INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Education is a vital tool for human capital development and national progress. At the secondary school level, education plays a crucial role in preparing learners for higher education, vocational training, and productive participation in society. The effectiveness of teaching and learning at this level depends on several factors, among which school infrastructure occupies a central position. School infrastructure refers to the physical and material facilities available in a school, including classrooms, laboratories, libraries, workshops, furniture, electricity, water supply, sanitation facilities, and information and communication technology (ICT) resources.
Adequate school infrastructure creates a conducive environment for effective teaching and meaningful learning. Well-constructed classrooms that are properly ventilated, illuminated, and furnished promote concentration and reduce fatigue among students, while functional laboratories and libraries enhance practical learning and independent study. According to UNESCO (2015), quality infrastructure is a fundamental requirement for achieving effective teaching and learning outcomes, particularly in developing countries.
In Nigeria, the state of infrastructure in many public secondary schools remains a major challenge. Despite government interventions such as the Universal Basic Education (UBE) and Education Trust Fund (TETFund), many schools still operate in environments characterized by dilapidated buildings, overcrowded classrooms, inadequate laboratories, insufficient instructional materials, and poor maintenance culture. These conditions often hinder teachers’ instructional delivery and limit students’ active participation in learning activities (Adeboyeje, 2012).
Teachers require adequate infrastructure to implement learner-centered teaching methods effectively. For instance, science teachers need well-equipped laboratories to conduct experiments, while language and social science teachers benefit from functional libraries and ICT facilities. Where these facilities are lacking or poorly maintained, teaching becomes largely theoretical, thereby reducing students’ understanding and academic engagement. Studies have shown that poor school infrastructure negatively affects teacher motivation, instructional quality, and students’ academic achievement (Olagboye, 2004; Earthman, 2004).
Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State is predominantly rural, with many public secondary schools facing infrastructural deficits. Some schools lack sufficient classrooms, forcing students to learn in overcrowded or makeshift spaces. In addition, inadequate furniture, poor sanitation, limited access to electricity, and lack of instructional facilities are common challenges. These conditions may adversely affect teaching effectiveness and students’ learning experiences.
Given the importance of school infrastructure in shaping teaching and learning processes, there is a need to empirically investigate how infrastructural conditions influence teaching and learning in public secondary schools in Birnin Gwari. This study therefore seeks to examine the influence of school infrastructure on teaching and learning in public secondary schools in Birnin Gwari, with the aim of providing data-driven insights for educational improvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The quality of teaching and learning in public secondary schools in Nigeria has continued to attract concern from educators, parents, and policymakers. Despite curriculum reforms and teacher training initiatives, students’ academic performance and learning outcomes in many public secondary schools remain unsatisfactory. One major factor contributing to this situation is the inadequate and deteriorating state of school infrastructure.
In Birnin Gwari, many public secondary schools are confronted with serious infrastructural challenges. Classrooms are often overcrowded, poorly ventilated, and in some cases structurally unsafe. Science laboratories, where available, are inadequately equipped, making it difficult for teachers to conduct practical lessons. Libraries are either poorly stocked or completely absent, limiting students’ access to supplementary learning materials. In addition, poor sanitation facilities and lack of potable water create unhealthy learning environments that may negatively affect students’ attendance and concentration.
These infrastructural inadequacies place significant constraints on teachers’ instructional practices. Teachers may be forced to rely solely on lecture methods due to lack of facilities, thereby reducing students’ engagement and understanding. Over time, this situation may lead to poor learning outcomes, low student motivation, and reduced teacher morale. Although several studies have examined factors affecting teaching and learning, limited empirical studies have focused specifically on the influence of school infrastructure in rural areas such as Birnin Gwari.
The persistent infrastructural challenges and their possible effects on teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes underscore the need for systematic investigation. Without empirical evidence on the extent to which school infrastructure influences teaching and learning, efforts aimed at improving educational quality may remain ineffective. This study therefore seeks to address this gap by examining the influence of school infrastructure on teaching and learning in public secondary schools in Birnin Gwari.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of school infrastructure on teaching and learning in public secondary schools in Birnin Gwari.
Specifically, the study seeks to:

1.4 Research Questions
The study is guided by the following research questions:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following hypothesis is tested at 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant influence of school infrastructure on teaching and learning in public secondary schools in Birnin Gwari.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be beneficial to school administrators, teachers, government agencies, parents, and educational planners. School administrators may use the findings to prioritize infrastructural development and maintenance. Teachers will benefit from improved teaching environments that enhance instructional delivery. Government and policymakers may rely on the results to guide resource allocation and infrastructural interventions, particularly in rural secondary schools. The study will also contribute to existing literature on school infrastructure and educational quality.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to public secondary schools in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. It focuses on infrastructure such as classrooms, laboratories, libraries, furniture, sanitation facilities, electricity, and ICT resources as they relate to teaching and learning.
