INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economy, employing a significant proportion of the rural population and contributing substantially to national food security. Among staple crops, rice has emerged as one of the most important cereals consumed across households in Nigeria. Rising population growth, urbanization, and changing dietary preferences have increased the demand for rice beyond domestic supply capacity. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, sustainable intensification of staple crop production is essential for ensuring food security in developing countries facing climate variability.
Rice production in Nigeria has expanded over the years through various government initiatives and private sector investments. Institutions such as the National Cereal Research Institute have developed improved rice varieties adapted to local conditions. Despite these efforts, average rice yields remain relatively low compared to global standards due to factors such as erratic rainfall, flooding, drought, soil degradation, pest infestations, and limited access to improved technologies.

If the relationship between CSA practices and rice yield is not systematically evaluated, efforts to enhance climate resilience in rice farming may remain fragmented and ineffective.
Therefore, there is a need for a comprehensive study to assess the effect of climate-smart agricultural practices on rice production in Wushishi Local Government Area, Niger State.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of climate-smart agricultural practices on rice production in Wushishi Local Government Area, Niger State.
The specific objectives are to:

The study will test the following hypothesis:

H₁: There is a significant relationship between climate-smart agricultural practices and rice production in Wushishi Local Government Area, Niger State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will benefit rice farmers by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of climate-smart agricultural practices in improving yield and resilience. It will assist agricultural extension officers in designing targeted training and awareness programs tailored to farmers’ needs.
Policymakers in Niger State will gain insights into strategies for strengthening climate resilience in rice farming. Development agencies promoting sustainable agriculture will also benefit from data that can guide investment decisions and intervention planning.
Academically, the study will contribute to existing literature on climate-smart agriculture and rice production in Nigeria, particularly within the context of local government-level analysis.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on rice farmers in Wushishi Local Government Area of Niger State. It examines selected climate-smart agricultural practices such as improved seed varieties, water management techniques, soil fertility management, and climate information utilization, and their effect on rice production. The study is limited to smallholder rice farmers within the study area.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA): Agricultural practices that sustainably increase productivity, enhance resilience to climate change, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions where possible.
Rice Production: The cultivation and harvesting of rice measured in terms of yield per hectare within a farming season.
Adoption: The decision and consistent use of climate-smart agricultural practices by farmers.
Smallholder Farmers: Farmers cultivating relatively small plots of land primarily for subsistence and local markets.
