parents were actively involved in their education performed better academically, with Biology being no exception. Biology, with its complex concepts and extensive content, often requires additional support outside the classroom. Parents who take an active interest in their children’s academic life, especially in subjects like Biology, provide the necessary resources and encouragement that can significantly affect performance. Research by Huang (2011) also supports this, showing that parental engagement helps students develop strong study habits, which are essential for mastering scientific subjects.

While numerous studies have established a link between parental involvement and academic success, there is a gap in understanding how specifically the dynamics of the parent-child relationship affect students’ performance in subjects that require high cognitive engagement, such as Biology. Biology, with its complex concepts, theories, and extensive memorization requirements, presents unique challenges to students. However, research has not sufficiently explored how positive or negative interactions within the family unit directly impact students’ ability to succeed in such demanding academic subjects.

Research suggests that parental involvement in children’s education is a strong predictor of academic success. However, the depth and quality of this involvement—such as emotional support, encouragement, and direct engagement with the subject matter—has not been consistently studied, particularly in the context of STEM subjects like Biology. Many studies have focused on general academic achievement or standardized test scores, but the impact of the parent-child relationship on a specific subject like Biology has been under-researched. Given that Biology demands not only understanding theoretical concepts but also engaging in laboratory work, critical thinking, and problem-solving, it is crucial to examine the nuanced ways in which parents influence students’ performance in this subject.

Given the importance of parental influence in shaping students’ academic journeys, understanding how to foster positive parent-child relationships could be key to helping students overcome the challenges posed by subjects that require critical thinking and continuous engagement, such as Biology. Addressing this gap is essential for the development of more effective strategies to support students’ academic success.

1.3. Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine the influence of parents-childen relationship towards academic achievement of Biology students in Aguata Education Zone of Anambra State. The specific objectives are:

  1. To examine the correlation between parental involvement in a child’s education and their academic performance in Biology.
  2. To investigate the impact of parental support and encouragement on Biology students’ motivation and study habits.
  3. To analyze the role of communication between parents and children in fostering academic success in Biology.
  4. To explore the effects of parental expectations and aspirations on Biology students’ academic achievements.

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: Parental involvement in a child’s education will not affect their academic performance in Biology

H1: Parental involvement in a child’s education will affect their academic performance in Biology

The study examines the influence of parents-childen relationship towards academic achievement of Biology students in Aguata Education Zone of Anambra State.

 

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Influence: Influence refers to the capacity to have an effect on the behavior, development, or academic performance of someone or something. In this context, influence specifically refers to how parents’ actions, behaviors, and emotional support can shape the academic success and overall well-being of their children.

Parents: Parents are individuals, typically biological or adoptive, who raise and care for children. They are responsible for providing emotional, financial, and educational support, and their involvement in a child’s life can significantly affect the child’s social, emotional, and academic development.

Children: Children are young individuals who are still in the process of development and learning. In the context of this study, children refer to students who are in their secondary school years, particularly those studying Biology. They are dependent on their parents for guidance, education, and support.

Relationship: A relationship in this context refers to the emotional, psychological, and communicative bond between parents and their children. It encompasses how parents and children interact with one another, share experiences, and provide mutual support. The quality of this relationship can deeply impact a child’s academic motivation and performance.

Academic Achievement: Academic achievement refers to the level of success or proficiency a student attains in their educational endeavors, usually measured through grades, test scores, and overall understanding of subject matter. In this study, academic achievement is specifically related to students’ performance in Biology, which involves both theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Biology: Biology is a branch of science that deals with the study of living organisms and their vital processes. It encompasses topics such as genetics, ecology, human anatomy, and microbiology. As a subject, Biology requires students to understand complex concepts, engage in critical thinking, and develop practical laboratory skills.

Students: Students are individuals who are actively engaged in learning, typically in an academic setting. In this context, students refer to individuals attending secondary schools in the Aguata Education Zone of Anambra State, who are pursuing studies in subjects like Biology. Students are the focus of this study, particularly in how their academic success in Biology is influenced by their relationships with their parents.
