Project – Corruption and Governance in Nigerian Sports Federations: Implications for Athletes’ Performance and National Sports Development.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Sports play a significant role in national development, social integration, economic empowerment, and international image-building. Over the years, Nigeria has produced world-class athletes in athletics, football, boxing, para-sports, and other disciplines. However, despite the enormous potential and talent available in the country, national sports development has not reached the level expected for a nation with Nigeria’s population and resources. One major challenge hindering the growth of sports in Nigeria is corruption within sports federations.
Corruption—defined as the abuse of public office for personal gain—has long been identified as a systemic problem in Nigeria. In the context of sports governance, corruption manifests in several ways, including misappropriation of funds, lack of transparency in athlete selection processes, diversion of training resources, favouritism, bribery, poor accountability, and leadership struggles within federations. These practices undermine the effective functioning of sports bodies and limit their ability to provide athletes with world-class training facilities, welfare support, and competitive opportunities (Odey & Ekpe, 2019).
Studies have shown that governance structures in many Nigerian sports federations are weak, politicised, and often characterised by internal conflicts between board members, coaches, and administrators (Akindes & Ferrand, 2018). The absence of clear accountability mechanisms and the influence of powerful stakeholders contribute to governance failures. The resultant effect is inadequate preparation for competitions, poor athlete welfare, lack of developmental programmes, inconsistent training schedules, and low morale among athletes.
These governance weaknesses have had direct implications for athletes’ performance at national and international levels. Instances of athletes protesting unpaid allowances, withdrawing from competitions due to poor logistics, or suffering from inadequate preparation have been widely documented in the Nigerian media (Adedoja, 2020). Many talented athletes migrate to other countries in search of better support systems. Despite federal and state government investments in sports, the expected improvement in national sports development has not materialised, raising concerns about how corruption continues to erode progress.
Therefore, assessing corruption and governance failures within Nigerian sports federations is crucial for understanding their implications on athletes’ performance and the broader national sports development agenda. This study examines how corruption undermines the integrity, effectiveness, and developmental capacity of Nigerian sports federations.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Corruption has become entrenched in the operations of many Nigerian sports federations, posing a significant threat to the country’s sports development goals. Despite the existence of formal rules, constitutions, and regulatory frameworks designed to ensure transparency and accountability, several sports federations have been repeatedly implicated in financial scandals, mismanagement of funds, and administrative malpractice.
There have been documented cases where funds meant for training camps, international competitions, equipment procurement, and athlete allowances were either delayed, diverted, or unaccounted for. In many instances, athletes are left stranded at competition venues due to poor logistics, or forced to train under substandard conditions because federation officials failed to disburse funds appropriately. These issues negatively affect athletes’ physical readiness, psychological confidence, and overall performance.
Furthermore, the lack of transparent selection processes has bred distrust among athletes and stakeholders. Reports of favouritism, nepotism, and bias in team selection discourage meritocracy and undermine the spirit of fair competition. Internal leadership crises and power tussles within federations often result in administrative instability, which disrupts long-term planning and developmental programmes.
As a result, Nigeria’s performance in several international competitions has declined, with many athletes expressing dissatisfaction over poor welfare, inadequate support, and mismanagement. The overall implication is that national sports development continues to suffer, as corruption prevents the establishment of effective training structures, talent development frameworks, and sustainable sports policies.
This study therefore seeks to systematically investigate how corruption in Nigerian sports federations affects governance, athletes’ performance, and the broader national sports development objectives.
