INTRODUCTION
- Background to the Study
The effectiveness of learning in primary schools is influenced by a multitude of factors, both internal and external to the learners. Among these, learner-specific factors such as cognitive development, motivation, prior knowledge, and socio-emotional well-being—play a significant role in shaping educational outcomes. Research has shown that cognitive abilities, such as attention, memory, and problem-solving skills, are foundational to a child’s learning success. According to Piaget (1972), cognitive development occurs in stages, and the ability to understand complex concepts in primary education depends on the child’s current stage of intellectual maturity. Children in the early primary years are often in the pre-operational or concrete operational stages, where hands-on, concrete learning experiences are crucial for developing foundational skills (Piaget, 1972).
Motivation is another key factor influencing learner engagement and achievement. Deci and Ryan’s (1985) Self-Determination Theory emphasizes the importance of intrinsic motivation for effective learning. When learners are intrinsically motivated, they engage in activities for the inherent satisfaction they derive, which leads to deeper learning and better retention of knowledge. Studies have shown that primary school children who perceive learning as enjoyable and meaningful are more likely to achieve high academic performance (Schunk, Pintrich, & Meece, 2008). Motivation is also closely linked to the learning environment, where teacher encouragement, feedback, and classroom dynamics can foster or hinder a child’s enthusiasm for learning (Ryan & Deci, 2000).
Prior knowledge plays a crucial role in how learners assimilate new information. Bransford, Brown, and Cocking (2000) argue that learners’ existing knowledge structures act as scaffolds for new learning. Children who come to school with a solid base of knowledge—whether from home, previous schooling, or other informal learning experiences—are more likely to grasp new concepts quickly and build upon them. Conversely, gaps in prior knowledge can create challenges for effective learning, requiring additional instructional support and differentiated teaching methods. Vygotsky (1978) introduced the concept of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), suggesting that learners can only fully benefit from new experiences if the tasks are appropriately challenging but within their current ability level, which hinges on prior knowledge.
Socio-emotional factors, such as a learner’s emotional well-being and social environment, also significantly impact primary education outcomes. Emotional regulation, social skills, and the ability to form positive relationships are critical for pupils’ overall success in school. Raver and Zigler (2004) argue that emotional competence supports not only academic achievement but also social adaptation. Children who experience emotional stress, bullying, or unstable home environments may struggle with attention, concentration, and interaction with peers, which can interfere with their learning (Zins et al., 2007). For example, the Pygmalion effect highlights how teachers’ expectations can influence pupil performance; when teachers believe in a child’s ability to succeed, they often provide more encouragement, attention, and opportunities for growth (Rosenthal & Jacobson, 1968).
The effectiveness of learning in primary schools is intricately linked to a range of learner-specific factors, including cognitive development, motivation, prior knowledge, socio-emotional well-being, and teacher expectations. - Statement of the Problem
In primary schools, effective learning is not only determined by the curriculum or teaching methods but also by the individual characteristics of the learners themselves. The interaction between a child’s cognitive, emotional, social, and motivational factors significantly influences their academic performance and overall learning experience. While much attention has been given to external factors such as teaching quality and school infrastructure, there is a growing recognition of how learner-specific factors impact educational outcomes. However, despite its importance, there is a gap in understanding how these internal learner factors interact with external teaching and learning processes to affect overall academic achievement in primary education. This gap in research and practice underscores the need to further explore how cognitive, motivational, and socio-emotional factors among primary school learners can either facilitate or hinder effective learning.
One key issue is the impact of cognitive factors, such as attention, memory, and problem-solving skills, on primary school learning. Young learners’ cognitive abilities develop at different rates, which can lead to varying levels of readiness to engage with curriculum content. This variation presents a challenge for teachers in addressing the diverse learning needs of pupils. Some children may struggle with basic skills such as reading, writing, or mathematics due to differences in cognitive development, while others may find the standard curriculum insufficiently challenging. The literature review is based on the Impact of Learner’s Factors on Effective Learning in Primary Schools. The specific objectives of the study are:
- To identify the various learner factors that influence effective learning in primary schools.
- To examine the relationship between learner factors such as motivation, learning styles, and socio-economic background on academic performance.
- To assess the impact of teacher-pupil interactions on the learning outcomes of primary school pupils.
- To explore the role of parental involvement in supporting effective learning in primary schools.

By equipping educators with the knowledge and skills to understand and respond to the varied needs of learners—whether related to cognitive, emotional, social, or motivational factors—schools can improve their overall teaching effectiveness. Teacher preparation programs that incorporate a comprehensive understanding of these factors will help teachers create more inclusive, responsive, and adaptive learning environments. In turn, this will lead to improved educational outcomes and a more positive school experience for all pupils.
1.7. Scope of the Study
The study examines Impact of Learner’s Factors on Effective Learning in Primary Schools. The study is limited to five selected Primary Schools in Ikorodu, Lagos.
1.8. Operational Definition of Terms
1. Impact: Impact refers to the significant effect or influence that one thing has on another. In the context of education, it describes the way various factors, such as a learner’s personal characteristics or external conditions, influence the outcomes of the learning process. For instance, the impact of learner’s factors on effective learning refers to how personal, social, or environmental factors affect a pupil’s ability to succeed in learning.
2. Learner’s Factors: Learner’s factors refer to the personal attributes and circumstances that influence a pupil’s learning ability and performance. These factors can include cognitive abilities (such as memory, problem-solving, and attention), emotional well-being (such as self-esteem, anxiety, and motivation), socio-economic background (including family support and resources), learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic), and even health conditions. These individual differences play a crucial role in determining how effectively a learner can absorb, process, and apply new information.
3. Effective Learning: Effective learning is the process through which pupils acquire, retain, and apply knowledge or skills in a way that leads to meaningful academic growth. Effective learning involves not only achieving academic success (e.g., good grades or test scores) but also fostering a deep understanding of concepts, the ability to apply knowledge in various contexts, and the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It is often characterized by active engagement, motivation, clear understanding, and the ability to reflect on and apply what has been learned.
4. Primary Schools: Primary schools are educational institutions that provide the first stage of formal education, typically for children aged 4 to 11 or 12. Primary education is focused on foundational learning in subjects such as reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. It is designed to develop the basic skills and knowledge necessary for future learning in secondary and higher education. Primary schools also play an essential role in the social and emotional development of children, helping them build communication skills, social responsibility, and emotional resilience.
