Project – The extent of using extensive reading to improve communication competence among Nasiriyya English and Arabic school
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Communication competence is an essential skill that enables individuals to convey ideas effectively, interpret messages accurately, and interact successfully in social and academic contexts (Canale & Swain, 1980). It encompasses linguistic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic knowledge, allowing individuals not only to use correct grammar and vocabulary but also to adjust their language appropriately according to context, audience, and purpose. In educational settings, communication competence plays a crucial role in students’ academic performance, peer interactions, and self-confidence in expressing ideas.
In bilingual or multilingual schools such as Nasiriyya English and Arabic School, students face unique challenges in developing communication competence. They are required to master not only English, which is often the medium of instruction, but also Arabic, which may be taught for religious, cultural, or academic purposes. The dual-language environment demands that students are proficient in both languages to participate effectively in classroom discussions, complete written assignments, and engage socially with peers and teachers. Consequently, strategies that enhance communication skills in both languages are vital for students’ holistic development.
One such strategy is extensive reading, a pedagogical approach that emphasizes reading large quantities of materials for general understanding, enjoyment, and language acquisition rather than for specific language exercises or tests (Day & Bamford, 2002). Extensive reading encourages learners to engage with texts that match their interests and proficiency levels, thereby fostering intrinsic motivation to read. Unlike intensive reading, which focuses on detailed analysis and comprehension of short passages, extensive reading exposes learners to diverse vocabulary, sentence structures, and discourse patterns in a natural context.
Research has consistently shown that extensive reading contributes significantly to vocabulary development, reading fluency, comprehension, and overall communication competence (Krashen, 2004; Nation, 2009). When students read widely, they encounter words and expressions in multiple contexts, which aids in retention and practical usage. Moreover, extensive reading promotes cognitive skills such as inference, prediction, and critical thinking, which are essential for effective communication. Students who engage in extensive reading are often better equipped to understand spoken and written messages and to produce coherent responses in academic and social settings.
Extensive reading also provides affective benefits, including increased motivation, enjoyment of reading, and reduced anxiety in using the language (Mason & Krashen, 1997). In bilingual schools, where students may feel pressure to perform well in both languages, extensive reading can create a more relaxed and enjoyable learning experience. By reading for pleasure, students develop a positive attitude toward language learning, which indirectly supports the growth of communication competence. This affective dimension is particularly important in contexts where students’ exposure to authentic language materials outside the classroom is limited.
Despite the proven benefits of extensive reading, its implementation in Nigerian schools remains inconsistent, particularly in bilingual institutions. Many schools lack adequate reading materials, libraries, and resources necessary to support extensive reading programs (Afolabi, 2015). Teachers may also have limited training on how to effectively incorporate extensive reading into their curriculum. As a result, students are often confined to the use of textbooks and examination-focused materials, which restrict opportunities for broader language exposure and practical communication practice.
Additionally, sociocultural factors influence students’ reading habits. In some Nigerian households, reading is not actively encouraged, and students may lack access to books at home (Oladele, 2017). The pervasive influence of digital media, television, and social networks further reduces the time students spend on reading. These factors highlight the need for schools to implement structured reading programs and strategies that can stimulate students’ interest in extensive reading and enhance their communication competence.
Teachers’ awareness and instructional strategies are crucial in promoting extensive reading. Educators who understand the benefits of extensive reading are more likely to provide opportunities for students to engage in reading beyond the classroom (Renandya & Jacobs, 2002). Effective strategies may include guided reading sessions, reading circles, selection of graded readers, and integration of reading tasks into classroom activities. The teacher’s role is not only to provide access to materials but also to motivate students, monitor their progress, and create a reading-friendly environment that fosters communication competence.
Given these factors, examining the extent to which extensive reading is practiced in Nasiriyya English and Arabic School is vital. Understanding the availability of reading materials, the techniques employed by teachers, and the level of student engagement can provide insights into how communication competence can be enhanced through reading. This study seeks to fill the research gap in the Nigerian bilingual school context, where empirical evidence on extensive reading practices is limited.
In conclusion, extensive reading represents a powerful tool for developing communication competence among students, particularly in bilingual schools where proficiency in multiple languages is essential. By encouraging regular reading, providing diverse materials, and employing effective instructional strategies, schools can enhance students’ linguistic, cognitive, and affective skills. The current study, therefore, aims to examine the extent of using extensive reading to improve communication competence among students of Nasiriyya English and Arabic School, offering recommendations for teachers, administrators, and policymakers.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Effective communication in English remains a significant challenge for many secondary school students in Nigeria. Despite English being the official language of instruction in most schools, students often struggle to convey their thoughts clearly, construct grammatically correct sentences, and interpret messages accurately. These deficiencies negatively affect not only their academic performance but also their social interactions with peers and teachers, limiting their confidence and overall participation in school activities (Ubah, 2018). The problem is particularly pronounced in bilingual schools where students must divide their attention between English and another language, such as Arabic.
