INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Language is one of the most powerful tools available to humanity. It is not merely a vehicle for communication but also a means of constructing social realities, exercising authority, and consolidating power. In political contexts, language plays an especially significant role because it serves as the primary medium through which politicians convey ideologies, justify decisions, influence public opinion, and maintain legitimacy. The interplay between language and power, therefore, becomes an essential field of study, particularly within societies where political rhetoric often determines both leadership success and national direction (Fairclough, 1989; van Dijk, 1997).

In Nigeria, political communication has evolved significantly since the inception of the Fourth Republic in 1999. The transition from military dictatorship to democratic governance brought with it a new emphasis on persuasive and symbolic discourse as a means of mobilizing citizens and legitimizing authority. Politicians, through their speeches, have sought to craft narratives of unity, progress, and transformation while also employing subtle linguistic strategies to assert dominance, manage crises, and manipulate public sentiment (Opeibi, 2009; Ayoola, 2005). Language in this sense becomes a powerful weapon—capable of inspiring change or inciting division.

Discourse analysis, as a methodological and theoretical approach, provides tools for understanding how language is used to enact, reproduce, and challenge power relations in society (Fairclough, 2010). By examining the linguistic choices in political speeches—such as metaphors, modality, pronoun usage, and rhetorical appeals—scholars can uncover the underlying ideologies and assumptions that shape political thought and practice. In the Nigerian context, political leaders such as Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, and Muhammadu Buhari have used language not only to define policy directions but also to construct national identity and legitimize their regimes (Akinwotu, 2013; Adegoju, 2008).

Moreover, political discourse in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic is deeply intertwined with socio-cultural realities. Issues such as ethnicity, religion, corruption, insecurity, and economic inequality are frequently reflected in political speeches. The linguistic framing of these issues often determines how they are perceived by the public. For instance, politicians may invoke notions of “change,” “unity,” or “renewal” to build solidarity, or they may use divisive language to consolidate support along regional or ethnic lines. Thus, analyzing political speeches through the lens of discourse reveals not only linguistic patterns but also the dynamics of power and ideology that underpin Nigeria’s democratic experience.

Therefore, this study seeks to examine how language functions as a tool of power in selected political speeches delivered in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. It aims to explore the linguistic strategies, ideological constructions, and discourse patterns that shape political communication and influence public perception in the Nigerian political landscape.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Political speeches in Nigeria are not neutral acts of communication; rather, they are loaded with ideological undertones and power-driven intentions. Over the years, Nigerian politicians have utilized language as a strategic instrument to legitimize authority, manage opposition, and manipulate public consciousness. The language of politics has become increasingly characterized by persuasive rhetoric, emotional appeal, and sometimes deceptive discourse that seeks to obscure underlying socio-political contradictions (Oyeleye, 2005; Taiwo, 2007).

Despite the proliferation of political discourse in media and public spaces, there has been limited systematic investigation into how language functions as an instrument of power within the context of Nigeria’s democratic governance. Many studies have examined the content of political speeches, but few have employed critical discourse analysis to uncover the ideological structures and linguistic mechanisms that sustain political dominance and shape public opinion (Fairclough, 2010; van Dijk, 2008). Consequently, there exists a gap in understanding how linguistic features—such as pronoun usage (“we,” “they”), metaphors (“war against corruption”), and modality (“must,” “should”)—are strategically employed to construct authority and legitimize political agendas.

Furthermore, in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, political leaders have frequently invoked rhetoric centered on democracy, unity, and national rebirth. Yet, the actual socio-political realities—marked by inequality, insecurity, and corruption—often contradict these rhetorical ideals. This dissonance between language and practice raises critical questions about the performative power of political discourse: How do politicians use language to maintain hegemony? What ideological assumptions are embedded in their speeches? How do linguistic strategies influence citizens’ perceptions of leadership and governance?

This study, therefore, seeks to fill this analytical gap by providing a critical discourse analysis of selected political speeches in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. It aims to reveal the intricate relationship between language and power, highlighting how linguistic choices reflect, sustain, or challenge political ideologies in Nigeria’s democratic process.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine how language functions as a tool of power in political speeches within Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Analyze the linguistic and rhetorical strategies used by Nigerian politicians to assert power and authority.

2. Identify the ideological structures embedded within selected political speeches.

3. Examine how linguistic choices reflect and reinforce political dominance and hegemony.

4. Evaluate the role of political discourse in shaping public perception and national identity.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What linguistic and rhetorical strategies do Nigerian politicians employ in their speeches to assert power?

2. How do political speeches in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic reflect ideological assumptions and structures?

3. In what ways does political discourse function as a tool for maintaining or challenging power relations?

4. How do the linguistic features of political speeches shape public perception and political legitimacy?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

To guide the study, the following hypothesis is formulated:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between linguistic strategies used in political speeches and the expression of power in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between linguistic strategies used in political speeches and the expression of power in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons. First, it contributes to the growing body of research on discourse analysis by applying critical linguistic theories to the Nigerian political context. It advances scholarly understanding of how language functions as a mechanism of power and control in political communication. Secondly, it provides insights into the ideological and rhetorical patterns of Nigerian politicians, thereby deepening our understanding of democratic communication and leadership discourse.

For students and scholars of English, linguistics, and political communication, this study offers a model for interdisciplinary research that connects language, politics, and society. For policymakers, journalists, and the electorate, the study serves as an eye-opener on how political language can influence perception, promote bias, or foster unity. Finally, it underscores the importance of critical literacy in interpreting political messages, helping citizens become more discerning consumers of political discourse.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on selected political speeches delivered by key Nigerian leaders in the Fourth Republic (1999–2023), including presidential inaugural addresses, independence day speeches, and campaign declarations. The analysis employs the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), particularly Fairclough’s (1989, 2010) model, to examine linguistic features such as lexical choices, modality, metaphors, and pronoun use. The study limits itself to English-language speeches as delivered by presidents and major political figures.
