INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Science education, particularly biology, plays a crucial role in equipping students with knowledge and skills necessary for understanding the natural world and solving real-life problems (Akinola & Adediran, 2020). Among the fundamental biological processes, photosynthesis stands out as a core concept that underpins understanding of plant biology, energy flow in ecosystems, and food production. However, teaching photosynthesis presents unique challenges, as it involves abstract concepts such as light-dependent reactions, carbon fixation, and energy transformation, which are difficult for students to visualize and comprehend through traditional lecture-based teaching alone (Adeyemi & Omotayo, 2019).
Laboratory-based experiments provide students with hands-on experience and opportunities to actively engage with biological concepts. Such practical approaches allow learners to observe phenomena directly, manipulate variables, and test hypotheses, which can enhance conceptual understanding and retention of knowledge (Uwaifo, 2021). Studies have shown that students who participate in science experiments demonstrate better problem-solving skills, improved analytical thinking, and a deeper grasp of complex scientific ideas compared to those taught using theoretical methods only (Okafor & Nwafor, 2018).
In Nigeria, the teaching of biology in public secondary schools often faces challenges including inadequate laboratory facilities, overcrowded classrooms, insufficient teaching aids, and a predominant reliance on rote learning (Eze & Onuoha, 2020). These limitations can hinder students’ understanding of critical concepts like photosynthesis, resulting in poor academic performance in biology examinations. Consequently, there is a growing need to explore effective instructional strategies, such as laboratory-based experiments, to improve students’ comprehension of fundamental biological processes.
Laboratory-based instruction aligns with the constructivist learning theory, which emphasizes learning through experience, experimentation, and reflection (Piaget, 1973). By engaging students in practical investigations, teachers can help them link theoretical knowledge with observable phenomena, thereby fostering a deeper and more meaningful understanding of photosynthesis (Taiwo, 2017). This study, therefore, focuses on investigating the effect of laboratory-based experiments on students’ understanding of photosynthesis in selected public secondary schools in Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the centrality of photosynthesis in the biology curriculum, students often struggle to understand the underlying processes due to its abstract nature. Traditional teaching methods, heavily reliant on lectures and textbook illustrations, fail to provide students with practical exposure to the processes involved. As a result, students may memorize concepts without truly understanding them, which negatively affects their performance in biology examinations (Akinyemi & Lawal, 2019).
Furthermore, many public secondary schools in Ikeja, Lagos State, face inadequate laboratory infrastructure and limited access to scientific equipment, restricting the opportunities for hands-on experimentation (Eze & Onuoha, 2020). Without proper laboratory-based learning experiences, students’ comprehension of photosynthesis remains superficial, and misconceptions persist. Previous studies have indicated that active participation in laboratory experiments can significantly enhance understanding of scientific concepts (Okafor & Nwafor, 2018; Uwaifo, 2021), yet there is limited empirical research in Lagos State that directly investigates this relationship in the context of photosynthesis.
Therefore, this study seeks to address the gap by examining how laboratory-based experiments affect students’ understanding of photosynthesis in selected public secondary schools in Ikeja. The findings of this research are expected to provide insights into effective teaching strategies that can enhance students’ conceptual grasp of biology, ultimately improving their academic outcomes.
1.3 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1.4 Research Objectives
The objectives of this study are:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: Laboratory-based experiments have no significant effect on students’ understanding of photosynthesis in selected public secondary schools in Ikeja, Lagos State.
H₁: Laboratory-based experiments have a significant effect on students’ understanding of photosynthesis in selected public secondary schools in Ikeja, Lagos State.
Implication: Rejecting the null hypothesis would indicate that integrating laboratory-based experiments in teaching photosynthesis improves students’ comprehension, suggesting a shift from purely theoretical instruction to more practical, hands-on approaches.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant in several ways:

1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on students’ understanding of photosynthesis in selected public secondary schools within Ikeja Local Government Area, Lagos State. It examines the impact of laboratory-based experiments on students’ comprehension of the topic and compares it to traditional lecture-based teaching. The study is limited to senior secondary school students (SS1–SS3) due to the inclusion of photosynthesis in their curriculum and excludes private schools, as resource availability differs significantly.
