INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Motivation remains a fundamental concept in organizational and social psychology, influencing human behaviour, commitment, and performance across different settings, including religious organizations. In churches, particularly within Pentecostal denominations such as the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), the active participation of lay members is crucial for spiritual growth, church expansion, and the realization of organizational vision. Lay members constitute the largest segment of the church and play vital roles in evangelism, administration, welfare services, music, teaching, and community outreach. Their level of participation is often shaped by the motivational strategies adopted by church leadership.

The RCCG is one of the fastest-growing Pentecostal churches globally, with a strong presence across Nigeria and beyond. Its organizational structure emphasizes volunteerism, discipleship, and active engagement of members in various ministries. However, sustaining consistent participation among lay members has become increasingly challenging due to socio-economic pressures, urbanization, demanding work schedules, and competing personal commitments, especially in metropolitan areas such as Port Harcourt Local Government Area of Rivers State. These challenges make the adoption of effective motivational strategies imperative for church leaders.

Motivational strategies in religious organizations may include spiritual incentives (such as recognition, leadership opportunities, and spiritual encouragement), social strategies (sense of belonging, fellowship, and support), material incentives (welfare support, training, and empowerment programs), and participatory leadership practices. Theoretical perspectives such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory suggest that individuals are motivated when their basic, social, and self-actualization needs are adequately addressed (Maslow, 1943; Herzberg, 1966). When applied to church contexts, these theories imply that members are more likely to participate actively when they feel valued, supported, and spiritually fulfilled.

In Port Harcourt LGA, a rapidly urbanized and economically vibrant area, RCCG parishes operate within a highly competitive religious environment where members have diverse expectations from church leadership. While RCCG emphasizes discipline, commitment, and service, anecdotal observations suggest varying levels of participation among lay members across parishes. Some members are deeply involved in church activities, while others remain passive attendees. This variation raises questions about the adequacy and effectiveness of motivational strategies employed by church leadership in stimulating sustained participation.

Despite the importance of motivation in enhancing lay participation, empirical studies focusing on motivational strategies within Pentecostal churches, particularly RCCG at the local government level, remain limited. Most existing studies on motivation focus on corporate or educational settings, with less attention given to religious organizations. This study, therefore, seeks to examine motivational strategies and their influence on lay members’ participation in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Rivers State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Active participation of lay members is essential to the spiritual vitality, administrative effectiveness, and growth of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. However, in recent times, many RCCG parishes in Port Harcourt Local Government Area appear to experience inconsistent involvement of lay members in church activities such as evangelism, departmental services, Bible study groups, and outreach programs. While attendance during major services may be relatively high, sustained commitment to voluntary service and ministry responsibilities remains uneven.

Several factors may contribute to this situation, including work-related stress, economic challenges, urban lifestyle pressures, and changing attitudes toward voluntary church service. However, one critical concern is whether existing motivational strategies employed by church leadership are sufficient to inspire and sustain active participation among lay members. In some cases, members may feel unrecognized, spiritually disengaged, or inadequately supported, which can lead to apathy and withdrawal from active service.

Although RCCG has well-structured programs aimed at discipleship and involvement, there is limited empirical evidence assessing how specific motivational strategies influence lay members’ participation at the local church level. The absence of such empirical insight makes it difficult for church leaders to design evidence-based motivational approaches that address the needs and expectations of members in contemporary urban contexts. Consequently, this study addresses the gap by examining the influence of motivational strategies on lay members’ participation in RCCG, Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Rivers State.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of motivational strategies on lay members’ participation in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Rivers State.

The specific objectives are to:

1. 1. identify the motivational strategies adopted by RCCG leadership in Port Harcourt Local Government Area;

   2. assess the level of lay members’ participation in RCCG activities in Port Harcourt Local Government Area;

   3. examine the relationship between motivational strategies and lay members’ participation in RCCG, Port Harcourt Local Government Area;

   4. determine the extent to which motivational strategies influence lay members’ participation in RCCG activities in Port Harcourt Local Government Area.

   1.4 Research Questions

   The following research questions guide the study:

   1. What motivational strategies are adopted by RCCG leadership in Port Harcourt Local Government Area?

   2. What is the level of lay members’ participation in RCCG activities in Port Harcourt Local Government Area?

   3. What relationship exists between motivational strategies and lay members’ participation in RCCG in Port Harcourt Local Government Area?

   4. To what extent do motivational strategies influence lay members’ participation in RCCG activities in Port Harcourt Local Government Area?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis at a 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: Motivational strategies have no significant influence on lay members’ participation in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Rivers State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be beneficial to RCCG pastors and church administrators by providing empirical insights into effective motivational strategies that enhance lay participation. It will also assist other Pentecostal churches in developing leadership practices that foster commitment and volunteerism. Academically, the study will contribute to the limited body of literature on motivation within religious organizations and serve as a reference for future researchers in religious studies, sociology, and organizational behaviour.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to selected parishes of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) within Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Rivers State. The study focuses on motivational strategies employed by church leadership and the participation of lay members in church activities.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Motivational Strategies: Planned spiritual, social, and organizational practices used by church leadership to encourage lay members’ involvement.

• Lay Members: Non-ordained members of the church who participate in church activities voluntarily.

• Participation: Active involvement of lay members in church programs, ministries, and services.

• RCCG: Redeemed Christian Church of God.
