INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The global demand for infrastructure and housing continues to increase with the rapid pace of urbanization, population growth, and industrialization. This growth has consequently led to an upsurge in the use of various building materials, many of which have considerable environmental implications (Ali & Al Nsairat, 2009). Building materials form the backbone of construction and significantly influence the sustainability of the built environment throughout a building’s life cycle — from production and transportation to usage and demolition (Kibert, 2016).
The construction industry has been identified as one of the largest consumers of natural resources and energy, and a major contributor to environmental degradation through pollution, waste generation, and greenhouse gas emissions (Pacheco-Torgal & Jalali, 2011). Unsustainable extraction and manufacturing of building materials such as cement, steel, and timber have led to resource depletion, deforestation, soil erosion, and increased carbon footprint. In contrast, sustainable building materials—those that are locally available, energy-efficient, recyclable, and environmentally friendly—can significantly reduce the negative impact of construction on the ecosystem (Bribián, Capilla, & Usón, 2011).
In Nigeria, particularly within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, the high demand for housing and infrastructural development has triggered extensive use of both conventional and modern building materials. However, many of these materials are sourced or produced through processes that contribute to environmental pollution and degradation (Oluwunmi, Akinjare, & Ayedun, 2016). The rapid urban expansion in Abuja has heightened environmental concerns such as air pollution from cement factories, deforestation for timber, energy-intensive construction processes, and improper waste disposal (Ede, 2010).
Given the global movement towards sustainable development, it is imperative to assess the environmental performance of building materials used in Abuja and determine how their selection, sourcing, and application impact environmental sustainability. This study therefore examines the relationship between building material use and environmental sustainability, with the goal of promoting eco-friendly practices in the construction sector of FCT Abuja.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The increasing rate of construction in FCT Abuja has led to the massive use of building materials whose production and application often have adverse environmental consequences. The dependence on materials like cement, aluminum, steel, and imported finishing products has resulted in high energy consumption, carbon emissions, and waste generation (Oluwunmi et al., 2016). In many construction projects, little attention is paid to the environmental costs of material choices, while sustainable or locally sourced alternatives such as compressed earth blocks, bamboo, and recycled aggregates are underutilized (Abiola & Olatunji, 2020).
Furthermore, the lack of regulatory enforcement on green construction and limited awareness among builders and clients have perpetuated unsustainable practices. Despite the existence of global frameworks such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 11 and 12), and Nigeria’s National Building Code emphasizing sustainable practices, implementation remains weak (Nwokoro & Onukwube, 2011). Consequently, there is a need to evaluate how the use of building materials in FCT Abuja affects environmental sustainability and to recommend strategies for promoting eco-conscious construction practices.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The main aim of this study is to assess the impact of building materials on environmental sustainability in FCT Abuja.
The specific objectives are to:

Identify the common types of building materials used in construction projects within FCT Abuja.

Examine the environmental effects associated with the production and use of these materials.

Assess the level of awareness and adoption of sustainable building materials among construction professionals.

1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions guide the study:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
To guide the analysis, the following hypothesis is proposed:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between the use of sustainable building materials and environmental sustainability in FCT Abuja.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between the use of sustainable building materials and environmental sustainability in FCT Abuja.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several reasons. It provides empirical evidence on the environmental consequences of building material choices, contributing to the discourse on sustainable construction in Nigeria. The findings will be beneficial to architects, builders, engineers, and policymakers by highlighting environmentally friendly alternatives and encouraging resource-efficient construction practices.
Additionally, the study supports the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (particularly SDG 11 on sustainable cities and communities and SDG 12 on responsible consumption and production). It will also assist governmental bodies such as the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) in formulating and enforcing policies that promote sustainable building material use. Finally, it serves as a useful reference for future researchers in environmental management, architecture, and construction technology.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This research focuses on the impact of building materials on environmental sustainability within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. The study examines both conventional materials (such as cement, steel, and glass) and sustainable alternatives (such as laterite blocks, bamboo, and recycled materials). The spatial scope covers selected construction sites, material suppliers, and professional bodies operating within Abuja Municipal, Bwari, and Gwagwalada Areas. The temporal focus spans construction activities and environmental impacts observed between 2020 and 2025.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The study may face some constraints such as difficulty in accessing data from private construction firms, limited availability of detailed environmental performance records, and reluctance of stakeholders to disclose material sourcing information. Time and financial limitations may also restrict the number of sites visited. Nonetheless, efforts will be made to ensure that these limitations do not compromise the validity and reliability of the study findings.
