CHAPTER ONE
- INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
In some of the developed countries, “Ability Test” is used in admitting students into tertiary institutions and professional schools. For instance, the “Scholastic Aptitude Test”, which measures both aptitude and achievement( the aptitude test measures accomplished skills and indicates what a person can do at present, while achievement test, predicts what a person can accomplish with training). But, the essential requirements for any test include reliability, validity and uniform testing procedure.
The test which measures general intellectual ability is often called “intelligence test’. Intelligence Test is usually designed and implemented for a group of people to access the nature and course of mental development; intellectual and non-intellectual personality differences associated with age, sex, and differences among people at different levels such as the mentally gifted and mentally retorted.
The design of the system that incorporates this intelligence test is what I called “Computer–Based Intelligence Test system (CBITs)”. This system is geared towards impacting intelligence on a computer, whereby the Post-UTME Screening test will be administered and conducted using the computer system, and at the end, the result will be automatically marked and displayed on the screen for the student to know his/her fate. This system is highly recommended for the tertiary institutions in Nigeria, especially my case study: “the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri”.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
A critical look at the mode of conduction of the Post-UTME screening test in the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, shows that the examinations come as an objective questions whereby the answers are expected to be shaded on the computer sheets, which at the end of the examinations is marked manually by the examiners, leaving much to be desired especially in the Nigerian context of it.
Moreso, during the admission after the examination, many factors such as Godfatherism, favoritism, tribalism, bribery, and corruption may lead to bias. as a result, instead of admitting qualified and eligible candidates, unqualified candidates who did not do well in the screening test are admitted. The delay in the release of the screening test results and admission lists causes anxiety on the students that participated in the examination.
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF STUDY
The prime objective of this study is to design a system which will be used to enhance the administration and conduction of the screening test entrance examination in schools and other organizations that are involved in the entrance examination. This enables them to access the candidates to be admitted in school and work. This project aims at an improved situation where the Post-UTME screening examination will be conducted and taken on the computer system. The use of the computer to achieve this is my area of concentration.
1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this is to outline the practical uses of the computer system in the area of intelligence test, Computer-Aided Learning, Computer-Assisted Testing, and Programming.
1.5 LIMITATION OF STUDY
Due to time constraints, I was unable to extend my research to cover all the subjects. That was why I limited it to just three (3) subjects: English Language, Mathematics, and General Paper (GP).
1.6 DELIMITATION OF STUDY
This project is designed solely for accessing the intelligence capabilities of students who are seeking for admission into higher institutions and those students who are due to return for the Higher National Diploma Programme having satisfied the one-year industrial training requirements. The system is open to be used by all organizations that conducts screening test and examination.
1.7 TEST DESCRIPTION
The Computer-Based Intelligence Test is an interactive one. Here, the user is expected to answer the questions by using the mouse to point and select (click) the correct alphabet on the monitor. As the answer is clicked, the system displays a mark on the alphabets. The design of the test questions is mainly in an objective form, that is, multiple-choice method. Here, the alternative of what could be the answer to the question asked are provided. The user then clicks on the alphabet he/she feels is the correct answer.
The reason why objective kind of questions is used in this design is due to its very many advantages, some of which are:
- the time for administration is short, considering the psychological effects on students while writing examinations that will last for three hours against the thirty or forty-five minutes. They are more relaxed with the thirty minutes event examination than that of three hours.
- the rule of validity in any intelligence test is that it should be as much as possible standardized in one form or the other. An objective test is easier to be administered to a sample of students under the same conditions and follows the same rules in the assessment.
- Marking is objective and reliable, similar answers by different conditions are given the same score, provided the correct alphabet is clicked on. The computer will only add up the score if the answer is correct.
- Scoring is not subject in any way to psychological mood, prejudice, whims, and caprice of the examiner nor does it depend on the scoring In this respect, the computer is more object because it is not subject to any human feelings.
1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS
COMPUTER: this is defined as a programmable machine designed to sequentially and automatically carry out a sequence of arithmetic or logical operations, and at the end of the processing gives out the desired result as information.
MONITOR: this can also be called Visual Display Unit (VDU) Or the Screen. The monitor is the television-like component of a computer system that displays information. It is an output device.
INTELLIGENCE TEST: this is a type of test which measures general intelligence ability of an individual. It is widely used in business, military and educational settings in predicting behavior and accessing the nature and cause of mental development of an individual.
KEYBOARD: this is an input device that has different types of keys that can be used to enter date into the computer system. Keyboard can be Standard or Enhanced.
MOUSE: this is a hand-held input device or component of the computer which can be used for pointing, clicking, double-clicking, and dragging of objects on the computer monitor. The mouse is used to give the command to the computer system by pointing and clicking on the command button.
A SYSTEM: this simply refers to as a set of components that interact together so as to accomplish a particular task or purpose. An example of a system is the Computer System.
SYSTEM ANALYSIS: this refers to studying what a system does and why it should be done. It is also seen as a process of gathering and interpreting facts, diagnosing problems and using the facts to improve the system.
