INTRODUCTION
- Background to the Study
The relationship between lifestyle choices and academic performance in secondary school students has been widely discussed in the literature, emphasizing the significant impact that students’ day-to-day habits have on their learning ability. Lifestyle factors, including diet, physical activity, sleep, and time management, contribute significantly to students’ cognitive function, emotional regulation, and overall academic achievement. According to Dewald et al. (2010), adequate sleep and a balanced diet are associated with improved memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills, all of which are essential for academic success. In contrast, poor lifestyle choices, such as irregular sleep patterns and unhealthy eating habits, can impair cognitive functions and lead to lower academic performance.
Sleep is one of the most critical lifestyle factors influencing students’ learning ability. Several studies have highlighted the correlation between insufficient sleep and academic difficulties in adolescents. A study by Short et al. (2013) found that students who sleep less than the recommended 8–10 hours per night tend to perform worse in school due to impairments in memory, attention, and executive function. Furthermore, sleep deprivation has been linked to increased stress levels, anxiety, and mood disorders, all of which further hinder learning. As a result, educational institutions are increasingly advocating for the importance of healthy sleep habits to support student learning and well-being (Becker et al., 2018).
Physical activity is another critical aspect of students’ lifestyle that impacts their learning ability. Regular physical activity has been shown to enhance brain function by improving attention, memory, and executive skills, which are essential for effective learning. In a review of studies on physical activity and academic performance, Singh et al. (2012) concluded that students who engage in regular exercise tend to have better grades, enhanced cognitive abilities, and lower levels of anxiety and depression. Moreover, physical activity promotes the release of endorphins, which improve mood and reduce stress, further fostering a positive learning environment. However, despite these benefits, many secondary school students struggle to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines due to academic pressures and the increased use of digital devices for leisure.
Diet also plays a critical role in determining students’ cognitive performance. Poor nutrition, particularly the consumption of high-sugar, high-fat foods, has been associated with cognitive decline, decreased attention span, and poorer academic results (Lacomba et al., 2018). A study by McNaughton et al. (2013) found that students who consumed a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains tended to perform better in school and exhibited enhanced cognitive functioning compared to those with poor dietary habits. Nutrient deficiencies, such as low iron or vitamin D levels, can also impair cognitive abilities, leading to problems with concentration, memory, and learning capacity (Pallin et al., 2017). Consequently, adopting a healthy, balanced diet is essential for optimizing students’ learning potential.
Time management skills are a crucial element of students’ lifestyle that significantly influences their learning ability. Students who effectively manage their time are better able to balance academic, extracurricular, and personal commitments, which can lead to improved academic performance. A study by Britton and Tesser (1991) revealed that students with strong time management skills were more likely to achieve higher grades and exhibit less stress. Furthermore, effective time management allows students to allocate sufficient time for studying, completing assignments, and engaging in extracurricular activities, all of which contribute to a well-rounded education. Conversely, poor time management is linked to procrastination, increased stress, and academic underachievement (Zimmerman, 2000).
In conclusion, the lifestyle choices of secondary school students—encompassing sleep patterns, physical activity, diet, and time management—have a profound effect on their learning abilities. The growing body of research suggests that fostering healthy habits in these areas can significantly enhance students’ cognitive function, emotional well-being, and academic performance. Schools, parents, and communities must work together to create environments that support the adoption of healthy lifestyles, ensuring that students have the tools necessary to succeed academically and thrive in other areas of life. Future research should continue to explore the intricate ways in which these lifestyle factors interact to shape students’ educational outcomes and overall well-being.
1.2. Statement of the Problem
The academic performance and overall well-being of secondary school students are influenced by various factors, among which lifestyle choices—such as sleep patterns, physical activity, diet, and time management—play a significant role. While these factors are widely recognized as important, there is a growing concern that many students fail to adopt healthy lifestyle habits, which can have detrimental effects on their learning ability. Poor sleep quality, inadequate nutrition, sedentary behavior, and inefficient time management have been observed to negatively impact students’ cognitive abilities, emotional regulation, and academic outcomes. Despite the widespread acknowledgment of these issues, the extent to which lifestyle factors contribute to learning difficulties in secondary school students remains underexplored in many educational contexts.
Secondary school students face increasing academic pressures, which can lead to poor lifestyle choices. For instance, the demands of homework, exams, and extracurricular activities often result in sleep deprivation, with many students sacrificing rest in favor of academic work. As a result, the cumulative effects of sleep deprivation are evident in decreased cognitive functioning, attention deficits, and difficulties with memory retention—key components of academic success. Despite evidence suggesting that sleep is critical for learning, sleep-related issues among students have not received sufficient attention from educators, policymakers, or even parents. This lack of focus on sleep hygiene may be contributing to the growing academic struggles observed in secondary schools worldwide.
In addition to sleep issues, poor diet and limited physical activity are also contributing factors that hinder students’ academic performance. Studies have shown that inadequate nutrition and a lack of physical activity can negatively affect students’ cognitive function, concentration, and ability to manage stress. With the increasing availability of fast food and sugary snacks, many students opt for diets high in processed foods, which have been linked to reduced cognitive abilities and higher levels of academic stress. Furthermore, sedentary lifestyles, often compounded by the overuse of digital devices for entertainment, further exacerbate cognitive decline and emotional difficulties. However, many schools and families do not prioritize promoting healthy eating habits or encouraging regular physical activity, potentially overlooking an important avenue for enhancing students’ academic performance.
