INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

Western education, which refers to formal schooling systems that emphasize literacy, numeracy, and other academic disciplines, has been instrumental in shaping youth development in many parts of the world. In the context of Sanga Local Government Area (LGA) in Kaduna State, Nigeria, the adoption of Western education has brought about significant benefits for the youth. Scholars have identified various advantages ranging from improved employment prospects to enhanced social mobility, critical thinking skills, and access to modern healthcare and technology. According to Olatunji (2018), Western education provides youth with the knowledge and skills required to adapt to the demands of the modern labor market, fostering greater economic independence and sustainability.

One of the most tangible benefits of Western education for youth in Sanga LGA is its contribution to employment opportunities. Prior to the widespread adoption of formal schooling, many rural communities in northern Nigeria, including Sanga, depended on agriculture and informal trade for livelihood. With Western education, however, youth have access to a broader range of career opportunities, including positions in the civil service, healthcare, business, and technology. Nnamani (2015) argues that youth with formal education are more likely to find formal-sector jobs that offer better pay and job security compared to those without such education. 1.2. Statement of the Problem

Despite the notable expansion of formal education, many youths in Sanga LGA continue to face challenges in fully benefiting from the opportunities that education offers. This study aims to explore the benefits of Western education among youth in Sanga LGA, Kaduna State, and how these benefits influence various aspects of their lives, including employment, social mobility, health, and gender equality.

Although Western education is widely regarded as a tool for socio-economic development, the rural nature of Sanga LGA poses unique challenges that might hinder youth from realizing its full potential. These challenges include limited access to quality educational facilities, inadequate infrastructure, socio-cultural norms that prioritize traditional knowledge over formal schooling, and a lack of job opportunities for educated youth. Consequently, despite the increasing number of youth attending schools, the actual benefits of Western education are often not fully realized. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate whether educated youth in Sanga LGA are able to leverage their education for personal and community advancement, or whether systemic barriers continue to impede their success.

Furthermore, while much of the discourse on the benefits of Western education tends to focus on urban centers, rural areas like Sanga LGA often remain understudied. Research conducted in urban regions may not accurately reflect the realities faced by youth in rural communities, where education outcomes are often shaped by different factors, such as poverty, limited access to resources, and cultural attitudes towards formal schooling. This research aims to investigate whether Western education among youth in Sanga LGA correlates with healthier lifestyles, increased health awareness, and greater participation in public health initiatives.

Finally, gender inequality remains a persistent challenge in many rural Nigerian communities, and Sanga LGA is no exception. While Western education has been heralded as a means of empowering women and promoting gender equality, rural areas often present additional barriers, such as early marriage, limited access to education for girls, and cultural norms that prioritize male education. The study aims to examine how Western education impacts gender dynamics in Sanga LGA, specifically focusing on how it contributes to the empowerment of young women. By investigating these dynamics, the study will offer insights into how education can help address gender disparities in rural areas and promote a more equitable society.

This study is critical for understanding the broader implications of Western education in rural settings like Sanga LGA. By examining its benefits and challenges, it seeks to provide valuable insights into how education can be leveraged to improve the lives of youth in these communities, foster social and economic development, and address the specific issues they face. The aim of the study is to examine the benefits of western education among youth. A Study of Sanga LGA, Kaduna State. The specific objectives are:

1. To assess the level of awareness and understanding of Western education among youth in Sanga LGA.
2. To examine the impact of Western education on the academic performance of youth in Sanga LGA.
3. To investigate the career opportunities and prospects available to youth with a Western education in Sanga LGA.
4. To explore the challenges faced by youth in accessing and pursuing Western education in Sanga LGA.
