INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

The education and training of library and information science (LIS) students in Nigeria face numerous challenges that have been well-documented in academic literature. One significant issue is the outdated curriculum that many LIS programs still follow. According to Aina (2004), many Nigerian LIS schools have not updated their curricula to reflect the rapid advancements in information technology and digital libraries. This gap leaves students ill-prepared for the modern demands of the profession, which increasingly requires proficiency in digital tools and online information management.

Another challenge is the lack of adequate funding for LIS programs. Okiy (2005) highlights that many LIS schools in Nigeria suffer from insufficient financial resources, which affects their ability to provide up-to-date learning materials, modern facilities, and qualified teaching staff. This financial constraint often results in overcrowded classrooms, outdated textbooks, and limited access to digital resources, all of which hinder the quality of education that students receive.

The shortage of qualified teaching staff is another critical issue. According to Ocholla and Bothma (2007), there is a significant gap between the number of students enrolled in LIS programs and the availability of experienced and knowledgeable faculty members. This shortage is partly due to the brain drain phenomenon, where qualified professionals leave Nigeria for better opportunities abroad. The lack of experienced educators means that students may not receive the mentorship and guidance necessary to develop their skills fully.

Technological infrastructure is also a major concern. Many LIS schools in Nigeria lack the necessary technological tools and internet connectivity to support modern library science education. As noted by Ebijuwa (2005), the absence of reliable internet access and computer facilities makes it difficult for students to engage in practical learning experiences, such as online cataloging and digital archiving. This technological gap further exacerbates the disconnect between the skills taught in LIS programs and the competencies required in the job market.

Furthermore, there is a significant issue with the practical training component of LIS education. According to Popoola and Haliso (2009), many LIS programs in Nigeria do not offer sufficient opportunities for hands-on experience through internships or practicum placements. This lack of practical training means that students often graduate without the real-world experience needed to navigate the complexities of modern library and information environments effectively.

Lastly, the perception of the LIS profession in Nigeria poses a challenge. As observed by Nwalo (2000), there is a general lack of awareness and appreciation for the role of librarians and information scientists in society. This undervaluation can lead to low enrollment in LIS programs and a lack of motivation among students. Addressing this issue requires concerted efforts to raise the profile of the profession and highlight its importance in the information age.

The education and training of LIS students in Nigeria are hampered by outdated curricula, inadequate funding, a shortage of qualified staff, poor technological infrastructure, insufficient practical training, and societal undervaluation of the profession. 1.2. Statement of the Problem

The study examines Challenge in education and training of library and information science students in Nigeria. The study is limited to students of Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi (WUFPBK).

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Challenge: A challenge refers to a task or situation that tests someone’s abilities. In the context of education and training, it often implies difficulties or obstacles that need to be overcome to achieve a goal.

Education: Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. It typically takes place under the guidance of educators, but learners may also educate themselves.

Training: Training is the act of teaching or developing in oneself or others any skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies. It has specific goals of improving one’s capability, capacity, productivity, and performance.

Library: A library is a collection of sources of information and similar resources, made accessible to a defined community for reference or borrowing. It provides physical or digital access to material, and may be a physical building or room, or a virtual space, or both.

Information Science: Information science is an interdisciplinary field primarily concerned with the analysis, collection, classification, manipulation, storage, retrieval, and dissemination of information. It involves the study of how people and organizations use information, and the systems and processes that support this use.

Students: Students are individuals who are engaged in learning, typically enrolled in an educational institution. They can be of any age and can be studying at any level, from primary school to higher education and beyond.
