INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study

Educational technology refers to the application of tools, resources, and systems—such as computers, interactive whiteboards, digital textbooks, learning management systems, and mobile devices—to facilitate and enhance teaching and learning activities (Roblyer & Doering, 2019). These technologies provide educators with opportunities to create more interactive, student-centered, and flexible learning environments that cater to diverse learning styles and needs.
The use of educational technology in secondary schools has been particularly significant because this level of education forms the foundation for future academic and professional pursuits. Secondary school students are expected to master critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills, which can be enhanced through interactive and technology-driven instructional strategies (Hew & Brush, 2007). Tools such as simulations, virtual labs, and educational software not only make learning more engaging but also allow students to visualize complex concepts that would otherwise be abstract in traditional classroom settings.
Nigeria, like many developing countries, has recognized the potential of educational technology to improve teaching quality and accessibility. The Federal Ministry of Education has implemented policies and frameworks aimed at integrating ICT (Information and Communication Technology) into the education sector, highlighting technology as a key strategy for modernizing the nation’s educational system (Federal Ministry of Education, Nigeria, 2014). These policies emphasize the need to equip schools with digital tools, train teachers in ICT competencies, and incorporate technology into the curriculum at all levels.
Urban centers in Nigeria, particularly Lagos State, present unique opportunities and challenges for the adoption of educational technology. While digital infrastructure—including internet access, computer labs, and electricity—is generally more available in urban areas, disparities still exist between public and private institutions (Oyelude et al., 2020). In Lagos, schools in districts such as Yaba have begun experimenting with digital learning platforms, interactive whiteboards, and mobile applications to enhance classroom instruction, reflecting broader global trends in education.
Yaba, a socio-economic and technological hub within Lagos Mainland, offers a representative setting for studying the impact of educational technology. The district hosts a mix of public and private secondary schools with varying levels of access to digital resources, teacher expertise, and student exposure to technology. This diversity makes it an ideal location to examine how educational technology influences student learning outcomes in real-world contexts, particularly as schools prepare students for national examinations and higher education entry.
Despite the promising benefits of technology integration, several studies highlight the challenges that may hinder its effectiveness. However, without adequate teacher training, infrastructural support, and student readiness, technology may not produce the intended educational benefits (Ertmer & Ottenbreit-Leftwich, 2010; Selwyn, 2016).
Furthermore, the successful integration of educational technology is influenced by multiple interrelated factors, including teacher competence, curriculum alignment, school resources, student attitudes, and access to continuous professional development. Schools that invest heavily in technology without addressing these complementary factors often witness minimal improvements in student performance, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to technology adoption (Hew & Brush, 2007).
Given these considerations, this study seeks to explore the effect of educational technology on student learning outcomes in five selected secondary schools in Yaba, Lagos. By examining the real-world application, challenges, and impact of digital tools on student performance, the research aims to provide empirical evidence to guide educators, policymakers, and stakeholders in optimizing the use of technology for meaningful educational gains. The findings will contribute to understanding how technology can enhance learning experiences and outcomes in Nigerian secondary schools, particularly in urban contexts.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While educational technology has been widely promoted as a transformative solution for improving teaching and learning, its actual impact on student learning outcomes in Nigerian secondary schools remains largely unclear. Over the years, policymakers and educators have invested in computer labs, digital projectors, online learning platforms, and educational software with the expectation that these tools would enhance student engagement, understanding, and academic performance. However, anecdotal evidence and preliminary observations suggest that the mere presence of technology in schools does not automatically translate into improved learning outcomes.
In many secondary schools, technology tools are underutilized due to several systemic challenges. Inadequate teacher training is a primary issue, as many educators lack the skills and confidence required to integrate digital tools effectively into lesson plans (Ertmer & Ottenbreit‑Leftwich, 2010). Even when teachers are enthusiastic about technology, inconsistent electricity supply, malfunctioning equipment, and poor internet connectivity often limit their ability to implement technology-driven instruction in a meaningful way. These constraints reduce the potential benefits of technology on students’ learning experiences.
Moreover, there is often a disconnect between the use of educational technology and the instructional objectives of the curriculum. In some instances, teachers use digital tools more for demonstration or visual appeal rather than as a means to reinforce conceptual understanding, promote critical thinking, or assess student comprehension. This misalignment means that students may be exposed to technology without achieving measurable improvements in academic performance, particularly in core subjects such as Mathematics, English Language, and Sciences.
Observations in selected Yaba secondary schools indicate that, despite increasing access to digital tools, students’ academic outcomes have not shown consistent improvement over time. For example, performance in national and school-level examinations in key subjects often remains stagnant, raising questions about whether the integration of technology is effectively enhancing learning. This suggests that there may be underlying issues related to pedagogy, resource management, and student engagement that are limiting the impact of educational technology.
The lack of empirical research specific to the Yaba context further exacerbates the problem. While studies in other regions of Nigeria or internationally suggest potential benefits of educational technology, these findings may not reflect the realities of schools in Yaba, where resource allocation, teacher preparedness, and student socio-economic backgrounds vary widely. Without localized evidence, educators, policymakers, and parents cannot make informed decisions about the most effective strategies for leveraging technology to improve learning outcomes.
Thus, this study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the effect of educational technology on student learning outcomes in five selected secondary schools in Yaba, Lagos. By examining the relationship between technology use and academic performance, identifying challenges in implementation, and evaluating teachers’ and students’ experiences, the research aims to provide actionable insights. The findings will help stakeholders understand how educational technology can be effectively harnessed to enhance learning and inform policy, training, and investment decisions in the Nigerian secondary school context.
1.3 Research Objective
The broad objective of this study is to examine the effect of educational technology on student learning outcomes in secondary schools. The specific objectives include:
- To determine the extent of educational technology use in selected secondary schools in Yaba.
- To assess the effect of educational technology on student academic performance.
- To identify challenges faced in the use of educational technology.
- To recommend strategies for improving the impact of technology on learning.

- To what extent is educational technology used in teaching and learning in the selected secondary schools in Yaba, Lagos?

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The research hypothesis is buttressed below:
H₀: There is no significant positive effect of educational technology on student learning outcomes in secondary schools in Yaba, Lagos.
