INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

The role of church leaders in the Church, particularly in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), is a topic of significant interest. Church leaders, including pastors, elders, and deacons, play a crucial role in guiding the spiritual growth of the congregation, providing pastoral care, and overseeing the administrative aspects of the church (Harrison, 2015). They are responsible for preaching the gospel, administering sacraments, and providing spiritual guidance to the members of the church. In the RCCG, the General Overseer, currently Pastor Enoch Adeboye, is the highest authority and is responsible for the spiritual direction of the church worldwide (Adeboye, 2018).

The leadership structure of the RCCG is hierarchical, with the General Overseer at the top, followed by Assistant General Overseers, Pastors, Deacons, and Deaconesses (Adeboye, 2018). This structure ensures that there is a clear line of authority and accountability within the church. The leaders are expected to live exemplary lives, reflecting the teachings of Christ in their personal and professional lives. They are also responsible for the spiritual, moral, and social development of the church members (Ojo, 2006).

The role of church leaders in the RCCG extends beyond the spiritual realm. They are also involved in social and community development initiatives. For instance, the church has established several educational and health institutions across Nigeria and other parts of the world (Adeboye, 2018). These initiatives reflect the church’s commitment to holistic development, which includes spiritual, physical, and social aspects.

However, the role of church leaders in the RCCG is not without challenges. • Statement of the Problem

• Significance of the Study

The significance of studying the role of church leaders in the Church, particularly in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), cannot be overstated. This study is crucial as it provides an in-depth understanding of the roles and responsibilities of church leaders in the RCCG, which is one of the fastest-growing Pentecostal churches in the world. The findings from this study could serve as a benchmark for other churches in understanding the importance of effective leadership in church growth and development.

Secondly, this study is significant as it explores the impact of church leaders on the spiritual growth and development of the congregation. The spiritual growth of a congregation is a critical aspect of any church, and the role of church leaders in facilitating this growth is often overlooked. By examining this aspect, the study could provide valuable insights into how church leaders can effectively foster spiritual growth among their congregation.

This is a critical area of study as the successful implementation of church policies and programs largely depends on the leadership of the church. The findings from this study could provide practical recommendations for church leaders on how to effectively implement church policies and programs.

The findings from this study could provide valuable insights into the most effective leadership styles for church growth and development.

• Operational Definition of Terms

1. 2. Church Leaders: Church leaders are individuals who hold positions of authority and influence within a religious organization. They are responsible for guiding the spiritual growth of the congregation, implementing church policies and programs, and overseeing the administrative aspects of the church. Their roles may include preaching, teaching, counseling, and providing spiritual guidance and support to members of the congregation.