At Nasiriyya English and Arabic School, students are exposed to English regularly in classroom lessons, yet there is limited structured engagement in extensive reading activities. Most of the reading practices focus on intensive, examination-oriented tasks, which emphasize rote memorization and comprehension of short texts rather than encouraging reading for pleasure, broad understanding, or practical language use. This narrow focus restricts students’ exposure to a variety of vocabulary, sentence structures, and discourse patterns, which are essential for developing robust communication competence.
The limited engagement in extensive reading has resulted in several observable challenges among students. Many exhibit poor vocabulary acquisition, struggle with sentence construction, and demonstrate weak comprehension skills. These gaps hinder students’ ability to participate effectively in classroom discussions, express ideas clearly in writing, and understand spoken English in academic and social contexts. In addition, the lack of regular reading for enjoyment or independent exploration of texts reduces students’ motivation to develop their language skills outside the classroom environment.
Another significant concern is the limited empirical research on the role of extensive reading in enhancing communication competence within Nigerian bilingual schools. Most studies on reading practices in Nigeria have focused on monolingual contexts or intensive reading approaches, leaving a research gap regarding the effectiveness of extensive reading in promoting communication skills, particularly in schools where English is taught alongside Arabic. Without sufficient empirical evidence, teachers and school administrators may not fully appreciate the value of incorporating extensive reading into their instructional strategies.
Teachers’ awareness of the benefits of extensive reading is also inconsistent. While some educators recognize that reading widely can improve vocabulary, comprehension, and communication, many lack training on how to effectively implement extensive reading programs. Consequently, opportunities for students to engage in meaningful, self-directed reading are often overlooked. This underutilization of extensive reading means that students may not develop the full range of skills needed to communicate effectively in both academic and social settings.
In view of these challenges, it becomes imperative to examine the extent to which extensive reading is used to improve communication competence among students at Nasiriyya English and Arabic School. Understanding the availability of reading materials, teacher strategies, and student engagement will provide valuable insights into how reading can be leveraged to enhance communication skills. Addressing this gap can inform the development of targeted interventions, policies, and instructional practices that foster language proficiency and overall communication competence among bilingual school students.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the extent of using extensive reading to improve communication competence among students of Nasiriyya English and Arabic School. Specifically, the study seeks to:
- Ascertain teachers’ awareness of the benefits of extensive reading.
- Identify the types of reading materials available for extensive reading in the school.
- Examine the extent to which teachers engage students in extensive reading activities.
- Explore the techniques and strategies employed by teachers to develop extensive reading for communication competence.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to provide answers to the following research questions:
- To what extent are teachers aware of the benefits of extensive reading?
- What types of reading materials are available for extensive reading in the school?
- To what extent do teachers engage students in extensive reading activities?
- What techniques and strategies do teachers employ to develop extensive reading for communication competence?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The study will test the following hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance:
- H₀: There is no significant relationship between extensive reading and communication competence among students of Nasiriyya English and Arabic School.
- H₁: There is a significant relationship between extensive reading and communication competence among students of Nasiriyya English and Arabic School.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be particularly valuable to teachers, as it will provide insight into effective strategies for promoting extensive reading among students. By understanding the relationship between extensive reading and communication competence, teachers can design lessons and classroom activities that encourage students to read widely, engage critically with texts, and apply newly acquired language skills in both written and oral communication. This can enhance not only students’ academic performance but also their confidence and ability to interact effectively with peers and teachers.
For school administrators, the study offers practical guidance for improving the learning environment and supporting language development. Insights from the research can inform the creation of structured reading programs, the procurement of diverse and age-appropriate reading materials, and the integration of reading activities into the school timetable. Administrators can use the evidence provided by the study to make informed decisions regarding resource allocation, library development, and teacher training programs that prioritize the promotion of extensive reading.
Policymakers will also benefit from the findings, as the study provides empirical evidence that can guide education policy related to reading and communication skills. By highlighting the importance of extensive reading in bilingual schools, the research can support policies that mandate the establishment of functional libraries, the recruitment of qualified librarians, and the inclusion of reading-focused initiatives within the national curriculum. Such policies can create an enabling environment for students to develop strong communication competence, which is essential for academic and professional success.
Parents and guardians are another key group that stands to gain from the study. The research underscores the critical role of parental involvement in cultivating reading habits at home. When parents encourage their children to read widely, provide access to books, and support engagement with educational media, students are more likely to develop a lifelong interest in reading and improve their communication skills. Parental support complements school efforts and reinforces the positive impact of extensive reading on language proficiency.
For researchers and academics, this study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on language acquisition, reading practices, and bilingual education in the Nigerian context. It addresses the gap in empirical research on the use of extensive reading to develop communication competence in schools where English is taught alongside another language. Future researchers can build on the findings of this study to explore additional strategies, interventions, and outcomes related to extensive reading in similar educational settings.
Finally, the significance of the study extends to students themselves. By participating in or benefiting indirectly from research-informed reading programs and instructional strategies, students can enhance their vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and overall communication competence. Improved communication skills empower students to perform better academically, participate actively in social and educational activities, and prepare for future professional and personal interactions. Thus, the study has far-reaching implications for improving language proficiency and holistic development among secondary school students.
