INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

The relationship between agricultural skills and academic performance has been a subject of study in educational research. Many scholars have explored the potential impact of practical skills such as farming on the academic success of students in various educational settings. According to Ogundele et al. (2017), practical agricultural skills can contribute significantly to the development of students’ cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains. These skills not only enhance students’ learning experiences but also foster a sense of responsibility and discipline, which can, in turn, improve academic performance. Junior secondary school students who engage in hands-on agricultural activities may develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking abilities, and an improved understanding of environmental sustainability, which can enhance their academic success.

In agricultural education, students’ involvement in farming activities provides them with real-world experiences that help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Oladele (2016) argues that students who participate in agricultural projects develop a better understanding of core scientific concepts, such as biology, chemistry, and ecology, due to the direct application of these concepts in the field. For instance, understanding plant growth processes and the use of fertilizers are not only relevant to agricultural studies but also enhance students’ overall comprehension in subjects like biology and chemistry. Therefore, the integration of agricultural skills into the curriculum may lead to higher academic performance by providing students with a holistic learning experience.

The development of life skills, including teamwork, time management, and financial literacy, is another significant benefit of farming activities for junior secondary school students. These life skills are transferable to other areas of learning and can positively influence students’ academic outcomes. A study by Kogi et al. (2019) highlights that students involved in farming activities are more likely to develop stronger organizational and leadership skills, which can enhance their ability to manage school tasks and projects efficiently. Furthermore, the discipline and responsibility required in farming tasks may improve students’ study habits, leading to better academic performance.

Adeyemi (2013) emphasizes the importance of balancing practical farming activities with academic requirements to ensure that students do not experience burnout or fatigue. When farming tasks are excessively time-consuming or not properly integrated into the school curriculum, students may become overwhelmed, which can have negative effects on their academic performance. Thus, the successful incorporation of farming skills into the school system must be well-planned to avoid these challenges.

Further research has suggested that the quality of agricultural education programs and the availability of resources significantly affect the relationship between farming skills and academic performance. Farming, as a hands-on activity, offers students opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge, build life skills, and develop a strong work ethic, all of which could potentially enhance their overall academic performance. However, the precise relationship between students’ skills in farming and their academic success has not been thoroughly investigated in the context of junior secondary schools.

While agricultural education is included in the curriculum of many junior secondary schools, its impact on students’ academic performance remains largely unexplored. Many schools face challenges in adequately implementing agricultural programs due to limited resources, lack of trained teachers, and a lack of integration between farming activities and other academic subjects. As a result, the potential benefits of agricultural education may not be fully realized, leaving students with skills that do not necessarily translate into improved academic outcomes. There is, therefore, a need to better understand how students’ practical farming skills could affect their performance in other academic areas, and whether these skills serve as an advantage or simply contribute to a broader set of life skills without improving academic achievement.

  • Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine relationship between students’ skills in farming and academic performance of Junior secondary schools. The specific objectives are:

  1. To assess the level of farming skills among Junior secondary school students.
  2. To evaluate the academic performance of Junior secondary school students.
  3. To determine the correlation between students’ farming skills and their academic performance.
  4. To identify any factors that may influence the relationship between farming skills and academic performance.

The research questions are buttressed below:

  1. What is the level of farming skills among Junior secondary school students?
  2. How does the academic performance of Junior secondary school students compare?
  3. Is there a correlation between students’ farming skills and their academic performance?
  4. What factors may influence the relationship between farming skills and academic performance?

1.5. Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: Students’ farming skills will not affect their academic performance.

H1: Students’ farming skills will affect their academic performance.

1.6. Significance of the Study

The relationship between agricultural skills and academic performance in junior secondary schools has been a subject of interest for several scholars. Research indicates that agricultural education, which involves hands-on farming experiences, provides students with practical skills that could potentially enhance their academic performance across various subjects. According to Oladele (2016), agricultural education fosters not only practical farming skills but also improves students’ cognitive and problem-solving abilities, particularly in scientific disciplines such as biology and chemistry. In schools where agricultural programs are implemented effectively, students are provided with opportunities to directly apply theoretical knowledge, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application. 1.7. Scope of the Study

The study examines Relationship between students’ skills in farming and academic performance of Junior secondary schools. The study is limited to students of five selected Secondary School in Ikorodu, Lagos.

 

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

  • Relationship: A connection, association, or link between two or more things. In this context, it refers to how students’ skills in farming are connected or associated with their academic performance.
  • Students: Individuals enrolled in an educational institution who are pursuing studies at a specific level. In this context, “students” refers to individuals attending junior secondary schools.
  • Skills: Abilities, competencies, or proficiencies acquired through learning or experience. Skills are typically practical and can be developed over time. In this context, skills refer to the abilities students acquire related to farming, such as planting, crop management, animal care, and using farming tools.
  • Farming: The activity or practice of cultivating land, growing crops, and raising animals for food, resources, or economic gain. In this context, farming refers to the agricultural activities students are engaged in as part of their education or extracurricular activities.
  • Academic Performance: The level of success or achievement a student attains in their educational endeavors, typically measured by grades, test scores, or overall progress in the curriculum. Academic performance in this context refers to how well students perform in their academic subjects, such as mathematics, science, languages, and other areas of study in school.
  • Junior Secondary Schools: Educational institutions that cater to students typically between the ages of 12 and 15, usually covering grades 7 to 9 in many educational systems. Junior secondary schools provide a foundation for both academic learning and vocational skills before students progress to higher levels of education.
