Abstract

The study was to investigate the influence of the quest for wealth on the moral behavior of pastors in Nigeria. Pastors from different Christian denominations in the country have maximized the opportunity of mass patronage from citizens seeking solutions to their spiritual, social and economic problems to merchandise the gospel and the associated religious elements. The primary concern here lies on how this new religious development affects Christianity and church growth. The study adopts descriptive and analytic methods and relied on primary and secondary sources. The study challenges pastor’s perspectives on prosperity gospel and the culture of greed. From the results, this study reveals that pastor’s quest for wealth is a violation of both church and moral ethics. It goes against church’s tenets of sacredness, holiness and purity and cannot be from God. The study also posits that the gospel commercialization is an aberration and dints the image/reputation of the institution of the church. Finally, the Nigerian church pastors are being challenged to preach and practice moral values because moral values are the food and drink which keep society alive, healthy and happy.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

The relationship between the pursuit of wealth and the moral behavior of pastors in Nigeria has become an increasingly significant subject of discourse within both theological and sociological circles. In the context of Nigeria, a country with a vibrant Christian community, there has been a growing concern over the role of material wealth in shaping the actions and ethical decisions of pastors. According to Adamo (2013), the rapid economic growth and increasing prosperity in Nigeria have led to an environment where the desire for financial success and material wealth has impacted not only lay Christians but also church leaders. The temptations and pressures of wealth, particularly in the context of the prosperity gospel, have contributed to ethical compromises and have raised questions about the integrity of pastors in the country.

One of the key factors influencing the moral behavior of pastors in Nigeria is the prominence of the prosperity gospel. This theological framework, which emphasizes financial success and material abundance as signs of divine favor, has gained significant traction in many Nigerian churches. Adeyemi (2015) asserts that the doctrine of prosperity has become a powerful motivator for pastors who, in some instances, may prioritize financial gain over spiritual teachings. Pastors advocating for this gospel may be tempted to exploit the belief systems of their congregants, encouraging them to contribute large sums of money with promises of financial blessings. As a result, such pastors may adopt morally questionable practices, such as manipulating congregants into giving excessive offerings or exaggerating divine promises to secure wealth.

Furthermore, the materialism associated with the pursuit of wealth has prompted many Nigerian pastors to engage in unethical behavior, which compromises their moral authority. According to Omoniyi (2019), some pastors have been involved in activities such as financial mismanagement, fraud, and extravagant lifestyles that contradict Christian ethical teachings. This moral decay often occurs within the context of large churches, where wealth accumulation is frequently linked to church growth and leadership success. The lavish lifestyles of some pastors, which include luxury cars, mansions, and private jets, have been criticized for their inconsistency with the humble and sacrificial lifestyle prescribed in the Bible. As Omoniyi (2019) notes, the ostentatious display of wealth by pastors often creates a paradox where spiritual leadership is overshadowed by materialistic pursuits, leading to a loss of credibility among followers.

The role of church members in the moral behavior of pastors is also a significant factor in this discourse. Church members often play an enabling role in the accumulation of wealth by pastors, either through voluntary or coerced financial contributions. As Ajiboye (2018) argues, the expectations placed on congregants to support pastors financially can create a cycle of dependency and exploitation. In some cases, members are made to believe that their financial contributions directly correlate with their spiritual blessings, leading them to give beyond their means. This dynamic not only facilitates the material accumulation of pastors but also reinforces the notion that moral behavior can be overshadowed by the desire for wealth and success. The rise of the prosperity gospel, materialism, and the commercialization of religion have all contributed to a situation where financial gain sometimes takes precedence over moral teachings. The involvement of church members in financial transactions and the institutional pressures within the church further exacerbate these challenges. 1.2. Statement of the Problem

This theological and economic trend has led to concerns about the moral behavior of pastors, as many are perceived to prioritize wealth accumulation over the spiritual welfare of their congregants. The growing opulence of some Nigerian pastors, often seen in their lavish lifestyles, extravagant church buildings, and expensive personal possessions, has raised questions about the ethical implications of these practices in relation to Christian teachings on humility, sacrifice, and selflessness.

