CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Social networks have taken the world by storm with Facebook really setting major trends for others to follow. The vision of social networks like Facebook is to connect with friends, relatives and other acquaintances across the globe without having to lift a finger or even your self to get that done.

It has also impacted the way we relate to each other in real life and also the way we perform certain job tasks.

A lot of behavioral analysis have been carried out with each technology that have been adopted by humanity and social networks are not an exception.

Facebook is the major case study to understand our behaviour towards these Social networks and how they in fact impact our behaviour.

It brings together the field of Computer Science and Psychology.

Behavior must be observable and measurable in order for it to be changed. If we can observe and see behavior, we can measure it with data, and then we can change it (Gilmore, 2019). When we say the term “behavior” it doesn’t just have to mean “bad” behavior, but behavior can also be appropriate or desirable behavior. Behavior Analysts want to increase some behaviors and decrease others. It is also important to describe “behavior change” in terms of how the child’s life is changed, rather than just their behavior.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM

Social networks have been a blessing in a lot of ramifications and can also be a curse in it affecting our behaviour and Facebook more specifically.

We want to observe and draw inferences from the social network and provide a frame work for further studies in this relative new area of computer technology.

An object oriented analysis of the system would be carried out in relation to consumer behaviour.

  • RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The study endeavors to answer the following research questions:

  1. What is the extent to which Facebook use influence inter-personal relationship?
  2. Does the behaviour online translate to behaviour in real life?

1.4 HYPOTHESES/ASSUMPTIONS

In order to answer the research questions, the following testable null hypotheses were formulated:

1.4 AIMS OF THE STUDY

The aims of the study include:

  • A clear analysis of the social network, Facebook.
  • Object oriented analysis of behaviour in relation to the social network.

1.6 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objectives of the study include:

  • An object oriented analysis of the social network
  • A review of related literature in the study type
  • A carefully crafted out descriptive analysis based on the behaviour of users as regards the social network technology

1.7 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study is significant such that it enables us to study the growth and popularity of these various social network platforms and the way they have made themselves an integral part of our daily lives.

It would help us to capture data from the positive and normative usage of the social network platforms and its general effects.

1.8 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study would center on the object oriented analysis of the Facebook platform and the users who are usually between the ages of 16 and 40 years.

1.9 ORGANIZATION OF THE PROJECT

The project is organized such that; Chapter One gives a brief introduction in form of the Background of the Study of social networking system. In Chapter Two, we have a broad look at the related work in the case of behavioral analysis of social networking and using the Facebook platform as the case for extensive study. Chapter Three examines the research and analysis methodology. Chapter Four presents the results of the research work using necessary models. It also presents the result of testing carried out. Chapter Five rounds off the project work with the summary, conclusions and recommendations for future works.

1.10 OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS

  • SOCIAL NETWORKS: A social network refers to a defined set of social actors – which may include individuals, organizations, or other entities – and the social relationships that connect them to each other in a larger structure
  • BEHAVIOURAL ANALYSIS: Behavioral analysis is a natural science that seeks to understand the behavior of individuals. That is, behavior analysts study how biological, pharmacological, and experiential factors influence the behavior of humans and nonhuman animals.
  • OBJECT ORIENTED ANALYSIS: Object-oriented analysis is an analysis approach that is intended to facilitate the development of systems that must change rapidly in response to Consumer behavioral trends
