Project – The Effect of Sports Participation on the Social and Emotional Development of Youths in Kwara State, Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Sports participation is widely recognized as an important component of youth development, promoting physical fitness, teamwork, discipline, and emotional stability. Globally, organized sports and recreational activities have been used as tools to foster social inclusion, leadership skills, and self-confidence among young people (Bailey, 2017). Beyond the physical benefits, participation in sports enhances social and emotional competencies such as cooperation, respect for others, goal setting, and resilience (Eime et al., 2013).
In Nigeria, sports have historically served as a unifying and developmental platform, helping youths from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds to interact constructively. Programs organized in schools, communities, and local sports clubs are intended not only to identify talent but also to build character and instill positive social values (Omoregie & Afolabi, 2020). Through sports, youths learn teamwork, discipline, and fair play — qualities that are essential for both personal growth and societal development.
However, despite these benefits, many youths in Kwara State have limited access to organized sports and recreational programs due to inadequate facilities, lack of funding, and insufficient emphasis on extracurricular development in schools. Consequently, issues such as poor social interaction, low self-esteem, and indiscipline among youths have become common (Adebayo & Ojo, 2021). Active engagement in sports has the potential to address these challenges by providing structured opportunities for social learning, emotional expression, and positive peer relationships.
Therefore, this study seeks to examine the effect of sports participation on the social and emotional development of youths in Kwara State, Nigeria — focusing on how engagement in sports enhances teamwork, discipline, and self-confidence.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Youth development in Nigeria is confronted with several social and emotional challenges, including aggression, low self-worth, peer pressure, and poor interpersonal relationships. In Kwara State, many young people lack productive avenues for self-expression, often resulting in social deviance and restlessness. Although sports are known to promote values such as teamwork, tolerance, and emotional balance, the level of participation in structured sporting activities among youths appears low.
Furthermore, while government and educational institutions have made efforts to promote sports programs, limited infrastructure, lack of trained coaches, and minimal parental encouragement have hindered effective youth engagement (Olorunsola, 2019). Consequently, the potential of sports as a means of fostering social and emotional development remains underexplored. This study, therefore, investigates the extent to which sports participation contributes to teamwork, discipline, and self-confidence among youths in Kwara State, Nigeria.
