Marriage traditions in Cameroon are an integral element of the country’s rich and varied culture. Marriage is revered as a spiritual bond between two people and their families in Cameroon. Marriage rituals in Cameroon vary greatly amongst the country’s numerous ethnic groupings.

As a token of their thanks, the groom’s family often presents the bride’s family with a monetary or material gift known as the “bride price.” The Bamileke and Beti-Pahuin peoples are particularly fond of this custom, though it is widespread throughout the country.

The participation of the bride’s and groom’s families in the wedding ceremony is also highly valued in Cameroonian culture. Every member of the family is usually present at every step of the way, from the engagement through the wedding. The family of the bride and groom often spend a week together to celebrate the wedding. This is especially common among the Fulani and Tikar peoples.

Many varied rituals and practices surround the wedding ceremony itself from one culture to the next. For instance, the Bamileke may have a ritual called “tso” in which the bride and groom exchange presents, while the Bassa may have a dance called the “mbom” performed during the event.

In general, there is a wide variety of practices associated with marriage in Cameroon. The importance of family, respect, and tradition may vary from one culture to the next, yet they are universally valued.
