INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

From the Old Testament to the apostolic era, Scripture repeatedly highlights the danger posed by individuals who misrepresent God’s word or claim divine authority without His commissioning. The early church fathers also warned believers to remain vigilant against heresies that sought to corrupt the purity of the Christian message. This historical continuity shows that false teachings have always existed as a direct attack on the integrity of the faith and the unity of the Christian community.

The Bible consistently warns believers about the presence and influence of false doctrines, emphasizing the need for spiritual discernment. Jesus Himself cautioned that “many false prophets will rise and deceive many” (Matthew 24:11), a prophecy that underscores the deceptive and widespread nature of false teachings. Similarly, Paul warned the Ephesian church that “savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock” (Acts 20:29), illustrating the destructive intentions of such individuals. These warnings reveal that the problem of false teachings is neither new nor accidental but a recurring threat to the purity and survival of the church.

In contemporary times, the rise of media evangelism, charismatic movements, prosperity preaching, and social-media-driven ministries has magnified both the visibility and influence of false teachings. Digital platforms now allow untrained or self-appointed spiritual leaders to reach millions without accountability or doctrinal oversight. Many embrace titles such as “prophet,” “apostle,” or “anointed man of God” to gain credibility among unsuspecting believers. Through persuasive speech, emotional appeals, and sensational claims, they draw large followings despite lacking solid biblical grounding.

These false teachings often emphasize material miracles over spiritual maturity, focusing on wealth acquisition, breakthrough prophecies, and supernatural displays rather than repentance, holiness, and discipleship. Many promote prophetic declarations as substitutes for biblical instruction, reducing Christian growth to emotional experiences rather than scriptural understanding. Personality worship is encouraged when the attention shifts from Christ to the self-proclaimed spiritual leader. Such distortions create confusion among believers, weaken doctrinal foundations, and ultimately hinder the authentic growth that Christ desires for His church.

A major strategy used by false prophets is manipulation, which manifests in fake miracles, fear-driven prophecies, financial exploitation, and unbiblical revelations that contradict Scripture. These practices not only mislead believers but also damage the credibility of the Christian faith in the wider society. When believers see spiritual leaders engaging in unethical behavior or promoting questionable doctrines, trust is eroded within and outside the church. The resulting skepticism harms evangelism and weakens the church’s moral authority in addressing societal issues.

Scholars such as Oden (2011) and MacArthur (2013) argue that false doctrines create spiritual instability, weaken church discipline, and promote divisions within the body of Christ. Divisive teachings foster disunity by encouraging members to follow personalities instead of Christ, leading to fragmentation among congregations. In many regions of Africa, including Nigeria, the problem is made worse by socioeconomic challenges, widespread poverty, the search for quick solutions, and the insufficient theological training of church leaders (Ukah, 2016). These conditions create fertile ground for deception and exploitation.

Church growth, in its truest sense, goes beyond numerical expansion; it involves spiritual maturity, doctrinal soundness, strong fellowship, effective evangelism, and the development of Christlike character. When false teachers infiltrate the church, the outcome is often spiritual immaturity, moral compromise, and confusion about essential Christian doctrines. Members may remain in church for years without experiencing genuine transformation because their spiritual diet lacks biblical depth. The influence of false teachings thus disrupts true discipleship and undermines the church’s mission.

Understanding how false teachers and prophets affect church growth is crucial for strengthening the church against deception. It enables pastors, leaders, and congregations to recognize unhealthy doctrines, reinforce biblical literacy, and promote accountability within the body of Christ. The rise in congregations has not translated into deeper discipleship, stronger doctrinal understanding, or Christlike character among many believers. Instead, spiritual shallowness and biblical illiteracy continue to plague many Christian communities. Scholars, pastors, and Christian organizations have expressed concern over the alarming spread of false teachers and prophets who distort biblical truth and weaken the theological foundations of the church. This persistent challenge raises questions about the true nature and sustainability of church growth in the contemporary era.

In many Christian communities, the activities of false prophets have become increasingly prevalent and influential. Such individuals often exploit members through false prophecies, staged miracles, and prosperity-driven messages that lack scriptural authenticity. 1.7 Operational Definition of Terms

False Teacher/Prophet: A false teacher or prophet refers to an individual who claims spiritual authority or prophetic insight but promotes doctrines, revelations, or practices that contradict the teachings of the Bible. In this study, it specifically refers to those whose activities cause deception, confusion, or manipulation within Christian congregations.

Church Growth: Church growth refers to both the numerical increase and the spiritual development of a church. Operationally, in this study, church growth encompasses numerical attendance, spiritual maturity of members, doctrinal stability, effective evangelism, and the overall health of the congregation.

Doctrinal Purity: Doctrinal purity refers to adherence to sound, biblically accurate teachings that align with Christian orthodoxy. In this study, it denotes the extent to which a church or its members uphold biblical truth without distortion, compromise, or influence from false teachings.

Spiritual Maturity: Spiritual maturity refers to the development of Christlike character, strong biblical understanding, and stable Christian living among believers. It includes the ability to discern truth from error and remain rooted in Scripture. In this study, it measures the depth of believers’ growth and understanding in relation to false doctrines.

Manipulation: Manipulation refers to the use of deceptive, coercive, or emotionally exploitative techniques by false prophets to control or influence church members. This includes fake miracles, fear-based prophecies, financial exploitation, and pressure to obey the leader unquestioningly.

Prophetic Claims: Prophetic claims refer to messages, visions, revelations, or instructions said to come from God. In this study, the term is used to describe unverified or unbiblical prophecies promoted by false teachers to gain authority or mislead followers.

Doctrinal Deviation: Doctrinal deviation refers to the departure from established biblical teachings. In this study, it describes teachings or practices that contradict Scripture and contribute to confusion or division within the church.

Congregational Stability: Congregational stability refers to the unity, trust, organizational strength, and consistency of church members in their worship, participation, and commitment. In this study, instability may manifest as division, conflict, declining membership, or lack of spiritual progress due to false teachings.

Public Image of the Church: This refers to how society perceives the church’s integrity, credibility, and moral influence. For this study, it relates to whether false prophets negatively affect the church’s reputation in the community.