The problem lies in the tension between the religious mandate of pastors to serve as moral guides and the pressures they face to amass wealth, either through personal desire or institutional expectations. As some pastors embrace materialism and pursue financial success, their actions may undermine their moral authority and compromise the ethical principles of their leadership. Furthermore, the financial exploitation of church members, often justified under the guise of faith-based teachings, creates a cycle where financial contributions become intertwined with spiritual promises, potentially leading to unethical behavior both within the church and in broader society. Thus, this study seeks to address the gap in knowledge concerning the influence of the quest for wealth on the moral behavior of pastors in Nigeria. It will explore how the pursuit of material wealth affects the ethical conduct of pastors, the moral dilemmas they face in balancing financial success with spiritual obligations, and the broader impact of this dynamic on the church community. Understanding these issues is critical for fostering a more ethical and spiritually focused leadership within the Nigerian church, as well as for promoting a more responsible and transparent approach to wealth in Christian ministry.

1.3. Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine influence of the quest for wealth on the moral behaviour of pastors in Nigeria. The specific objectives are:

1. To examine the relationship between the pursuit of wealth and ethical decision-making among pastors in Nigeria.
2. To investigate the impact of materialism on the moral values and integrity of pastors in Nigeria.
3. To explore the role of financial incentives in shaping the behavior of pastors in their religious communities.
4. To analyze the ethical dilemmas faced by pastors in balancing their spiritual duties with financial aspirations.

The research questions are buttressed below

1. What is the relationship between the pursuit of wealth and ethical decision-making among pastors in Nigeria?
2. How does materialism impact the moral values and integrity of pastors in Nigeria?
3. What role do financial incentives play in shaping the behavior of pastors in their religious communities?
4. What ethical dilemmas do pastors face in balancing their spiritual duties with financial aspirations?

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: There is no significant relationship between the pursuit of wealth and ethical decision-making among pastors in Nigeria.

H1: There is significant relationship between the pursuit of wealth and ethical decision-making among pastors in Nigeria.

1.7. Scope of the Study

The study examines the influence of the quest for wealth on the moral behaviour of pastors in Nigeria. The study is limited to selected Pastors in Lagos, Nigeria.

1.8.  Operational Definition of Terms

1. Influence: Influence refers to the capacity to have an effect on the character, behavior, or decisions of someone or something. It involves the power to shape or change actions, beliefs, or outcomes. In the context of pastors, influence may relate to the impact a pastor’s actions or teachings have on their congregation, or how external factors like wealth or societal pressures influence a pastor’s moral behavior and decisions.
2. Quest: A quest is a long or determined pursuit of a goal or objective. It often implies a journey or ongoing effort to obtain something significant. In the context of this study, the “quest for wealth” refers to the determined or ongoing search for material wealth, which could be motivated by personal ambition, societal expectations, or the theological belief that financial prosperity is a sign of divine favor.
3. Wealth: Wealth refers to the abundance of valuable resources, especially money, property, or other forms of material goods. It represents a significant accumulation of financial resources or assets. In this context, wealth refers to the financial prosperity pastors may acquire through their religious activities, such as tithes, donations, or personal ventures, and the effect this has on their behavior, values, and ethics.
4. Moral Behaviour: Moral behavior refers to the conduct of an individual in relation to what is considered right or wrong based on ethical principles. It involves making decisions that reflect integrity, honesty, fairness, and adherence to social or religious norms. For pastors, moral behavior includes how they uphold ethical standards in their spiritual leadership, relationships with followers, financial management, and overall lifestyle.
5. Pastors: Pastors are religious leaders or ministers who are responsible for leading and guiding a congregation, usually within the Christian faith. Their duties often include preaching, teaching, counseling, conducting religious ceremonies, and providing spiritual guidance to their followers. Pastors are expected to model moral and ethical behavior and serve as moral exemplars for their communities, guiding their flock both spiritually and ethically.
