INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Science education plays a critical role in equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for understanding the human body and other complex biological systems (Akinola & Adediran, 2020). Among the core subjects in the senior secondary school curriculum, Human Anatomy and Physiology is foundational for students aspiring to pursue careers in medicine, nursing, biomedical sciences, and related fields. This subject, however, is often regarded as challenging due to its abstract concepts, technical terminology, and the need for visualization of complex biological structures and processes (Okoro & Uche, 2019).
Traditional lecture-based teaching methods have been the dominant approach in many Nigerian secondary schools. While effective for delivering factual knowledge, these methods often fail to engage students actively or facilitate deep understanding of intricate biological systems (Eze & Onuoha, 2020). Students may struggle to comprehend anatomical structures and physiological processes when instruction relies heavily on textbooks, verbal explanations, or static illustrations. Consequently, there is a need for innovative instructional strategies that enhance students’ comprehension and retention of complex scientific content.
Multimedia teaching tools—such as videos, animations, interactive simulations, and digital diagrams—have been recognized globally as effective resources for improving students’ understanding of scientific concepts (Adeyemi & Omotayo, 2019). Multimedia tools allow learners to visualize dynamic processes, manipulate virtual models, and interact with content in a way that traditional teaching cannot. Studies have shown that students taught using multimedia-assisted methods often demonstrate higher engagement, better conceptual understanding, and improved academic performance compared to those taught using conventional methods (Taiwo, 2017; Uwaifo, 2021).
In the Nigerian context, the integration of multimedia tools into science education remains limited due to challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of access to digital resources, limited teacher training, and inconsistent electricity supply (Akinyemi & Lawal, 2019). In Ughelli North, Delta State, many senior secondary schools still rely heavily on lectures and textbook-based instruction for teaching Human Anatomy and Physiology. There is, therefore, a pressing need to investigate the impact of multimedia teaching tools on students’ performance in this subject, to provide empirical evidence that could inform educational strategies and improve learning outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Human Anatomy and Physiology is a critical component of the senior secondary school curriculum, yet students often struggle to achieve satisfactory performance in this subject. The complexity of anatomical structures and physiological processes, combined with traditional teaching methods that rely on memorization and textual explanations, contributes to low comprehension levels and poor academic outcomes (Okoro & Uche, 2019).
In Ughelli North, Delta State, many public senior secondary schools face inadequate teaching resources, including limited access to laboratory equipment and multimedia learning tools (Eze & Onuoha, 2020). Consequently, students are deprived of the opportunity to interact with visual and interactive representations of anatomical and physiological concepts, which can hinder understanding, retention, and application of knowledge.
Previous studies have demonstrated that multimedia teaching tools can enhance students’ engagement, motivation, and academic performance in science subjects (Adeyemi & Omotayo, 2019; Taiwo, 2017). However, there is a paucity of empirical research in Ughelli North specifically examining the effect of multimedia-assisted instruction on students’ performance in Human Anatomy and Physiology. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating whether the use of multimedia teaching tools improves students’ comprehension and academic achievement in this subject.
1.3 Research Questions
This study seeks to answer the following questions:

1.4 Research Objectives
The objectives of this study are:

To identify challenges faced by teachers in integrating multimedia teaching tools in instruction.

1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: Multimedia teaching tools have no significant effect on students’ performance in Human Anatomy and Physiology in selected senior secondary schools in Ughelli North, Delta State.
H₁: Multimedia teaching tools have a significant effect on students’ performance in Human Anatomy and Physiology in selected senior secondary schools in Ughelli North, Delta State.
Implication: Rejecting the null hypothesis would indicate that the use of multimedia teaching tools improves students’ understanding and academic performance, supporting the integration of technology into the teaching of Human Anatomy and Physiology.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant in several ways:

1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the impact of multimedia teaching tools on students’ performance in Human Anatomy and Physiology in five selected senior secondary schools within Ughelli North, Delta State. The research examines the effect of multimedia-assisted instruction on students’ academic performance, compares it with traditional teaching methods, and explores challenges faced by teachers in implementing multimedia strategies. The study is limited to senior secondary school students (SS2 and SS3), as they are more likely to have been exposed to the full Human Anatomy and Physiology curriculum. Private schools and other subjects are excluded to maintain focus on the public school context and the specific content area.
