Project – Impact of Christianity on the structural development
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
- Background to the Study
The impact of Christianity on the structural development of various communities in Nigeria has been widely discussed in academic literature. Christianity, as a major religious and cultural force, has significantly influenced societal transformation, including the economic, educational, and infrastructural aspects of Nigerian communities. In the case of Biase Local Government Area (LGA) in Cross River State, the Christian mission has played a pivotal role in shaping the region’s development, particularly in the areas of education, health care, and infrastructural growth. The presence of Christian missionaries in Biase dates back to the early 20th century, with the church becoming an agent for social change, especially as it sought to provide essential services that were previously absent (Agbiji & Ilesanmi, 2013).
Christianity’s impact on education in Biase LGA is one of the most profound ways through which it has contributed to structural development. Christian missions established some of the earliest schools in the region, fostering literacy and the spread of modern knowledge. The missionary schools, often seen as the foundation of formal education in many Nigerian communities, provided the local population with access to Western-style education, which had far-reaching consequences for socio-economic mobility. Studies have shown that missionary schools in Biase were not only places of academic learning but also centers for moral and social instruction, shaping the worldview and the cultural development of the people (Adeboye, 2005). The legacy of these schools continues to manifest in the increasing literacy rate and the establishment of new educational institutions in the region.
The introduction of Christianity also brought about changes in healthcare systems in Biase LGA. Christian missions were instrumental in establishing some of the first hospitals and health clinics in the area, filling the gaps left by inadequate government health infrastructure. The establishment of hospitals like the St. Theresa’s Hospital in the region facilitated the delivery of Western-style medical care, contributing to a reduction in mortality rates and improving the general health of the local population. This direct impact on public health has had a significant influence on the social structure of Biase LGA, as healthier communities are better positioned to pursue economic and educational opportunities. According to Okechukwu (2010), Christian missionary healthcare initiatives were integral in curbing the spread of diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, and smallpox in various regions of Nigeria.
In terms of infrastructural development, Christianity has also contributed to the construction of roads, churches, and social centers. The building of churches, in particular, not only served as religious centers but also as community gathering points. These churches often became focal points for further community development initiatives, such as the construction of markets, roads, and other public utilities. Christian denominations, especially the Catholic and Protestant missions, were key players in initiating these projects, which were aimed at uplifting the local population. The presence of such infrastructure has often led to the creation of a more organized and connected local community, facilitating trade and communication both within and outside Biase LGA (Nwafor, 2016).
However, the role of Christianity in the structural development of Biase LGA is not without its challenges and criticisms. While Christian missions undoubtedly played a significant role in educational and health-related infrastructure development, some scholars argue that their influence led to the erosion of indigenous cultural practices and beliefs. According to Isichei (1995), the spread of Christianity often resulted in the undermining of traditional governance structures and the imposition of Western norms and values on local populations. In Biase, as in other parts of Nigeria, this cultural transformation has been a double-edged sword, as it has both facilitated modern development and created tensions between traditional and religious worldviews. Furthermore, the concentration of power in Christian institutions has, at times, led to imbalances in local political and social systems, with church leaders sometimes assuming roles of influence that overshadow indigenous leadership structures (Akintunde, 2007).
Despite these challenges, the long-term impact of Christianity on the structural development of Biase LGA is generally viewed positively. It is evident that the church has played a key role in shaping the modern infrastructure and social systems of the region, particularly in education, healthcare, and community building. The legacy of Christian missions in Biase LGA highlights the complex ways in which religious institutions can contribute to societal progress. However, as Nigeria continues to grapple with issues of religious and cultural diversity, the role of Christianity in future development will need to be carefully navigated to ensure that it complements rather than undermines the traditional values and structures of local communities (Falola & Heaton, 2008).
1.2. Statement of the Problem
The role of Christianity in the development of local communities across Nigeria is a subject of considerable academic interest. In Biase Local Government Area (LGA) of Cross River State, the influence of Christianity has been profound in shaping the socio-economic and infrastructural development of the region. However, despite the widespread acknowledgment of Christianity’s contributions to education, healthcare, and community building, there remains a significant gap in understanding the full extent of its impact on the structural development of Biase LGA. While some studies have explored the influence of Christian missions in other Nigerian regions, the unique socio-cultural dynamics of Biase LGA require a focused investigation to assess how Christianity has specifically shaped its physical and socio-political infrastructure over time.
One of the critical gaps in existing literature is the lack of empirical research specifically linking Christian missionary activities with the development of key infrastructure such as roads, schools, hospitals, and community centers in Biase LGA. The establishment of mission schools, health clinics, and churches by various Christian denominations in the region has undeniably played a role in the region’s infrastructural growth. However, it is unclear how these religious institutions have directly contributed to the region’s broader socio-economic transformations, including the improvement of access to education, healthcare, and public services. Moreover, while much has been written about the general impact of Christianity in other Nigerian communities, there is limited research that directly connects these religious contributions to the sustainable and tangible development of Biase LGA.
