INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Christianity is one of the most widely practiced religions in Nigeria and has significantly influenced the spiritual, social, and cultural lives of many people across the country. Since its introduction through missionary activities in the nineteenth century, Christianity has spread rapidly across different regions, shaping moral values, education, and community development. In southeastern Nigeria, particularly in Enugu State, Christianity has become deeply rooted, with numerous churches and denominations actively participating in religious and social life. Churches in this region play vital roles in promoting spiritual growth, moral discipline, and community unity among believers.

Despite the widespread acceptance of Christianity, traditional religious beliefs and practices continue to influence many communities. Before the arrival of Christianity, African societies had well-established traditional religious systems that governed social behavior, cultural values, and spiritual life. These traditional religions involved the worship of various deities, ancestral spirits, and sacred objects believed to possess supernatural powers. In many communities, people relied on these traditional practices for protection, healing, fertility, and prosperity. Scholars such as John S. Mbiti have observed that religion in African societies permeates every aspect of life, making it difficult to completely separate cultural practices from spiritual beliefs.

Traditional idolatry refers to the worship or reverence of physical objects, images, or symbols that are believed to represent spiritual powers or deities. In African traditional religion, such objects may include carved images, sacred stones, shrines, charms, and ritual artifacts used in communication with spiritual forces. These objects are often believed to possess divine or supernatural qualities and are therefore treated with reverence and devotion. However, from the perspective of Christian theology, idol worship contradicts the biblical command that emphasizes the worship of one true God. The Bible clearly instructs believers not to worship idols or any created objects, as seen in Exodus 20:3–5 and Deuteronomy 5:7–9.

In the New Testament, Christians are also warned against idolatry and are encouraged to maintain exclusive devotion to God. For example, in 1 Corinthians 10:14, believers are instructed to flee from idolatry, while 1 John 5:21 admonishes Christians to keep themselves from idols. In some cases, individuals may attend church services while still participating in traditional rituals or consulting traditional spiritual authorities for protection, healing, or guidance. This blending of Christian and traditional religious practices is commonly referred to as religious syncretism.

Religious syncretism occurs when elements of different belief systems are combined, often leading to a modification or reinterpretation of religious doctrines. In the African context, syncretism may arise when Christian converts attempt to maintain aspects of their cultural heritage while adopting Christian teachings. While culture is an important aspect of identity, certain traditional practices may conflict with Christian doctrines, particularly when they involve idol worship or reliance on spiritual forces other than God. According to scholars such as Kwame Bediako, African Christianity must constantly engage with cultural traditions in order to preserve biblical truth while remaining relevant to local contexts.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The growth of Christianity in Nigeria has led to the establishment of numerous churches and Christian institutions across the country. In many regions, including Enugu State, Christianity has become a dominant religious tradition, influencing the moral values and spiritual lives of many people. Churches continue to preach the gospel, promote biblical teachings, and encourage believers to live according to Christian principles.

Despite this widespread presence of Christianity, traditional religious beliefs and practices have not completely disappeared. In many communities, elements of traditional religion continue to coexist with Christian practices. This situation has created a challenge for Christian faith and practice, particularly in areas where traditional idolatry remains culturally significant. Some individuals who identify as Christians may still participate in traditional rituals, consult traditional spiritual authorities, or rely on charms and sacred objects for protection or success.

The continued influence of traditional idolatry raises important questions about the depth of Christian commitment among believers. While many people attend church services and identify themselves as Christians, their participation in traditional religious practices may indicate a divided spiritual loyalty. Such practices may weaken the foundation of Christian faith and create confusion regarding the nature of true worship. Another problem is the pressure that Christians may face from family members and cultural traditions. In many communities, traditional rituals are deeply embedded in social and cultural life. Individuals who refuse to participate in such rituals may face criticism, rejection, or accusations of abandoning their cultural heritage. As a result, some Christians may feel compelled to participate in these practices even when they conflict with their religious beliefs.

Furthermore, inadequate teaching or limited theological understanding may contribute to the persistence of traditional idolatry among some Christians. When believers lack sufficient knowledge of biblical teachings regarding idolatry, they may not fully understand the spiritual implications of participating in traditional religious practices. This highlights the need for churches to provide stronger teaching and discipleship programs that address these issues directly.

The influence of traditional idolatry may also affect the spiritual growth and unity of Christian communities. When members of a church hold different beliefs about the acceptability of traditional religious practices, it may lead to disagreement or confusion within the congregation. This situation may weaken the effectiveness of the church in promoting spiritual transformation and maintaining doctrinal integrity.

Therefore, the problem that this study seeks to address is the continued influence of traditional idolatry on Christian faith and practice among Christian communities in Enugu State. Despite the widespread presence of Christianity and the clear biblical teachings against idol worship, traditional religious practices still influence some believers. This study aims to examine the extent of this influence and explore how it affects the faith and practices of Christians in the study area.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of traditional idolatry on Christian faith and practice among Christian communities in Enugu State.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the forms of traditional idolatry present in the study area.

2. Examine the factors that encourage the persistence of traditional idolatry among Christians.

3. Determine the influence of traditional idolatry on Christian beliefs and practices.

4. Assess the role of churches in addressing the influence of traditional idolatry among their members.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Traditional idolatry has no significant influence on Christian faith and practice among Christian communities in Enugu State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to church leaders and pastors by helping them understand how traditional religious practices influence the faith of their members. Such understanding may help them develop effective teaching and discipleship programs that address the issue of idolatry within Christian communities.

The study will also benefit Christian believers by increasing awareness of the dangers of idol worship and encouraging stronger commitment to biblical teachings. Through improved understanding, believers may be better equipped to maintain their faith in the face of cultural pressures.

In addition, the study will contribute to academic knowledge in the fields of theology, religious studies, and African Christianity. Scholars and students will find the research useful as a reference for further studies on the interaction between Christianity and traditional African religious practices.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the influence of traditional idolatry on Christian faith and practice among Christian communities in Enugu State. The research examines the forms of traditional idolatry present in the area, the factors that sustain such practices, and the responses of churches to these challenges.
