DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ONLINE STUDENT PROJECT SUPERVISION SYSTEM
CHAPTER ONE
1.1GENERAL INTRODUCTION
The supervisory process of research student has attracted a lot of attention and consideration from higher education institutions around the world. Many books articles and best practice Guidelines have been produced for students and supervisors to explain this process, to increase their awareness about the main challenges and the key issues to avoid and to help them establish an effective relationship. In contrast, undergraduate and postgraduate find year and dissertation projects (i.e those who require the production of a dissertation report at the end) have not attracted a similar focus for different reasons. The requirements and the standards for a high quality supervisory process are usually left for the Intuition of the module leader, the supervisor or the academic coordinator and the quality assurance manager of those types of projects. Although some supervisors and module leaders have developed some specific guidelines and pro-forma documents to ease and control the supervision process for both postgraduate and undergraduate students, they have not been supported by a central electronic technology based system that federates the communication between all those who are involved either directly or indirectly in the supervision process. Having such as collaborative system can help to record, monitor and revisit the supervision process and enhance the student learning experience. From a student perspective, having in place a unique electronic supervision system alongside with the traditional face-to-face and paper based supervision methods, can ensure the homogeneity of the supervision practices within an academic institution, guarantee assessment fairness, ease the communication loop and handle smooth data and report transfer between all involved parties. To capture and reflect the best supervision practices and enhance student learning experience, there is today an urgent need for higher education institutions to design and implement a paperless collaborative supervision system that could be used simultaneously by all the supervision actors, to achieve these goals, we are going start in the section 2 by critically reviewing existing supervision practices and standards orcontracting classis and e-supervision methods. We will analyze the strengths and the weaknesses of each method with respect to practicality, effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of student supervision. Then we will briefly describe current electronic educational technology and computer-assisted based tools that are used in the UK. To identify the requirements that an online supervision system should fulfill, we have designed different specific questionnaires for students and academic staff. These questionnaires aim to refine the requirements for our e-supervision tools. Based on the questionnaire result, we have Implemented an initial prototype of this system. We are going to explain its features in section 3 and 4. Finally, we conclude by discussing the strengths and the weakness of this project and briefly describing future work.
1.2HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE CASE STUDY
The present day Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata Mafara Zamfara State has a long standing history its origin data back in the emergency of staff training center Sokoto in 1956, which was eventually renamed staff development institute, Birnin Kebbiand home economic center, Gusau to constitute and called Administration sokoto which formed part of the polytechnic of sokoto state Birnin kebbi in 1980.
The laudable proposal eventually because of a reality in 1992 when his Excellency the governor of sokoto state. Mallam Yahaya Abdulkarim signed the bill establishing the polytechnic in February 1995, the government of sokoto state the renewed institution as ABDU GUSAU polytechnic after the late engr. Who died in November 1994.
In October, 1994 the federal government created Zamfara state out of the sokoto a situation which necessities the hurried relation of the institution to it partially completed site as it was possible legally for Zamfara State to continue to sustain an institution belonging to it but located within sokoto polytechnic now operated a school system as opposed to farmer college system. The school is headed by dens who are answerable to assist the rector in running the affairs of the institution.
Each school has a number of department under of which math’s and statistic and computer science department respectively fell under one unit i.e. preliminary studies and mathematical computer science department headed by Mal: Aliyu Umar and Bashar Suleiman respectively.
The mathematical computer department was further divided into two named, math’s and statistic department and computer science department headed by Mal: Maihaja and Mallam Sama’ila Musa respectively.
S/N | NAMES | FROM | TO |
1. | Mal: Mansur | 2005 | 2006 |
2. | Mal: Lawali Maidamma | 2007 | 2008 |
3. | Mal:Sama’ila Musa | 2008 | 2011 |
4. | Mal:Aminu Suleiman | 2011 | 2015 |
5. | Mal: Dahiru A. Magami | 2015 | To Date |
Computer science department was accredited in 2005 to national diploma level and finally get resources accreditation in 2008 for the HND level
It has two computer labs. For ND level and HND students respectively which they all equally with systems and the necessary facilities for practical.
1.3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The ways student projects are being supervised and stored in an organization do immensely affect their proper management:these processes are accompanied with a lot of problems as follows.
- The main problem is poor communication and research progress tracking between the student and their supervisor.
- Illegibility of student handwriting.
Iii. Lots of time is being wasted during the process of supervision of the projects.
1.4 AIM AND OBJECTIVES
The project is aimed at designing new, online student project supervision system for Computer Science Department, Abdu Guasu polytechnic. These offer possible solution to the problem of the existing system.
The main objective of this research is to design a system that will minimize the problems identified. Other objectives of study are as follows:
- To design new supervision system that can be able to supervise student projects and put in a normalized database.
- To keep track and control of an authorized access at any moment by using a standard security, which improve honesty, consistency and integrity.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESEARCH
For organizations or institutions like universities and polytechnics to succeed, they need be able to process data and use information effectively.
Online portal as a conceptistherefore defined as an electronic collection and dissemination of information, which allows for efficient and effective use. This research focuses on the role of the administrator of the system, supervisor and the students which help to solve the problems that are being faced during supervision of the student project in the computer science department.
1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATION
The scope of the study covers the activities and tasks taking place during supervision of projects in computer science department, Abdu Gusau Polytechnic Talata Mafara.
The limitations of the project include the following:
- The research will focus mainly on the online supervision of projects in computer science department.
- Only the administrator, supervisor and the final year students, that is the project students who can register and view the site(have access to the site).
