CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The world of computer is basically a friendly one, and no special credential is needed to become part of it while it’s true that modern computer system involves complex technologies and theories, their use is becoming easier all the time. Computer have a general-purpose nature which makes them endlessly versatile. They can be applied to a wide range of activities and increasingly their tasks have an intelligent or creative flavor. That is, the invention of the computer has recorded tremendous growth on automation process and information technology. Also the era of global computing has really made a high impact on our generation and the society as a whole.

There has been an evolution from the manual way of storing, transferring, recording and getting information into a more computerized way through the use of interest which made it affordable for anybody to get the required information at anywhere, anytime or anyplace in consequence of the distance and we would gladly say that our world has gradually become a global village.

With this global awareness, various establishments or instructions carry out various forms of activities on the internet which has become the center of different forms of business negotiation or activities ranging from the transportation sector to individual business, education, co-operate institutions, etc. all Which carry out one form of business transaction or activities on the internet.

Most organizations now have a website and also an e-mail facility (internet) which enables individual to get the required information from a particular website about a company to satisfy his need and also get the required information when necessary.

Furthermore, various software packages are being developed to eliminate the stress and problematic nature associated with the manual means of payments, recording of the daily payment, clashes of customers seat number and even avoiding the long queue. Therefore a software program is going to be developed with a database that is required to contain the cinema, customers’ name, seat number, movie title, time of movie, sessions, room etc. which should be presented by the customer on the day of the movie.

Finally, the software package would not totally replace the activities of the cashier who use the database to confirm authenticity of the customer payment details and would also help to increase the effective and efficient service provide by the cashier at the cinema.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Nigeria’s first contact with cinema was in 1903. It was at the instance of Herbert Macaulay, a foremost nationalist who invited the Balboa and Company who was then doing an exhibition tour of silent films on the West African Coast to Nigeria. The films were shown at the Glover Memorial Hall, Lagos in August, 1903.

The success of the Balboa venture paved the way for an influx of European film exhibitors to Nigeria (Ekwuasi, 1984: 9). Shortly the colonial government took interest and brought in a lot of films (Itam, 2000:32). According to Ekwuasi (1984) film production, distribution and exhibition was restricted to Lagos where they compete with concerts and drama shows and the contents of such movies were highly censored. Gradually, however, it fanned out to towns in the immediate hinterland of Lagos and beyond it. As the country became more industrialised and urbanised, there was a need to establish distribution/ exhibition centres in these new areas and in no time, the branches of the distribution and exhibition companies had spread all over the country( Nweke,1995).

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Many problems are being encountered in the manual system of payment. The existing system has two ways of booking tickets for a movie:

Booking tickets at the ticket counter of respective cinema hall and
Through phone called as “Telebooking”.

Booking at the counter is a hectic process where one should stand in long queues for hours. Telebooking was introduced keeping in view the user’s comfort while booking tickets

OBJECTIVE OF STUDY

The main purpose of online ticket booking system is to provide another way for the customer to buy cinema ticket. The Ticket Reservation System is an Internet based application that can be accessed throughout the Net and can be accessed by anyone who has a net connection. It is an automatic system, where we will automate the reservation of tickets and enquiries about availability of tickets. After inserting the data to the database, staff need not to worry about the orders received through the system and hence reduces the manual labor. One of the best features of the system is to refund the amount on cancellation of tickets by the customer.

The goals of the system are:

To provide a anytime, any place service for the customer
To provide refunds
To minimize the number of staff at the ticket box
To promote the film on the internet
To increase the profit
To obtain statistic information from the booking record

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

When the online payment is implemented, it will ease the stress accompanied on making a manual payment. An internet user can buy tickets at any time of day or night. He will be guided with all the necessary steps to book tickets and collect tickets at the ticket counter in the website. Customers can cancel seats at a suitable time (2 days before the show to 1hour before the show). If the customer wishes to cancel his tickets he will be given a confirmation details regarding his cancellations.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of this study is to provide an easy option for the customer who is willing to book tickets online for a movie. It saves his time and labor. On the other hand half of the tickets of the cinema hall are being provided for booking online. Such that labor of staff is reduced. This system can be accessed anywhere by anyone who has an internet connection at any time of day or night, thus providing customer’s comfort. And also plays a major role in promoting the multiplex and the movies.

Keeping in view the customer’s benefit, the system also has an additional functionality where the refund is available on cancellation of tickets. This is one of the functionalities where the previous systems were lacking with.

LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Due to financial constraint on the economy, which would have helped to make the project research more effective and efficient. There was time limitation on the part of the researcher due to certain academic factors.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Browser: This is a program that allows user to access documents on the World Wide Web (WWW). Browsers can be either text or graphic.
E-Ticket: E-ticket (electronic ticket) is used to represent the purchase of a seat for a customer through a website. This form of ticketing is rapidly replacing the old paper tickets.

Graphics: This is the picture that computers display. Not text but just about everything else.

Internet: Internet (international network of computer) is a system of computer network connected to one another from different parts of the world, forming a very large network. Internet is an example of global area network.
Online: This is when something is connected to a computer or controlled by a computer or to the Internet.
Protocol: This is the agreed method computer used to communicate with each other. It can be also define as a convention or agreement between the operating system of two machines on what messages may contain.

Cinema: a movie cinema/theatre or movie house.
Server: This is a program or a computer that responds to request from other program and delivers the requested document. It can also be defined as a central computer that supervises the control of the network activities of other computer on a network.

Telebooking: booking done via a phone.
WebPages: This is an individual page on the Internet. Every time you click on a link you are taken to a new web page.
Website: It is a collection of related files this term describes a particular company’s users, or organization’s web pages served up by a web server.
