INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

Environmental factors play a critical role in shaping students’ academic performance, particularly in subjects like geography that require both cognitive engagement and spatial understanding. According to Aremu and Sokan (2017), the learning environment significantly influences students’ academic outcomes, as it encompasses not only the physical infrastructure but also psychosocial and contextual elements. Classrooms that are well-ventilated, adequately lit, and free from noise are more conducive to learning and help students focus better on complex subjects like geography, which often involves interpreting maps, charts, and diagrams.

One of the primary environmental determinants of geography performance is the availability and accessibility of learning materials and resources. According to Yusuf and Adigun (2016), students in resource-rich environments, such as schools equipped with globes, atlases, and geographic information system (GIS) tools, tend to perform better than their counterparts in poorly resourced schools. Geography, being both theoretical and practical, requires a wide range of instructional materials to enable effective teaching and learning. Without these tools, students may struggle to grasp core concepts, leading to underperformance.

Another influential factor is class size and student-teacher ratio. Studies by Adeyemi (2019) highlight that overcrowded classrooms hinder individual attention and active engagement, which are vital in geography lessons that often include map reading and fieldwork discussions. Smaller class sizes foster more interactive lessons and better teacher-student relationships, allowing teachers to address individual learning needs more effectively. As a result, students in such environments are likely to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of geography.

  • Statement of the Problem

Geography, as a subject in the senior secondary school curriculum, plays a vital role in helping students understand the physical and human environment, develop spatial thinking skills, and become globally aware citizens. However, despite its importance, students’ performance in geography has consistently remained below expectations in many secondary schools. This underachievement raises concerns among educators, parents, and policymakers, prompting the need to examine the underlying causes. One key area that demands attention is the learning environment, which is believed to significantly influence how well students engage with and perform in the subject.

A growing body of evidence suggests that environmental factors such as classroom conditions, availability of learning resources, and school infrastructure can either enhance or hinder students’ academic achievement. In many public secondary schools, classrooms are overcrowded, poorly ventilated, and lack essential teaching aids such as maps, globes, and atlases—tools that are particularly crucial in teaching geography. These suboptimal conditions make it difficult for students to fully grasp key concepts, limiting their ability to apply geographic knowledge in real-life situations or examinations.

In addition to physical infrastructure, the broader school environment—including noise levels, lighting, and classroom arrangement—can affect students’ concentration and learning outcomes. Poor learning conditions often result in diminished student motivation and interest, especially in subjects like geography that require active participation and visual learning. The neglect of these environmental aspects by school management and educational authorities contributes to the ongoing decline in students’ performance, yet these factors remain underexplored in local educational research.

Socioeconomic disparities among schools also play a significant role in this problem. Students in urban and well-funded schools often enjoy access to updated learning materials, digital tools like GIS software, and opportunities for educational field trips, all of which enhance geography learning. In contrast, students in rural or poorly funded schools are frequently deprived of these learning experiences, placing them at a disadvantage. These environmental inequalities contribute to the academic gap observed in students’ performance across different regions and school types.

Another layer of the issue lies in the preparedness and adaptability of teachers. Even when resources are available, some teachers may lack the training or motivation to effectively utilize them in geography lessons. Inadequate teacher support and poor working conditions—both of which are environmental in nature—can further diminish the quality of instruction, directly impacting student outcomes. Therefore, the problem this study seeks to address is the extent to which environmental factors—ranging from physical infrastructure and resource availability to school location and socioeconomic conditions—impact students’ academic performance in geography at the senior secondary school level. Identifying and analyzing these factors is crucial for developing targeted interventions that can improve both the teaching and learning of geography, thereby enhancing student outcomes and educational equity.

1.3. Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine the environmental factors and students performance in learning Geography in senior secondary schools in Etim Ekpo LGA.  The specific objectives are:

  1. To investigate the impact of security of the environment on students’ academic performance in Geography.
  2. To examine the relationship between the location of the school and students’ achievement in Geography.
  3. To assess how the serenity of the environment influences students’ engagement and interest in learning Geography.
  4. To identify any correlations between environmental factors and students’ motivation to excel in Geography.

The research questions are buttressed below:

  2. What is the relationship between the location of the school and students’ achievement in Geography?
  3. How does the serenity of the environment influence students’ engagement and interest in learning Geography?
  4. Are there any correlations between environmental factors and students’ motivation to excel in Geography?

 

1.5.  Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: The location of the school will not affect students’ achievement in Geography.

H1: The location of the school will affect students’ achievement in Geography.

 

1.6. Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it seeks to uncover the relationship between environmental factors and students’ performance in learning Geography within the specific context of Etim Ekpo Local Government Area (LGA). Geography, being both theoretical and practical, requires a conducive learning environment to facilitate student engagement and understanding. By focusing on Etim Ekpo, the study highlights local realities that are often overlooked in broader national studies, providing insights that are directly relevant to the educational development of the area.

The findings of this research will be beneficial to school administrators and principals in Etim Ekpo LGA, as it will provide evidence-based data on how classroom conditions, instructional materials, and the general school environment influence students’ learning outcomes in Geography. This information can guide the improvement of school facilities and the allocation of resources in ways that promote better teaching and learning experiences. Enhancing these environmental factors can lead to improved academic performance, not only in Geography but in other subjects as well.

For policymakers and education planners at the state and local government levels, the study will offer a clear understanding of the infrastructural and environmental challenges facing secondary schools in Etim Ekpo. 1.7. Scope of the Study

The study examines the environmental factors and students’ performance in learning Geography in senior secondary schools in Etim Ekpo LGA, Akwa Ibom State. The study is limited to selected senior secondary schools in Etim Ekpo LGA, Akwa Ibom State.

 

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Environmental Factors: Environmental factors refer to all the external physical, social, and psychological conditions that influence teaching and learning. In the context of education, these include classroom facilities, lighting, ventilation, noise levels, availability of teaching materials, school infrastructure, and even the socio-economic environment surrounding the school.
  2. Students: Students are individuals enrolled in a formal educational institution who are actively engaged in the process of learning. In this context, students refer specifically to those attending senior secondary schools who are studying subjects like Geography as part of their academic curriculum.
  3. Performance: Performance refers to the measurable outcomes of students’ academic efforts, typically assessed through tests, examinations, assignments, and practical assessments. It indicates the extent to which students have achieved the learning objectives or goals set for a particular subject, such as Geography.
  4. Learning: Learning is the process of acquiring knowledge, skills, attitudes, or values through study, experience, or instruction. In the classroom setting, learning involves both the understanding and application of concepts taught by teachers. It is influenced by a range of factors including environment, motivation, and teaching methods.
  5. Geography: Geography is a branch of social science that deals with the study of the Earth’s physical features, human-environment interactions, and spatial relationships. It helps students understand natural phenomena (like weather, climate, and landforms) and human activities (like urbanization and migration) and how they influence each other across different regions of the world.
  6. Senior Secondary Schools: Senior secondary schools are the upper level of secondary education in Nigeria, typically comprising SS1 to SS3(Senior Secondary School years 1 to 3). Students at this level are usually aged between 15 and 18 and are prepared for external examinations such as the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or NECO.
