INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Air pollution has become one of the most critical environmental and public health challenges worldwide. Rapid urbanization, industrialization, population growth, and increased energy consumption have intensified the emission of pollutants into the atmosphere. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution is responsible for millions of premature deaths annually, primarily due to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Urban areas are particularly vulnerable because of high traffic density, industrial activities, and domestic fuel combustion.
Air pollutants include particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O₃), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Fine particulate matter (PM2.5), in particular, penetrates deep into the lungs and bloodstream, increasing the risk of respiratory infections, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) highlights that poor air quality disproportionately affects populations in developing countries due to weak regulatory enforcement and reliance on polluting fuels.
In sub-Saharan Africa, urban air pollution is a growing concern. Many cities experience increasing emissions from transportation, small-scale industries, open waste burning, and use of biomass for cooking. Weak urban planning and inadequate environmental monitoring systems further exacerbate the problem.
In Nigeria, rapid urban expansion has intensified environmental challenges, including deteriorating air quality. Major cities such as Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja, and Kano face increasing air pollution levels associated with traffic congestion, generator use, industrial emissions, and dust from unpaved roads. Despite existing environmental regulations, enforcement remains inconsistent.
Kano, located in northwestern Nigeria, is one of the most populous and commercially active cities in the country. Kano Metropolis serves as a major industrial and trading hub, with activities ranging from textile production and tanneries to food processing and manufacturing. The city also experiences heavy vehicular traffic and widespread use of petrol and diesel generators due to irregular electricity supply.
Additionally, Kano’s semi-arid climate contributes to seasonal dust storms, particularly during the Harmattan period, when winds carry fine dust particles from the Sahara Desert. These natural dust events combine with anthropogenic emissions to elevate particulate matter concentrations in the atmosphere. Respiratory health risks associated with air pollution are significant. This study therefore seeks to evaluate urban air pollution levels and assess associated respiratory health risks in Kano Metropolis.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Kano Metropolis has experienced rapid urban growth accompanied by increased industrialization, transportation activities, and energy consumption. These developments have contributed to elevated levels of air pollutants, particularly particulate matter and gaseous emissions. Residents are frequently exposed to polluted air from vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, generator fumes, and seasonal dust storms.
Despite visible signs of air quality deterioration—such as haze, smoke, and dust—there is limited public awareness regarding the health implications of sustained exposure. Many residents continue daily activities without protective measures, while regulatory agencies face challenges in monitoring and controlling emissions.
Healthcare facilities in Kano report cases of respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic cough, bronchitis, and other pulmonary infections. However, the extent to which these conditions are directly associated with air pollution exposure has not been thoroughly quantified. Without empirical evidence linking pollution levels to respiratory health outcomes, policy interventions may lack urgency and precision.
Furthermore, the absence of comprehensive air quality monitoring systems hampers effective environmental governance. Weak enforcement of emission standards, coupled with inadequate public transportation infrastructure, exacerbates pollution levels. If unchecked, deteriorating air quality may result in increased healthcare costs, reduced workforce productivity, and long-term public health crises.
There is therefore a critical need to systematically assess urban air pollution levels in Kano Metropolis and evaluate their impact on respiratory health. Addressing this problem is essential for developing evidence-based environmental policies and health interventions aimed at safeguarding residents.
The central problem of this study is the increasing level of urban air pollution in Kano Metropolis and the insufficient empirical evidence on its impact on respiratory health risks among residents.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess urban air pollution and its associated respiratory health risks in Kano Metropolis, Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for environmental agencies, public health authorities, and policymakers in Kano State. It provides empirical evidence linking air pollution exposure to respiratory health outcomes.
The findings will support the development of air quality monitoring systems and strengthen enforcement of emission control regulations. The study also contributes to academic literature on environmental health in rapidly urbanizing African cities.
Furthermore, the research will raise public awareness about the health risks associated with air pollution and encourage adoption of protective measures.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on Kano Metropolis in Kano State, Nigeria. It examines selected air pollutants and their association with respiratory health risks among residents. The research does not extend to cardiovascular or other non-respiratory health outcomes beyond their relevance to air pollution exposure.
