INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

Gospel music is a powerful tool in Christian evangelism, often functioning as a medium through which spiritual messages are communicated and souls are drawn to God. Scholars have emphasized the theological and ministerial significance of gospel music in enhancing worship experiences and facilitating spiritual transformation (Adeboye, 2020; Olayemi, 2019). However, the posture and attitude of gospel musicians—both on and off stage—significantly influence the effectiveness of their ministry. The embodiment of humility, spiritual discipline, and authenticity in worship delivery contributes to the credibility of the message and the receptiveness of the audience (Anibaba, 2018).

The spiritual posture of a gospel musician is foundational to soul winning. Posture, in this context, includes the heart alignment, lifestyle, and spiritual maturity of the minister. According to Oduyoye (2021), a musician who engages in consistent prayer, fasting, and scriptural study projects a spiritual aura that resonates with audiences, thereby fostering deeper spiritual encounters. This form of spiritual preparation enhances the anointing associated with the music, making it more than just entertainment but a conduit for divine encounter and transformation (Ilesanmi, 2022).

Attitude, encompassing humility, reverence, and a servant-leader mindset, also plays a vital role in the spiritual impact of gospel musicians. The attitudes musicians portray—whether prideful or worship-centered—can either attract or repel the unsaved. Eze (2020) posits that musicians who seek personal fame over God’s glory risk diluting the evangelistic power of gospel music. In contrast, musicians who approach their ministry with the heart of a servant often create a worship environment that invites the Holy Spirit, thereby leading to genuine conversions and soul-winning experiences.

Furthermore, the public lifestyle and moral conduct of gospel musicians influence their witness and credibility. A lifestyle inconsistent with Christian values can hinder the effectiveness of music ministry. As Ayoola (2019) notes, gospel musicians are often seen as spiritual models, and any perceived moral failings can undermine their message. The alignment between a musician’s message and lifestyle is crucial to reinforcing the authenticity of their witness, which in turn impacts the audience’s openness to the gospel (Ogundipe, 2021).

In addition, stage presence and body language during performance reflect inner spiritual conditions. Audiences can often discern whether a musician is genuinely worshipping or merely performing. According to Nwachukwu (2022), expressive, Spirit-led worship on stage inspires deeper participation and convicts listeners, which is essential for soul-winning. Posture that demonstrates submission to God rather than showmanship points the audience toward Christ rather than the performer.

In conclusion, the posture and attitude of gospel musicians significantly affect their capacity to win souls. Their spiritual discipline, humility, public lifestyle, and worship demeanor are all vital components that contribute to or detract from the effectiveness of gospel music as an evangelistic tool. As such, training and mentorship for gospel musicians should emphasize not just musical excellence but also spiritual formation and character development (Abodunrin, 2020).

• Statement of the Problem

Gospel music plays a significant role in the Christian faith, particularly as a tool for evangelism and soul winning. However, in recent times, there has been growing concern about the disconnect between the spiritual message conveyed through gospel music and the personal lives or attitudes of some gospel musicians. While the message of the gospel remains powerful, the effectiveness of its delivery is often hindered when the vessel—namely the musician—displays attitudes or postures that are contrary to Christian virtues. This raises questions about the actual impact of gospel music on soul winning in contemporary Christian ministry.

In many gospel music platforms today, there is increasing emphasis on performance, fame, and entertainment rather than spiritual depth and evangelistic purpose. Some gospel musicians prioritize public image, branding, and popularity over spiritual preparation, holiness, and humility. This shift in focus has led to concerns among church leaders and theologians about the diminishing spiritual impact of gospel music. The core of gospel music ministry, which is to bring souls to Christ and edify the body of believers, appears to be compromised when the lifestyle and attitude of the musician contradict the message being preached.

Moreover, the posture of gospel musicians—whether they present themselves with humility, reverence, and godly fear—has a direct influence on how their music is received by their audience. When audiences perceive arrogance, pride, or a lack of spiritual commitment, the authenticity of the gospel message may be questioned. This dissonance between the message and the messenger creates a barrier that may hinder unbelievers from responding to the call of salvation, thus undermining the evangelistic potential of gospel music.

The inconsistency between the public and private lives of some gospel musicians also poses a significant challenge. Instances of moral failure, scandals, or unchristian behavior among gospel artists often create disillusionment among believers and skepticism among unbelievers. These occurrences not only weaken the musician’s testimony but also diminish the credibility of the gospel message being propagated. • Aim and Objectives of the Study

2. To assess how the personal attitude of gospel musicians influences the reception of their message by audiences.
3. To identify common attitudes and behaviors among gospel musicians that may hinder or promote evangelism.

1.6. Significance of the Study

Many gospel artists are unaware of how their actions and attitudes offstage either support or contradict the gospel message they present through music. The study examines Gospel Musician’s Posture and Attitude: Effects on Soul Winning. The study is limited to selected Churches in Ikorodu, Lagos.

1.8.  Operational Definition of Terms

Gospel Musician: A gospel musician is a person who uses music—vocals or instruments—to express and communicate the Christian gospel message. This individual may perform in churches, concerts, or other platforms with the aim of inspiring worship, spreading the message of Christ, and edifying believers.

Posture: In this context, posture refers to the spiritual position, mindset, and internal disposition of a gospel musician toward their ministry. It includes their relationship with God, readiness to serve, and reverence in worship, rather than just physical body language.

Attitude: Attitude refers to the outward behavior, personality, and emotional expression that a gospel musician demonstrates in public and in ministry. It includes traits like humility, pride, sincerity, or self-centeredness, which can influence how others perceive their ministry.

Effects: Effects are the outcomes or results produced by a gospel musician’s posture and attitude. This could be positive—such as increased spiritual engagement and conversions—or negative, such as distraction from the gospel message or loss of credibility.

Soul Winning: Soul winning is the act of leading individuals to faith in Jesus Christ. It involves evangelism, preaching, or ministering in ways that result in repentance, conversion, and commitment to the Christian faith.
