INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Agriculture plays a vital role in Nigeria’s socio-economic development, with the livestock subsector contributing significantly to food security, employment generation, and income creation. Among livestock enterprises, poultry production is one of the fastest-growing segments due to increasing demand for affordable animal protein such as eggs and chicken meat. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, poultry production has expanded rapidly in developing countries to meet the nutritional needs of growing populations. In Nigeria, commercial poultry farms are concentrated in states such as Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, and Kaduna, where urban markets provide steady demand.
Oyo State, particularly Ibadan, serves as a major hub for commercial poultry farming in southwestern Nigeria. The availability of feed mills, veterinary services, and large consumer markets has encouraged the proliferation of small, medium, and large-scale poultry farms. While this expansion has enhanced protein supply and economic opportunities, it has also increased the generation of poultry waste, including litter, manure, feathers, wastewater, and dead birds.
Poultry waste management has become an environmental concern due to its potential negative impacts on soil, water, and air quality. In urban and peri-urban areas of Ibadan, where poultry farms are often located near residential communities, these environmental effects may create conflicts between farm operators and local residents.
Although sustainable waste management techniques such as composting, recycling, and biogas production are available, their adoption among commercial poultry farms in Ibadan appears inconsistent. Financial limitations, limited awareness of environmental regulations, weak enforcement mechanisms, and inadequate access to modern waste processing technologies may hinder effective implementation.
Furthermore, there is limited empirical research assessing the extent to which poultry waste management practices among commercial farms in Ibadan contribute to environmental sustainability. Without reliable data, policymakers and environmental authorities may lack the necessary evidence to formulate appropriate guidelines and regulatory frameworks.
The absence of systematic evaluation creates uncertainty regarding whether current waste management practices are environmentally sustainable or potentially harmful. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate poultry waste management practices and their implications for environmental sustainability among commercial poultry farms in Ibadan, Oyo State.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to evaluate poultry waste management practices and environmental sustainability among commercial farms in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The specific objectives are to:

1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will benefit poultry farm operators by providing insights into sustainable waste management practices that can improve environmental performance and economic efficiency. It will assist environmental regulatory agencies in Oyo State in developing evidence-based policies and enforcement strategies.
The study will also contribute to the broader goal of promoting environmentally sustainable livestock production systems in Nigeria. Academically, it will enrich literature on agricultural waste management and environmental sustainability within the context of commercial poultry farming.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on commercial poultry farms located in Ibadan, Oyo State. It evaluates poultry waste management practices such as composting, land application, incineration, biogas production, and waste recycling, and examines their implications for environmental sustainability. The study does not cover backyard or subsistence poultry production systems.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
