INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

The relationship between leadership strategies and secondary school students’ performance has garnered significant attention in educational research. Leadership in the context of schools is often considered a crucial determinant of academic outcomes, as leaders are responsible for setting the tone, fostering a supportive learning environment, and influencing teaching quality. According to Leithwood et al. (2004), effective school leadership directly impacts student achievement by shaping both the school culture and instructional practices. These leaders play a vital role in creating a conducive environment for learning by setting clear expectations, modeling best practices, and ensuring that resources are used efficiently. A key component of effective leadership is the ability to build strong relationships with both teachers and students, which has been shown to enhance student motivation and engagement (Hattie, 2009).

Several leadership strategies have been identified as having a positive impact on student performance. Transformational leadership, for example, encourages leaders to inspire and motivate teachers and students through a shared vision and high expectations. According to Bass and Avolio (1994), transformational leaders focus on developing individuals’ potential and fostering an environment that encourages innovation and growth. In schools, such leadership has been linked to improved teacher morale, higher levels of student engagement, and ultimately better academic outcomes (Leithwood & Jantzi, 2005). These leaders are often seen as change agents who not only guide their schools through challenges but also promote a culture of continuous improvement, which has direct implications for students’ academic success.

Another leadership approach that has been widely discussed in the literature is distributed leadership. In contrast to traditional, hierarchical models, distributed leadership involves shared decision-making, collaboration, and collective responsibility among staff members (Spillane, 2006). This strategy empowers teachers and other school staff, fostering a sense of ownership and commitment to the school’s goals. Research by Harris (2008) highlights that distributed leadership can have a positive effect on student achievement by enhancing the capacity of teachers to address student needs effectively. Schools that embrace this model are more likely to implement innovative teaching practices, respond to diverse learning styles, and create inclusive environments where all students can thrive.

The role of instructional leadership has also been extensively studied in relation to student performance. Instructional leaders focus primarily on improving teaching and learning processes within the school. This involves setting high expectations for academic standards, monitoring classroom practices, and providing professional development opportunities for teachers (Supovitz & Turner, 2000). Research by Robinson et al. (2008) found that instructional leadership has a strong effect on student achievement, especially when leaders actively engage in supporting and developing the instructional capabilities of their teachers. By focusing on improving the quality of teaching, instructional leaders create an environment where students are more likely to succeed academically, as high-quality instruction is consistently linked to improved student outcomes.

A positive school climate, characterized by safety, respect, and a sense of belonging, has been shown to enhance students’ motivation, reduce behavioral issues, and improve academic outcomes (Cohen et al., 2009). Leaders who prioritize a supportive and inclusive school culture are more likely to foster an environment where students feel motivated and encouraged to succeed. Furthermore, strong leadership in this area can promote effective communication between teachers, parents, and students, which in turn can enhance the overall educational experience and lead to better student performance.

Finally, the role of school leadership in addressing challenges such as socio-economic disparities and learning difficulties is crucial for improving student performance. 1.2  Statement of the Problem

The academic performance of secondary school students remains a critical concern for educators, policymakers, and researchers alike. Despite numerous educational reforms and initiatives aimed at improving outcomes, many students continue to face challenges in achieving their full academic potential. One key factor that has been shown to influence student performance is the role of school leadership. While leadership is often recognized as central to shaping the overall direction of a school, there is a need for further exploration of how specific leadership strategies affect student outcomes, particularly in secondary schools. The lack of clarity regarding the most effective leadership approaches for improving student performance presents a significant gap in both theory and practice, which this study seeks to address.

Research on leadership in education has suggested that effective leadership can lead to improvements in teaching quality, school climate, and student engagement, all of which are crucial for enhancing academic performance (Leithwood et al., 2004). However, the diverse nature of school environments and student populations complicates the ability to generalize findings about leadership effectiveness. While transformational leadership, instructional leadership, and distributed leadership have each been associated with positive educational outcomes, the impact of these strategies on secondary school students’ performance remains underexplored in many contexts. Consequently, there is a pressing need to understand how these leadership strategies manifest in secondary schools and which elements are most influential in boosting student achievement.

In secondary schools, students face a variety of academic and socio-emotional challenges that can affect their ability to perform at their best. These challenges include issues such as learning difficulties, socio-economic disparities, and mental health concerns. School leadership plays a pivotal role in addressing these barriers, yet there is insufficient research on how leadership strategies can effectively support students who face these specific challenges. Moreover, leadership approaches that work well in primary or higher education settings may not necessarily translate to secondary schools due to the unique developmental stages and academic demands of adolescent students. This gap in knowledge underscores the need for targeted research on leadership strategies tailored to the specific needs of secondary school students.

