CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Education serves as the foundation for national development and individual empowerment, particularly at the primary level, where the basic competencies for future learning are acquired. Effective management of primary schools is essential to ensure that children receive quality education, which encompasses adequate infrastructure, learning resources, teacher motivation, and supportive learning environments. In many developing countries, including Nigeria, parental involvement and contributions have been identified as significant complementary inputs that can enhance school management outcomes (Abiodun‑Oyebanji, 2025). Parental contributions may include financial support, provision of learning materials, participation in school decision‑making, and engagement in school governance structures such as Parent‑Teacher Associations (PTAs).

Research evidence suggests that parental involvement in school affairs is positively associated with enhanced school performance and effective management practices. For example, parents’ contributions in the provision of school facilities and their attendance at school events were found to be linked to more effective school management in public primary schools in Oyo State (Abiodun‑Oyebanji, 2025). Elsewhere, parental engagement in decision‑making, school financing, and infrastructure maintenance was shown to influence learning outcomes and academic performance in Nigerian contexts (Samphina Education Research, 2019). Furthermore, studies indicate that parental involvement beyond financial contributions, including communication with teachers and support for children’s homework, contributes to better academic achievement (Okeke, 2024). Together, these findings underscore the multifaceted nature of parental inputs and their potential to influence the quality of school management and pupils’ educational experiences.

Despite these insights, literature also highlights challenges associated with parental contributions, such as the mismanagement of funds and unclear roles of parents in school governance, which can undermine trust and long‑term participation (Leonard, Gwambene & Mwahombela, 2025). In some contexts, the lack of transparent use of parental resources has discouraged further contributions, even though schools rely on such contributions to supplement limited government funding. This is particularly relevant in areas where public expenditure on education is insufficient to meet operational and infrastructural needs, making parental contributions an important buffer for sustaining essential services in schools.

In Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, primary schools face similar managerial challenges, including limited budgets, infrastructure deficits, and occasional inadequacies in teacher support. Considering the potential role of parental contributions in strengthening school management processes, it is imperative to assess how parents’ financial and non‑financial contributions affect the management of primary schools in this region. Such an assessment can provide stakeholders with evidence‑based insights to improve collaboration between schools and parents and, ultimately, enhance the quality of education delivered at the foundational level.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While parental contributions are recognized as important adjuncts to government funding, there remains limited empirical evidence on how these contributions affect the actual management of primary schools in Jaba, Kaduna State. In many primary schools, parents are expected to provide funds for school projects, learning materials, and other operational needs that are not fully met by government allocations. However, it is unclear to what extent these contributions translate into improved management outcomes such as better infrastructure, more efficient school operations, and enhanced academic performance.

Moreover, some studies from other regions indicate that parental contributions do not always yield positive outcomes because of challenges such as the misuse of funds, lack of transparency in school financial management, and weak parent‑school collaboration mechanisms (Leonard, Gwambene & Mwahombela, 2025). These concerns point to the possibility that merely collecting contributions without effective oversight and engagement structures may not significantly improve school management. Additionally, there is the problem of unequal parental capacity to contribute financially, raising questions about equity and the sustainability of relying on parental funds to run public primary schools.

In Jaba, Kaduna State, these issues have not been thoroughly investigated, creating a knowledge gap that this study seeks to fill. Specifically, the study aims to determine whether parental contributions are effectively harnessed to improve school management practices and whether parents’ involvement influences decisions regarding school resources, governance, and accountability.

1.3 Research Questions

This study is guided by the following research questions:

1. What types of contributions do parents provide to primary schools in Jaba, Kaduna State?

2. How do parental contributions influence the management of primary schools in Jaba?

3. What challenges affect the effective use of parental contributions in school management?

1.4 Research Objective

The main objective of this study is to assess the effect of parental contributions on the management of primary schools in Jaba Local Government Area, Kaduna State. Specifically, the study will:

• Identify the forms of parental contributions provided to primary schools.

• Examine how parental contributions influence school management processes.

• Evaluate challenges associated with using parental contributions for school management.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study proposes the following hypothesis for empirical testing:

H₀: Parental contributions have no significant effect on the management of primary schools in Jaba Local Government Area, Kaduna State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this research will be beneficial to policymakers, school administrators, parents, and educational stakeholders. The study will offer evidence on the effectiveness of parental contributions in strengthening school management, which can inform strategies for enhancing school governance, transparency, and parent‑school collaboration. Additionally, the results may guide policy formulation on parental involvement frameworks that ensure equitable and productive contributions toward primary education.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study will focus on selected public primary schools in Jaba Local Government Area, Kaduna State. It will examine parental contributions and their effects on school management practices during the recent schooling period. The study will also draw stakeholders’ perspectives, including teachers, school administrators, and parents.

1.8 Definition of Terms

• Parental Contributions: Refers to financial and non‑financial inputs provided by parents to support school activities, facilities, and operations.

• School Management: Encompasses planning, organizing, coordinating, and controlling resources and activities to achieve educational objectives.

• Primary School: A basic education institution that offers foundational learning to children, typically aged 5–12 years.

• Parent‑Teacher Association (PTA): A formal organization of parents and teachers collaborating to improve school outcomes and child development.
