CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
- Introduction
Automated course allocation and timetable management system for lecturers is being developed to provide ease handling on courses and timetable given to lecturers. All lecturers are having their preferable courses and timetable where their expertise field play the most important role on that issue (Diebold, 2017).
Over the years allocation of course and their credit units and departmental timetable have been growing from one stage to another and similarly, the procedures and routine embarked on every semester coupled with the departmental growth compounded the problem of manual allocation of course their units and thereby delays the registration procedures because some students paying extra fee as payment that is demanded in addition to the usual charge for registering their course late, as late payment but computerization or automation of course their credit units allocation and departmental time provide the most effective reliable and quickest services required by the students (Kominers, 2010). Basically, before the invention of computers, computation were done manually and in the case of the departmental course, their credit units and departmental timetable, it has caused accelerated progress especially the automation of department course their credit units and departmental time table. Computer technology has been accepted as an indispensable innovation in most fields of human endeavour in which departmental courses is not an exception (Budish, 2007).
Hence, the efficiency of an organization or establishment would be achieved if they embark on computer-based system. However, using the computer based system in place of the manual system, a charge that is going on in computer science, AkwaIbomState Polytechnic course registration procedure. It will make the practical insinuation of high technology. This will enframe the time needed for processing of departmental course and attend to other subsequent information needed by the management system (Hoshino, 2014). The important of this researcher is so prominent with the current of processing the departmental course and suggest a complete efficient and reliable approach that will be of immense benefit to most higher institutions in general especially to AkwaIbom State Polytechnic.
Actually, this would go a long way to improve their service by exposing and creating awareness of computer applications.
1.1 Background of the Study
Institutions across the country are having a constraint on course allocations for the lecturers by using manual allocation process, which is relatively slow and increases delay in institution process. It effects the lecturer’s expertise field which they have done the majoring studies on it. Every lecturer is having their preferable course to be lectured for the student under that course registered by them on the current semester. Some lecturers also doing their research on the time of their work, due to manual allocation of courses it effects their research timing. Some lecturers are also on higher position also getting more courses to be lectured by them. Moreover, they should be getting less courses to be lectured. Due to this issue happening in Universities, the researcher have developed a proposed system to help aid course allocation within lecturers. This project consist are system which handles the allocation of the courses for the lecturers according to their expertise and their position. It also minimizes the courses given to the higher position lecturers. This system also user friendly and ease the work of the admin office to provide the lecturers their preferable courses.
Hence, the efficiency of an organization or establishment would be achieved if they embark on computer-based system. However, using the computer based in place of the manual system, a charge that is going on in AkwaIbom State polytechnic course registration procedure. It will make the practical insinuation of high technology. This will enframe the time needed for processing the departmental course and attend to other subsequent information needed by the management system (Sönmez, 2010). The importance of this research is so prominent with the current of processing the departmental courses and suggest a complete efficient and reliable approach that will be immense benefit of most higher institutions in general especially to the department computer science, AkwaIbom state polytechnic.
- Statement of the Problem
The current course management allocation system for academy staff is being done manually which causes inaccuracy on the number of courses given for the lecturer. Other than that, lecturers could not get the preferred course according to their expertise.
Below are some of the problems in this system.
- It delays student to have effect lectures at the beginning of a semester.
- It wastes much paper and make filling of form cumbersome.
- It delays lecturer adjustment to the new allocation courses.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of the study is to develop an automated course allocation and time table management record system.
They objectives are:
- To develop a system that will aids in the allocation of course and timetable to lecturers
- To develop a system that will be more interactive to students and lecturers.
- To create a system that will Provide an automatic system that will reduce the work load of staff especially the HODs
1.4 Significance of the Study
The significance of the study includes:
- The high cost incurred by the management in buying of papers, pens, pencils, makers, measuring ruler etc , the clerical duties involves in course allocation and department time table will be reduced drastically because the hard disk, floppies, tape would be used instead of the above mentioned.
- The time involved in allocating and re-allocating which normally results to delay will be reduced.
- Students would then utilize their time efficiently during the registration of course.
- Automated System would also serve as a reference file for the students and staff since the course, credit unit’s time table and lectures in charge of all therefore then.
- This study will help the proponents to enhance the ability on how to create an understandable computerized system in an easy way.
- Scope of the Study
The scope of the study is to develop a system that will an automate course allocation and timetable to lecturer in Computer Science department, AkwaIbom State Polytechnic as case study.
1.6 Organization of the Study
This research project is organized in the following order:
Chapter one focuses on the introduction, background of the study, statement of the problems, aim and objective of the study, scope of the study, organization of the research and the definition of terms. Chapter two focuses on the review of related literature. Chapter threefocuses on the research analysis and methodology of the system laying emphasis on the algorithm, flowcharts, input/output analysis. Chapter fourfocuses on system design and implementation which further discusses analysis of modules, choice of programming language, etc. Chapter fivefocuses on the summary, conclusion, recommendation as well as constraints of the study.
- Definition of Terms
Allocation: The action or process of allocation or sharing out something.