Another significant issue is the variability in leadership quality across different schools, even within the same educational systems. Leadership is not a one-size-fits-all model, and what works in one school may not be effective in another. For example, while some schools may benefit from a transformational leadership approach that emphasizes vision, motivation, and innovation, others may require a more structured, instructional leadership style to ensure that teaching practices are aligned with curriculum goals and academic standards. The inconsistency in leadership strategies and their impact on student outcomes suggests that a deeper investigation into the specific conditions under which different leadership strategies are most effective is necessary.

Furthermore, the current literature on leadership strategies and student performance tends to focus on the overall effects of leadership, without delving into the specific mechanisms through which leadership influences student outcomes. For instance, while studies may show a correlation between leadership practices and academic achievement, they often do not explain how these practices translate into improvements in classroom teaching, student motivation, or school climate. Understanding the precise pathways through which leadership strategies affect student performance is crucial for developing actionable recommendations for school leaders and educators. Without this understanding, it is challenging to implement targeted interventions that address the root causes of underperformance.

Finally, there is a growing need for research that examines the long-term effects of leadership strategies on student outcomes. While many studies focus on short-term academic achievements, such as test scores or graduation rates, there is less attention paid to how leadership influences other dimensions of student development, such as critical thinking skills, social-emotional learning, and post-secondary success. Secondary education is a critical stage in students’ academic careers, and the leadership strategies employed during this time can have lasting effects on students’ future achievements. Therefore, examining the long-term impact of leadership strategies on a wide range of student outcomes is essential to fully understand the role of leadership in secondary schools.

1.3  Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine Impact of leadership strategies on secondary school students’ performance in Pankshin local government area of Plateau State. The specific

2. How is the academic performance of secondary school students in Pankshin local government area assessed?
3. Is there a correlation between leadership strategies and students’ academic performance in Pankshin local government area?
4. What are the most effective leadership strategies that positively impact students’ performance in Pankshin local government area?

1.5  Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: Leadership strategies has no significant impact on students’ academic performance.

H1: Leadership strategies has significant impact on students’ academic performance.

1.6  Significance of the Study

Given the growing challenges that secondary school students face in terms of academic achievement, mental health, and socio-economic disparities, it is crucial to identify the leadership strategies that can most effectively support students in overcoming these barriers. By exploring how different leadership strategies, such as transformational, instructional, and distributed leadership, influence students’ academic outcomes, this study can provide valuable insights that inform both educational practice and policy. The findings could guide school leaders in making evidence-based decisions about which leadership styles best address the needs of their students and contribute to improved student performance.

This study is particularly significant for educational leaders and policymakers who seek to enhance the quality of education at the secondary level. 1.7  Scope of the Study

The study examines the impact of leadership strategies on secondary school students’ performance in Pankshin local government area of Plateau State. The study is limited to selected secondary school students’ in Pankshin local government area of Plateau State.

1.8  Operational Definition of Terms

Impact: In this context, “impact” refers to the effect or influence that something has on a particular outcome. It is the measurable or observable change that results from an action, decision, or strategy. In terms of education, it could be the effect of teaching methods, leadership practices, or other interventions on students’ learning or school performance.

Leadership Strategies: Leadership strategies in education are the approaches or methods used by school leaders (such as principals, administrators, or department heads) to guide, influence, and motivate staff and students. These strategies might include communication styles, decision-making processes, goal-setting practices, or ways to foster collaboration and engagement among teachers and students. In a secondary school setting, leadership strategies are designed to create an environment that promotes academic success, personal development, and overall school improvement.

Secondary School: A secondary school is an educational institution that typically serves students between the ages of 11 and 18, covering the stages of education after primary school and before higher education (like university or vocational training). In many countries, secondary education is divided into two stages: lower secondary (grades 7–9) and upper secondary (grades 10–12).

Students: Students are individuals enrolled in an educational institution, in this case, secondary school. They are the primary focus of educational efforts, and their learning, behavior, and academic outcomes are central to educational discussions.

Performance: In the context of education, performance refers to how well students perform academically or in other areas of school life. This can be measured in terms of grades, test scores, participation, attendance, and other indicators of student success. Performance may also refer to broader aspects such as behavior, leadership skills, social development, or extracurricular achievements.
