CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

In contemporary Christian practice, the role of preaching or sermon delivery has been central to congregational life, spiritual nourishment, doctrinal instruction, and ecclesiastical growth (Kärkkäinen, 2017). Sermon delivery involves not only the content of doctrinal messages but also the communicator’s style, clarity, engagement, linguistic competence, and cultural relevance (Robinson, 2019). Within Pentecostal and Charismatic movements, particularly in urban African contexts, sermon delivery has become a distinctive feature that attracts or deters worshippers (Anderson, 2014).

Church growth is a multifaceted phenomenon incorporating numerical expansion (attendance and membership), spiritual maturity, community influence, and organizational sustainability (McGavran, 1980). In sub-Saharan Africa, church growth has been remarkable over the past few decades, with Nigeria identified as one of the fastest-growing Christian populations globally (Pew Research Center, 2019). Lagos, as Nigeria’s most populous urban centre, hosts a heterogeneous landscape of churches—ranging from traditional mainline denominations to rapidly expanding Pentecostal congregations (Gifford, 2015).

Several scholars contend that effective sermon delivery contributes to church growth by facilitating spiritual experience, emotional engagement, and behavioural transformation (Stott, 2001; Yong, 2015). Effective delivery techniques—such as storytelling, rhetorical dynamism, contextual illustrations, and audience interaction—enhance the communicative impact of sermons, translating theological ideas into lived realities for congregants (Blamires, 2006). Conversely, poor sermon delivery has been linked to stagnation or decline in attendance, minimal spiritual engagement, and unmet congregational expectations (Wright, 2010).

In the context of Lagos, churches often compete for adherents in an environment marked by rapid urbanization, socioeconomic pressures, and religious pluralism (Hastings, 1999). Preachers are therefore compelled to adopt delivery strategies that resonate with contemporary experiences without diluting theological fidelity. Churches that integrate relevance with compelling delivery styles often show significant growth patterns, not only in numbers but in influence and community impact (Kalu, 2008). Despite these observations, empirical studies focusing specifically on the relationship between sermon delivery and church growth in urban Nigerian settings remain limited. This study thus seeks to contribute to this gap by examining how sermon delivery affects church growth in five selected churches in Lagos.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Over the years, anecdotal evidence from church leaders and congregants in Lagos has suggested that differences in sermon delivery styles influence patterns of attendance, participation, and perceived spiritual fulfillment. Some churches with dynamic preachers report rapid growth, while others with perceived monotonic or unclear delivery experience plateaued membership and reduced engagement. A review of local church reports and anecdotal testimonies reveals the following challenges:

• Fluctuating attendance: Several churches in Lagos record inconsistent Sunday attendance, which many leaders attribute to congregational reaction to sermon engagement (Adebayo, 2022).

• Perceived relevance gaps: Congregants increasingly demand sermons that address contemporary issues—economic insecurity, social injustice, mental health—yet some pastors struggle with delivering contextually relevant messages (Okoye & Durojaiye, 2021).

• Retention issues: Churches with less engaging sermons reportedly struggle to retain younger members, who often seek expressive preaching formats that acknowledge modern life pressures (Eze, 2020).

• Qualitative versus quantitative growth: Some congregations grow numerically without corresponding spiritual maturity or community involvement, raising questions about whether sermon delivery influences substantive church growth or merely attendance spikes (Mbiti, 1991).

Despite these observed trends, there is limited systematic research on the extent to which sermon delivery actually impacts church growth in urban Nigerian contexts, particularly Lagos. Most studies aggregate church growth factors—leadership, social services, location—but do not isolate sermon delivery as a specific variable. This gap necessitates a focused study to evaluate whether and how different elements of sermon delivery (clarity, relevance, engagement, etc.) significantly affect church growth indicators.

The central problem, therefore, is:
To what extent does sermon delivery influence church growth in selected churches in Lagos?
This study aims to unpack this problem by analyzing the specific dimensions of sermon delivery that most significantly correlate with growth patterns.

1.3 Research Questions

This study is guided by the following research questions:

1. What are the predominant sermon delivery styles in the selected churches?

2. How does sermon delivery influence congregational attendance?

3. What is the relationship between sermon delivery and congregants’ perception of spiritual growth?

4. Which elements of sermon delivery are most strongly associated with church growth?

1.4 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between sermon delivery and church growth in the selected churches in Lagos.

H₁ : There is a significant positive relationship between sermon delivery and church growth in the selected churches in Lagos.

1.5 Research Objectives

The main objective of this study is to assess the impact of sermon delivery on church growth in selected churches in Lagos. Specific objectives include:

1. To identify the various sermon delivery styles practiced in the selected churches.

2. To examine the influence of sermon delivery on church attendance.

3. To evaluate congregants’ perceptions of the impact of sermon delivery on their spiritual development.

4. To determine which aspects of sermon delivery most significantly contribute to church growth.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study holds significance for several groups:

• Church leaders and preachers will gain insights into effective sermon delivery techniques that positively influence growth.

• Congregational members may better understand how communicative styles shape their church experiences and spiritual outcomes.

• Theological educators may incorporate findings into homiletics curricula, emphasizing practical delivery strategies suited to urban African contexts.

• Church growth researchers will find empirical data that adds to the sparse literature on preaching effects in rapidly urbanizing, culturally diverse environments.

• Policy stakeholders in religious bodies can leverage insights for strategic planning in clergy training and congregational engagement initiatives.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This research focuses on five selected churches in Lagos, representing a cross-section of denominations known for varying sermon styles: Pentecostal, Charismatic, and mainline traditions. The study concentrates on sermon delivery as the independent variable and church growth indicators—attendance trends, membership retention, and perceived spiritual growth—as dependent variables. The timeframe covers sermons delivered within the previous 12 months.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

Potential limitations include:

• Subjectivity in perception: Congregants’ views on sermon impact may be influenced by personal preferences rather than objective criteria.

• Sampling constraints: The five selected churches may not fully represent all church traditions in Lagos.

• Data reliability: Attendance and growth records may vary in accuracy across churches.

1.9 Operational Definition of Key Terms

• Sermon Delivery: The method through which the preacher presents the sermon, including vocal style, engagement techniques, clarity, and contextual relevance.

• Church Growth: Increase in church attendance, membership retention, spiritual participation, and influence in the community.

• Congregants: Members or regular worshippers attending services at the selected churches.