Furthermore, while the introduction of Christianity brought about substantial infrastructural development, there is a need to examine the socio-cultural implications of this religious influence on local governance and traditional leadership structures. In Biase, as in many other parts of Nigeria, the spread of Christianity has often resulted in changes to indigenous cultural practices and traditional governance systems. The question arises whether the Christian mission’s involvement in governance, education, and healthcare has strengthened or undermined traditional institutions. There is a need to investigate whether the imposition of Western religious and administrative structures has led to the marginalization of indigenous cultural practices, and if so, how this has affected the socio-political fabric of Biase LGA.
Another significant issue that warrants investigation is the potential socio-economic disparities that may have arisen as a result of the Christian mission’s developmental activities. While the church has undeniably contributed to the development of key sectors, including education and healthcare, there may be concerns about the equitable distribution of these benefits across Biase LGA. The concentration of resources in Christian-run institutions could have led to uneven development, with some communities benefiting more than others. This issue of unequal development within Biase LGA raises important questions about the inclusivity and sustainability of the structural changes brought about by Christianity. Understanding the nature of these disparities is crucial for developing more equitable approaches to local development.
Moreover, the relationship between Christianity and local governance structures in Biase LGA needs further exploration. The presence of Christian missions and the influence of church leaders may have had an unintended impact on local politics and power dynamics. In some cases, the alignment of religious leaders with political elites has led to the concentration of power within certain segments of the community, which could undermine democratic governance processes. Investigating how Christian institutions interact with local political structures will help shed light on the potential for religious influence to both facilitate and hinder transparent and participatory governance in Biase LGA.
Finally, the long-term sustainability of development initiatives driven by Christianity in Biase LGA remains an open question. Although Christian missions have been instrumental in creating a foundation for socio-economic progress, there is a need to assess whether these initiatives are self-sustaining or dependent on external religious support. The question arises whether the development programs initiated by Christian missions in Biase LGA have established a self-sustaining model of growth that can thrive independently of religious institutions in the future. Addressing these concerns will provide valuable insights into the sustainability of religiously-driven development and its implications for long-term progress in Biase LGA.

1.6. Significance of the Study
The significance of this study lies in its exploration of the role Christianity has played in shaping the structural development of Biase Local Government Area (LGA) in Cross River State. Christianity, which has been a dominant influence in the socio-cultural landscape of Nigeria for centuries, has not only contributed to spiritual well-being but has also played a pivotal role in the transformation of communities. By investigating the impact of Christian religious practices and institutions on the local infrastructure, education, healthcare, and social institutions, this study seeks to provide a deeper understanding of how religion influences regional development in an African context.
One of the primary contributions of this study is its potential to document and analyze the various ways in which Christian missions and churches have influenced infrastructural growth in Biase. From the establishment of schools and healthcare facilities to the development of roads and public buildings, Christian organizations have historically been involved in the construction and enhancement of physical infrastructure. By examining the extent to which these religious bodies have invested in and contributed to the physical development of Biase, the study will highlight the often-overlooked intersection between religion and economic growth.
Another significant aspect of the study is its focus on the educational development within Biase. Christianity has been instrumental in the establishment of formal education systems in many African communities, and Biase is no exception. The construction of schools, provision of scholarships, and establishment of Christian-based educational curricula have shaped the intellectual landscape of the area. This study will assess how these educational initiatives have not only improved literacy rates but have also contributed to a broader socio-economic development, empowering local communities with the knowledge and skills necessary for sustainable growth.
Moreover, this research will contribute to a greater understanding of the social and cultural impacts of Christianity in Biase. The church has often been a center for social interaction, conflict resolution, and community cohesion. By examining the role of Christian institutions in fostering social capital and strengthening communal bonds, the study will provide insight into how religion can serve as a unifying force in a diverse society. This aspect of the research is particularly significant in understanding how Christianity helps mitigate socio-political tensions and promotes peacebuilding at the local level.
This study will also have practical implications for policymakers, religious leaders, and development practitioners interested in leveraging religion for regional development. By understanding the positive contributions of Christianity to local development in Biase, this research may inform future initiatives that integrate religious organizations into broader development strategies. This could lead to more effective partnerships between government agencies, religious institutions, and local communities to promote sustainable development and improve living standards in the area.
Finally, the significance of this study extends to the academic field of religious studies and development studies. While there is a growing body of literature on the role of religion in development, studies focusing specifically on the impact of Christianity in rural Nigerian communities, such as Biase, remain limited. By contributing to this body of knowledge, the study will not only expand academic discourse on the role of Christianity in structural development but also provide a model for similar research in other parts of Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa. Through a rigorous examination of Biase’s experience, this research could serve as a reference point for understanding the complex relationship between religion and development in African contexts.
