INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The integration of technology into education has transformed the teaching and learning process globally. Among technological innovations, mobile learning (m-learning) has emerged as a powerful tool for enhancing student engagement, access to educational resources, and overall academic performance. Mobile learning apps allow learners to access interactive content, participate in quizzes, and engage with peer and teacher feedback anytime and anywhere, breaking the constraints of traditional classroom settings (Traxler, 2020).
In Nigeria, mobile phone penetration has increased substantially, with many students in urban areas, such as Lagos State, having access to smartphones or tablets capable of supporting educational applications (Nigerian Communications Commission [NCC], 2022). This trend has created opportunities for senior secondary school students to supplement classroom learning with mobile-based educational resources. Research indicates that mobile learning apps can foster self-directed learning, improve knowledge retention, and enhance motivation by providing personalized learning experiences (Al-Fadhli & Al-Khalifa, 2021).
Despite these advantages, the effectiveness of mobile learning apps depends on factors such as app design, content quality, user engagement, and the ability of teachers to integrate technology into lesson plans (Hwang & Tsai, 2019). Moreover, in the Nigerian context, challenges such as irregular electricity supply, poor internet connectivity, and limited digital literacy among both students and teachers may hinder the potential benefits of mobile learning apps (Adebayo et al., 2021).
Several studies globally have documented the positive impact of mobile learning apps on academic performance. For instance, Sung et al. (2017) found that students who regularly used mobile learning applications scored significantly higher in science and mathematics compared to peers who relied solely on traditional teaching methods. Similarly, in Sub-Saharan Africa, mobile-assisted learning interventions have been associated with improvements in examination performance and learner engagement (Oyelere et al., 2020).
However, in Nigeria, and specifically within Surulere Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos State, empirical research on the effect of mobile learning apps on the academic performance of senior secondary students remains limited. Most studies focus on general ICT adoption in schools without isolating the unique contribution of mobile learning apps to academic outcomes. This gap underscores the need for focused research to evaluate how mobile learning apps influence student performance in specific academic subjects and how students’ socio-economic background, access to technology, and digital literacy may moderate this effect.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Academic performance among senior secondary school students in Nigeria has been a persistent concern, with many students failing to achieve minimum proficiency levels in core subjects such as mathematics, English, and sciences (Federal Ministry of Education [FME], 2021). Traditional teaching methods, which heavily rely on lecture-based delivery, have been criticized for not fully engaging students or addressing individual learning needs (Owolabi & Afolabi, 2020).
While mobile learning apps have the potential to enhance student learning outcomes by providing interactive, accessible, and personalized content, their adoption and impact in Nigerian secondary schools remain unclear. In Surulere LGA, Lagos State, where students are relatively tech-savvy, it is uncertain to what extent mobile learning apps are used for academic purposes and whether their use translates into measurable improvements in academic performance.
Additionally, there is a lack of empirical data on factors that influence the effectiveness of mobile learning apps, including app quality, frequency of use, teacher facilitation, and student motivation. Without this information, educators and policymakers cannot make evidence-based decisions about integrating mobile learning tools into the secondary school curriculum. This study, therefore, seeks to assess the impact of mobile learning apps on the academic performance of senior secondary students in Surulere LGA, Lagos State, and identify the factors that facilitate or hinder their effectiveness.
1.3 Research Questions
The study is guided by the following research questions:

1.4 Research Hypothesis
The study will test the following hypothesis at a 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between the use of mobile learning apps and the academic performance of senior secondary students in Surulere LGA, Lagos State.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between the use of mobile learning apps and the academic performance of senior secondary students in Surulere LGA, Lagos State.
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides empirical evidence on the impact of mobile learning apps on senior secondary students’ academic performance in Surulere LGA. The findings will benefit teachers by informing instructional strategies that integrate technology effectively, policymakers by guiding ICT education policies, and students by highlighting effective mobile learning tools to enhance learning outcomes. Furthermore, this research will contribute to the growing body of literature on mobile learning in developing countries, particularly within the Nigerian context.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on senior secondary school students in Surulere LGA, Lagos State. It investigates the use of mobile learning apps in academic activities and their relationship with students’ performance in core subjects, namely mathematics, English, and sciences. The study does not cover primary or tertiary institutions, nor does it examine mobile learning apps used for non-academic purposes.
