Several studies have explored the impact of social media use on academic outcomes, with mixed findings.

A growing body of research highlights the negative effects of social media on students’ academic performance. One study by Ayman and Ameer (2020) found that excessive social media use leads to procrastination and a decrease in the time spent on studying, thereby negatively affecting academic performance. Students who frequently engage in social media activities are more likely to be distracted during study hours, which in turn affects their ability to retain and apply information learned in class. This issue is particularly problematic in subjects like biology, which require understanding complex concepts such as cell biology, genetics, and ecology. The aim of the study is to examine the impact of social media on the academic performance of biology students in selected secondary schools in Abia State. The specific objectives are:

  2. To assess the correlation between social media usage and academic performance in biology subjects among students.
  3. To identify the most commonly used social media platforms among biology students in the selected secondary schools.
  4. To investigate the potential distractions caused by social media on the study habits of biology students.

  • Impact: The term “impact” refers to the effect or influence that one factor has on another. In the context of this study, impact refers to the influence that social media usage has on students’ academic performance, particularly in the subject of biology. The impact can be positive, negative, or neutral, depending on how social media affects students’ learning, behavior, and academic outcomes.
  • Social Media: Social media refers to online platforms or websites that enable users to create, share, or exchange content in various forms, including text, images, videos, and more. These platforms facilitate communication, networking, and interaction among users. Popular examples of social media include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp, YouTube, and TikTok. Social media has become a central part of daily life, especially among young people, and can both support and distract from academic endeavors.
  • Academic Performance: Academic performance refers to the level of achievement or success a student demonstrates in their educational activities. It is typically measured through grades, test scores, assignments, participation, and overall understanding of the subject matter.   • Secondary Schools: Secondary schools are educational institutions that provide education to students typically between the ages of 12 and 18. In most educational systems, secondary schools are divided into two stages: junior secondary (often grades 7-9) and senior secondary (often grades 10-12). These schools aim to prepare students for higher education or vocational training by offering a range of subjects, including sciences, mathematics, languages, and social studies. In the context of this study, secondary schools in Abia State, Nigeria, are being examined to assess how social media impacts the academic performance of biology students.
