INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

Rodent infestations have long been a significant concern for public health and the environment. The primary cause of rodent infestations is the availability of food, water, and shelter in human settlements. According to MacDonald and Proulx (2013), rats and mice are opportunistic animals that thrive in urban areas due to the abundant food supply and favorable living conditions. Poor waste management, overflowing garbage, and improperly stored food products often attract rodents to urban environments (Bhat et al., 2016). Furthermore, climate change and urbanization exacerbate the problem, as they can lead to the displacement of rodents from natural habitats into human-dominated areas (Himsworth et al., 2017). As human populations expand, the encroachment of rodent habitats increases, promoting greater interactions between humans and rodents.

Rodents, particularly rats and mice, are notorious vectors of a variety of diseases that can severely impact human health. The World Health Organization (WHO) (2018) highlights that rodents are known to transmit diseases such as leptospirosis, hantavirus, salmonellosis, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV). Leptospirosis, for instance, is primarily transmitted through direct contact with rodent urine or contaminated water, leading to potentially life-threatening symptoms including liver damage, kidney failure, and respiratory distress (Srikantiah et al., 2017). The infestation of rodents can also lead to the spread of bacteria and parasites, such as fleas and ticks, which may carry diseases like plague and murine typhus (Chomel, 2019). In highly populated urban areas, the risk of disease transmission is heightened, particularly in low-income neighborhoods where sanitation practices are often inadequate (Bhat et al., 2016).

Rodents not only pose a direct threat to human health but also have significant negative effects on the environment. Their burrowing activities can destabilize soil and disrupt ecosystems, leading to erosion and the destruction of vegetation (Smith et al., 2015). In agricultural settings, rodents can cause extensive damage to crops, leading to significant economic losses for farmers (Pimentel et al., 2000). Furthermore, the presence of rodents in sensitive ecosystems, such as islands, poses a danger to native species, particularly those that are not adapted to the invasive behavior of rodents. For instance, the introduction of rats to islands has led to the extinction of several native bird species (Lowe et al., 2018). Thus, the environmental consequences of rodent infestations are wide-ranging, affecting both biodiversity and the sustainability of agricultural practices.

Thus, while rodent infestations remain a significant issue, innovative and holistic approaches to prevention and control offer hope for reducing their impact on human health and the environment.

 

1.2. Statement of the Problem

Rodent infestation has become a significant public health concern in many urban and peri-urban areas worldwide, and the town of Offa in Kwara State, Nigeria, is no exception. Over recent years, there has been an increasing number of complaints from residents regarding rodent-related problems, which have prompted concerns about their impact on both public health and the environment. Offa, like many other growing towns, has experienced rapid urbanization, which, coupled with poor waste management practices and inadequate sanitation infrastructure, has created favorable conditions for rodent populations to thrive. As a result, the community is facing heightened risks of rodent-borne diseases, environmental degradation, and food contamination. However, despite the growing concern, little research has been conducted to specifically assess the causes and effects of rodent infestation in Offa, thus necessitating a focused investigation.

Rodents, particularly rats and mice, are known to be vectors of several dangerous diseases, many of which can be transmitted to humans through direct contact with rodent droppings, urine, or bites. In Offa, where sanitation practices in many parts of the town are substandard, rodents are likely to thrive in poorly managed waste dumps, stagnant water, and unsanitary homes, increasing the risk of disease transmission. Diseases such as leptospirosis, salmonellosis, and hantavirus, which are prevalent in areas with high rodent populations, are often contracted by individuals who come into contact with contaminated water sources or food. Furthermore, rodent infestations are a major source of food contamination in households and commercial food establishments, posing additional threats to public health and food security. This situation calls for an urgent examination of the factors contributing to rodent infestations in Offa and their public health implications.

In addition to their direct health impacts, rodents also have significant environmental effects, particularly in urban areas where they are known to cause damage to infrastructure and ecosystems. Rodents in Offa are reported to burrow in the foundations of homes, schools, and other buildings, weakening the structural integrity of these structures. 1.3. Aim and Objectives of the Study

  2. Assess the impact of rodent infestation on human health, including the spread of diseases.
  3. Evaluate the environmental consequences of rodent infestation, such as damage to infrastructure and contamination of food sources.
  4. Investigate the effectiveness of rodent control measures in reducing infestation rates.

1.5  Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: Rodent control measures is not effective in reducing infestation rates.

H1: Rodent control measures is effective in reducing infestation rates.

1.6. Significance of the Study

The significance of this study lies in its potential to provide critical insights into the causes and effects of rodent infestations, specifically in the context of Offa. Rodents, particularly rats and mice, are known vectors for a range of infectious diseases such as leptospirosis, hantavirus, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV). By evaluating the factors contributing to rodent infestations in Offa, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of rodent populations, their breeding conditions, and the environmental factors that facilitate their proliferation. This knowledge is vital for the development of targeted interventions to mitigate the risks posed by rodents to public health in this region.

1.7  Scope of the Study

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Evaluation: Evaluation refers to the systematic process of assessing, analyzing, and interpreting data or information to understand a situation, identify key factors, and make informed conclusions or recommendations. In the context of this study, evaluation involves examining the causes, effects, and impacts of rodent infestation on human health and the environment.

Causes: Causes refer to the underlying factors or conditions that trigger or contribute to a particular phenomenon or event. In the context of rodent infestation, causes may include environmental, socio-economic, and behavioral factors that lead to the proliferation of rodents in a given area, such as poor waste management, inadequate sanitation, climate conditions, or urbanization.

Effects: Effects are the outcomes or consequences of an event, action, or phenomenon. In this study, the effects of rodent infestation include the direct and indirect impacts on human health, such as disease transmission, as well as the broader environmental and economic repercussions, such as crop damage and infrastructure degradation.

Rodent Infestation: Rodent infestation refers to the uncontrolled presence and reproduction of rodents, particularly rats and mice, in a given area.
