Project – Effect of School Environmental Management on Students’ Academic Performance in Public Secondary Schools in AMAC, Abuja
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Education is universally recognized as a cornerstone for national development, social transformation, and human capital formation. Academic performance, which is a measure of students’ achievement in their studies, is influenced by multiple factors including teacher quality, curriculum, learning resources, and the overall school environment. The school environment encompasses both physical and social conditions, including classroom organization, sanitation, safety, lighting, ventilation, school grounds, and the management of resources (UNESCO, 2017). Effective environmental management in schools involves planning, organizing, and maintaining these conditions to create a conducive learning atmosphere.
Globally, studies have demonstrated a strong relationship between effective school environmental management and academic performance. Schools that maintain clean, safe, and well-organized environments provide students with conditions conducive to concentration, engagement, and effective learning. Conversely, poor environmental management—manifested in unclean classrooms, poorly maintained school grounds, inadequate waste disposal, and unsafe infrastructure—can negatively impact students’ motivation, health, and learning outcomes (Dixon, 2014; Earthman, 2002).
In Nigeria, public secondary schools often face challenges related to environmental management, including overcrowded classrooms, inadequate sanitation facilities, unkempt school grounds, poor waste management, and inadequate maintenance of school facilities. These challenges are particularly acute in urban areas with high student populations, where effective environmental management requires coordinated planning, adequate funding, and sustained monitoring (Federal Republic of Nigeria [FRN], 2013). Failure to manage the school environment adequately may result in reduced student concentration, increased absenteeism, and lower academic performance.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), particularly Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), is a densely populated urban area with numerous public secondary schools. Many schools in AMAC experience challenges related to environmental management, such as poor sanitation, improper waste disposal, overcrowded classrooms, and lack of maintenance of school facilities. These issues have the potential to affect students’ learning conditions, health, attendance, and overall academic performance (FCT Ministry of Education, 2021).
Empirical studies have established that effective school environmental management positively influences students’ academic performance. Students in schools with clean, safe, and organized learning environments tend to perform better academically, demonstrate higher engagement, and exhibit fewer health-related absenteeism cases (Osher et al., 2014). Despite this, there is limited research examining the effect of school environmental management on academic performance in public secondary schools in AMAC, Abuja. Understanding this relationship is essential for policymakers, school administrators, and educators aiming to enhance academic outcomes through improved school environment management.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Academic performance in public secondary schools in AMAC, Abuja, has been a subject of concern due to disparities in students’ achievement levels. Observations indicate that several schools face challenges in maintaining a conducive learning environment. Problems such as poor sanitation, overcrowded classrooms, inadequate waste management, and poorly maintained facilities are common. These challenges can negatively affect students’ concentration, classroom participation, motivation, and overall academic performance.
Effective environmental management is critical to ensuring that students can learn in safe, healthy, and stimulating conditions. Poorly managed school environments not only hinder teaching and learning but may also contribute to absenteeism, health issues, and poor examination performance. While some studies have examined school environmental factors in urban and rural schools in Nigeria, limited empirical research focuses specifically on AMAC public secondary schools. The lack of localized data limits the ability of policymakers and school administrators to design and implement interventions to improve environmental management and enhance students’ academic performance.
Therefore, the problem addressed in this study is the inadequate understanding of how school environmental management affects students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in AMAC, Abuja. The study aims to provide empirical evidence to inform strategies for improving school environmental management and optimizing student outcomes.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the effect of school environmental management on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in AMAC, Abuja.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The specific objectives of the study are to:
-
assess the current practices of school environmental management in public secondary schools in AMAC;
-
evaluate the academic performance of students in these schools;
-
examine the relationship between school environmental management and students’ academic performance; and
-
identify challenges affecting effective environmental management in AMAC public secondary schools.
1.5 Research Questions
-
What are the current practices of school environmental management in public secondary schools in AMAC?
-
What is the level of students’ academic performance in these schools?
-
How does school environmental management affect students’ academic performance?
-
What challenges hinder effective environmental management in AMAC public secondary schools?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
H₀: School environmental management has no significant effect on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in AMAC, Abuja.
1.7 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will benefit policymakers, school administrators, teachers, students, and researchers. Policymakers and the FCT Ministry of Education will gain empirical evidence to guide resource allocation, planning, and environmental management policies. School administrators and teachers will understand the importance of effective environmental management in promoting student learning and achievement. Students will benefit from improved school conditions, and researchers will find the study valuable as a reference for future studies on school environment and academic performance.
1.8 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to public secondary schools in AMAC, Abuja. It focuses on school environmental management as the independent variable and students’ academic performance as the dependent variable. Other factors influencing academic performance, such as teacher quality, curriculum, and home background, are acknowledged but not examined in this study.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms
-
School Environmental Management: The planning, organization, and maintenance of physical and social conditions in schools to create a conducive learning environment.
-
Academic Performance: Students’ achievement in examinations and assessments in public secondary schools.
-
Public Secondary Schools: Government-operated secondary schools providing education to students in AMAC.