Time management issues also present a significant challenge in secondary schools. Students often struggle with balancing academic demands with extracurricular activities, family responsibilities, and social engagements. Poor time management can lead to procrastination, increased stress, and ultimately lower academic performance. Moreover, many students lack the skills necessary to effectively prioritize tasks and manage their time efficiently. While some schools offer programs to help students develop these skills, there is insufficient integration of time management training into the core educational curriculum. As a result, students may not be fully equipped to handle the pressures of their academic and personal lives, leading to negative outcomes in both their learning ability and mental health.
The lack of comprehensive strategies to address these lifestyle factors within the school system represents a critical gap in current educational practices. While some schools have implemented wellness programs focusing on physical health and emotional well-being, there is still a need for a holistic approach that integrates lifestyle factors—such as sleep, nutrition, physical activity, and time management—into the broader framework of academic achievement. Without a coordinated effort to address these lifestyle factors in conjunction with academic learning, students will continue to face barriers that hinder their academic success and personal development.
In light of these challenges, this research aims to examine the relationship between students’ lifestyle choices and their learning ability in secondary schools. By understanding how factors such as sleep, diet, physical activity, and time management affect students’ cognitive function and academic performance, this study seeks to provide insights that could inform educational policies and interventions. Identifying effective strategies to improve students’ lifestyle habits can help mitigate the negative impact on their learning ability and contribute to better academic outcomes in secondary education.
1.3. Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of the study is to examine the lifestyle and learning ability of students in secondary schools. The specific objectives are:
- To assess the impact of students’ lifestyle choices, such as diet and exercise on academic performance.
- To examine the relationship between students’ sleep patterns and ability to concentrate and retain information.
- To investigate the influence of extracurricular activities on students’ overall well-being and learning outcomes.
- To explore the role of technology usage in students’ study habits and academic success.

1.5. Research Hypothesis
The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:
Ho: Students’ sleep patterns will not affect their ability to concentrate and retain information.

1.6. Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it addresses the growing concern about the role of lifestyle factors in students’ academic performance, particularly in secondary schools. Secondary school years are a crucial period in a student’s academic and personal development. During this time, students encounter increased academic pressure, and the demands placed on them can significantly affect their physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being. By investigating how lifestyle factors such as sleep, diet, physical activity, and time management influence students’ learning abilities, this study aims to provide valuable insights that can guide educational interventions to improve student performance and overall well-being.
One of the primary contributions of this study is the potential to bridge the gap between health and education. By highlighting the influence of lifestyle factors on learning ability, this study can encourage parents and communities to become more engaged in supporting students’ health and well-being. Educational outreach efforts, such as workshops or informational campaigns, could empower families to adopt healthier lifestyles, which in turn could positively influence students’ academic achievements and overall quality of life. This study, therefore, offers not only academic but also social value by fostering a collaborative approach to supporting students in secondary schools.
1.7. Scope of the Study
The aim of the study is to examine the lifestyle and learning ability of students in secondary schools. The study will be limited to selected Secondary Schools in Lagos.
1.8. Operational Definition of Terms
- Lifestyle: Lifestylerefers to the habitual patterns of behavior, activities, and choices that an individual or group engages in on a daily basis. It encompasses a wide range of factors, including eating habits, physical activity, sleep patterns, time management, social interactions, and stress management. Lifestyle is influenced by personal preferences, socio-economic status, cultural norms, and environmental factors, and it can significantly impact one’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. A healthy lifestyle typically involves balanced nutrition, regular physical exercise, adequate sleep, and effective time management, all of which contribute to overall health and productivity.
- Learning Ability: Learning abilityrefers to an individual’s capacity to acquire, retain, and apply knowledge and skills over time. It involves a variety of cognitive functions such as attention, memory, problem-solving, reasoning, and comprehension. Learning ability is influenced by both innate intellectual capacities and external factors like motivation, emotional state, environment, and lifestyle habits. Students with strong learning abilities are generally better at grasping new concepts, retaining information, and adapting to different academic challenges. Factors like sleep, physical health, and stress management can significantly affect a student’s learning ability.
- Students: Studentsare individuals who are engaged in formal education, typically in primary, secondary, or tertiary levels. In the context of secondary schools, students are individuals usually between the ages of 12 and 18 who are enrolled in middle school or high school programs. Secondary school students are in a transitional phase of education, moving from basic foundational knowledge to more specialized and complex subject matter. Their academic, social, and emotional development during this period is critical for their long-term educational success and personal growth.
- Secondary Schools: Secondary schoolsare educational institutions that provide education to students after primary or elementary school, typically from grades 7 to 12 (ages 12–18, depending on the country). Secondary schools offer more advanced academic courses and a wider range of subjects compared to primary schools, and they play a crucial role in preparing students for higher education or entering the workforce. The structure and curriculum of secondary schools vary across different countries, but they often include a combination of general education, specialized subjects, extracurricular activities, and social learning experiences.
