THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ETHNIC TRIBES IN ZIMBABWE

There are several different ethnic groups in Zimbabwe. The Shona, Ndebele, Tonga, Kalanga, and Venda are just a few of Zimbabwe’s many recognized indigenous peoples.Characteristics and customs of each of these communities are distinct.

Traditions and customs from each of these communities have developed separately throughout time. For instance, the Shona have a rich cultural history that includes elaborate stone sculptures, traditional music, and dancing. The Ndebele are well-known for their elaborate beading and vividly painted dwellings. Fishing and farming are traditional Tonga occupations, while ironwork is a specialty of the Kalanga. The Venda are famous for their wares in the fields of pottery and basketry. These diverse peoples are all important threads in Zimbabwe’s cultural fabric.

About 80% of Zimbabwe’s population is Shona, making them the country’s most numerous ethnic group. They have a long history of music, dancing, and art that has made them famous. The Ndebele, on the other hand, are famous for their elaborate beading and brightly colored garments.

Northern Zimbabwe is home to the majority of the Tonga people, who are widely recognized for their expertise in both fishing and farming. Westerners may recognize the Kalanga people from their distinctive pottery and baskets made by their hands. Lastly, the Venda are an ethnic group based in eastern Zimbabwe who are renowned for their distinctive architecture and music.
