INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

The provision of health care services within the primary school setting plays a crucial role in promoting the well-being and academic performance of children. In Nigeria, the primary school health care system is essential for addressing the physical and mental health needs of young learners, particularly in rural areas. Ado Odo LGA in Ota, Ogun State, which encompasses both urban and rural communities, represents a typical example of regions where primary school health services are critical. Previous research on health care provision in schools, particularly in Nigeria, underscores significant disparities in access, availability, and quality of services, which can hinder the effective functioning of the school health system (Adekunle et al., 2020).

In the context of Ado Odo LGA, studies have highlighted several barriers to effective school health care delivery. These include inadequate infrastructure, insufficient funding, and a lack of trained health personnel. According to Ogun State’s Ministry of Health, many public primary schools in rural areas like Ado Odo LGA suffer from a shortage of qualified health professionals, such as nurses or school doctors, which affects the timely and efficient delivery of health services (Ogun State Ministry of Health, 2019). Furthermore, the integration of school health services into the educational system is often fragmented due to administrative challenges and inconsistent policy enforcement. This lack of coordination leads to gaps in services such as health screenings, first aid provision, and health education programs (Abdulsalam, 2021).

A critical element of the school health system is the provision of health education, which aims to equip pupils with knowledge about healthy lifestyles, nutrition, sanitation, and disease prevention. Research shows that effective health education programs have a direct impact on the reduction of common childhood diseases, such as malaria, diarrheal diseases, and respiratory infections, which are prevalent in rural Nigerian communities (Ezeh et al., 2018). 1.2. Statement of the Problem

The aim of the study is to examine a review of primary school health care system, of public primary School at Ado Odo LGA, Ota, Ogun State. The specific objectives are:

1. Evaluate the health care services available in public primary schools.
2. Identify any gaps or deficiencies in the primary school health care system.
3. Assess the effectiveness of existing health promotion programs in primary schools.
4. Investigate the impact of the health care system on pupil attendance and academic performance.

1.5. Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed.

Ho:  There is no significant relationship between Health care system and pupil attendance and academic performance.

H1:  There is significant relationship between Health care system and pupil attendance and academic performance.

1.6.  Significance of the Study

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

1. Primary School: Aprimary school is an educational institution that provides the first stage of formal education, typically for children between the ages of 6 and 12 years. Primary education focuses on the foundational skills in subjects such as literacy (reading and writing), mathematics, science, and social studies. It is designed to equip children with basic academic knowledge, social skills, and cognitive abilities necessary for further education. Primary schools are essential for the early development of children, laying the groundwork for future academic and personal growth.
2. Health Care System: Ahealth care system refers to the collective infrastructure, policies, personnel, and resources involved in providing health services to a population. It encompasses all institutions, practices, and individuals responsible for promoting, maintaining, and restoring health. The health care system includes public and private hospitals, clinics, healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc.), as well as preventive services like vaccinations, health education, and sanitation initiatives. A school health care system specifically refers to the health services offered within educational institutions, including medical care, health screenings, mental health support, and health education, with the aim of promoting the well-being of students.
3. Public Primary School: Apublic primary school is a primary school that is funded, managed, and regulated by the government, either at the local, state, or national level. Public primary schools are typically open to all children within a specific geographic area and are free or low-cost for students to attend. These schools are a key part of the public education system and are required to follow national or regional education standards and curricula.
