INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The integration of advanced technologies in education has transformed the way students learn and engage with subjects, particularly in secondary education. Among these technologies, Virtual Reality (VR) simulations have emerged as a powerful tool that allows learners to interact with immersive, three-dimensional environments, enhancing both understanding and engagement (Radianti et al., 2020). VR provides students with the opportunity to explore geographical phenomena, conduct virtual field trips, and visualize spatial data in ways that traditional classroom teaching cannot offer.
Geography, as a subject, requires learners to understand complex spatial concepts, environmental processes, and human-environment interactions. Traditional instructional methods often rely on textbooks, static maps, and lecture-based teaching, which may fail to engage students effectively or stimulate practical understanding (Onwu & Sehoole, 2017). VR simulations address this gap by providing immersive experiences that make abstract concepts tangible. For example, students can explore river basins, urban landscapes, or climatic zones virtually, allowing for experiential learning that promotes deeper comprehension and long-term retention (Merchant et al., 2014).
Globally, the use of VR in education has shown positive outcomes in terms of students’ motivation, engagement, and academic performance. Studies indicate that VR enhances learning by providing interactive, multisensory experiences that cater to diverse learning styles (Freina & Ott, 2015). In STEM education, VR simulations have been linked to improved achievement, greater curiosity, and higher self-efficacy among learners (Makransky & Lilleholt, 2018). In geography education specifically, VR facilitates virtual fieldwork, spatial analysis, and environmental exploration, which can increase students’ interest and achievement in the subject.
In Nigeria, while the use of VR in secondary schools is still in its early stages, urban areas such as Lagos State are beginning to explore the potential of immersive technologies in education. Ikorodu LGA, with its concentration of secondary schools and growing technological infrastructure, presents a relevant context for investigating the impact of VR simulations on students’ interest and academic achievement in geography. Despite the potential benefits, the adoption of VR faces several challenges, including limited access to devices, inadequate teacher training, high costs of VR equipment, and insufficient curriculum integration (Oyelere et al., 2020).
The use of VR in geography education not only enhances content understanding but also motivates learners by making learning more engaging and interactive. Research has shown that students are more likely to participate actively and retain knowledge when learning experiences are immersive and hands-on (Radianti et al., 2020). However, empirical evidence on VR applications in Nigerian secondary schools, particularly in geography, remains sparse. There is a need to examine the extent to which VR simulations influence students’ interest in geography and their academic performance, as well as the challenges that educators face in implementing this technology effectively.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Geography is a core subject in the Nigerian secondary school curriculum, yet students often show low interest and underachievement in the subject. Traditional instructional approaches, such as lectures and textbook-based learning, are unable to provide the experiential and interactive learning necessary for understanding spatial and environmental phenomena (Onwu & Sehoole, 2017). Consequently, students’ performance in geography examinations remains suboptimal, with many failing to develop critical thinking and spatial analysis skills.
Virtual Reality (VR) simulations offer a potential solution by providing immersive learning experiences that can enhance both interest and achievement in geography. However, in secondary schools in Ikorodu LGA, VR adoption is still limited, and its impact on students’ learning outcomes remains largely unexplored. Teachers may face challenges such as lack of access to VR equipment, inadequate professional development, and insufficient technical support, which can impede effective implementation (Oyelere et al., 2020). Additionally, there is little empirical research on whether VR simulations truly enhance students’ interest in geography and improve their academic performance within the Nigerian context.
This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the impact of VR simulations on students’ interest and achievement in geography in secondary schools in Ikorodu LGA, Lagos State. It aims to determine whether VR-based learning improves students’ engagement with the subject, enhances understanding of geographical concepts, and translates into better academic performance. Furthermore, the study will identify the challenges faced by teachers in implementing VR technology, providing insights for policymakers, school administrators, and educators.
1.3 Research Questions

1.4 Research Hypothesis
The study will test the following hypothesis at a 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: VR simulations do not have a significant impact on students’ interest and academic achievement in geography in secondary schools in Ikorodu LGA, Lagos State.
H₁: VR simulations have a significant impact on students’ interest and academic achievement in geography in secondary schools in Ikorodu LGA, Lagos State.
1.5 Significance of the Study
The study is significant as it provides empirical evidence on the role of VR simulations in enhancing students’ interest and achievement in geography. Teachers will gain insights on integrating VR technology effectively into lesson delivery. School administrators and policymakers will benefit from understanding the challenges and potential of VR in teaching, informing ICT adoption strategies and resource allocation. Students will benefit from more engaging and interactive learning experiences, which could improve their understanding and performance in geography. Furthermore, the study will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on VR in Nigerian secondary schools, serving as a reference for future research and innovation in educational technology.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on senior secondary school students in Ikorodu LGA, Lagos State. It examines the use of VR simulations in teaching geography, specifically assessing its impact on students’ interest and academic achievement. The study does not cover other subjects, primary schools, tertiary institutions, or non-educational applications of VR technology.
