THE CULTURAL BELIEFS AND TRADITIONS AMONG ZAMBIA ETHIC GROUPS

More than seventy distinct ethnic groups, each with its own set of customs and values, call Zambia home. The Bemba, Tonga, Lozi, and Ngoni are just a few of Zambia’s many notable indigenous peoples.

Ancestral worship is a major tenet of culture for many of these peoples. Ancestors are revered because of the vital influence they are thought to play in the present and future of their offspring.

Ubuntu, which stresses the connectivity of all people and the significance of community, is also an integral part of Zambian culture. This worldview permeates the social interactions of many Zambians, who place a premium on warmth and compassion.

Marriage and family in Zambia follow their own distinct customs for many of the country’s ethnic groupings. The Bemba are one such group that have long been known for their widespread polygamy. However, among the Tonga, women are given a prominent place in society and are frequently found in authoritative roles.
