INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Youth development and guidance have become critical concerns in contemporary society, particularly within urban centers where moral, social, and spiritual challenges are pronounced. Biblical counselling provides a framework through which spiritual, emotional, and psychological issues can be addressed using principles and teachings derived from Scripture. Unlike secular counselling, biblical counselling emphasizes the integration of faith, prayer, and biblical wisdom to guide individuals toward holistic growth, character development, and spiritual maturity (Johnson, 2018).

Christ Embassy Church, founded by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome in 1987, is one of Nigeria’s largest Pentecostal ministries, with a strong focus on youth development through teaching, mentoring, and spiritual guidance (Okonkwo, 2017). The church offers structured youth programs that incorporate biblical counselling, mentorship, prayer, and discipleship to help young people navigate challenges such as peer pressure, moral dilemmas, addiction, career uncertainty, and spiritual stagnation. Through the application of biblical counselling principles, the church seeks to equip youths with the tools necessary to make godly decisions, develop resilience, and grow spiritually, emotionally, and socially.

The increasing prevalence of youth challenges—including academic stress, substance abuse, unemployment, and moral confusion—has necessitated interventions that integrate spiritual guidance with practical life skills. Biblical counselling in this context offers a holistic approach, addressing both the spiritual and practical dimensions of youth development (Adeyemi, 2019). Despite its widespread advocacy, empirical studies examining how biblical counselling principles are applied within Nigerian Pentecostal churches, particularly in Christ Embassy, remain limited. Understanding the effectiveness of these interventions is essential for assessing their impact on youth empowerment, moral formation, and spiritual growth.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Youth in Nigeria face complex challenges arising from societal changes, urbanization, globalization, and exposure to diverse cultural influences. These challenges often lead to moral and spiritual crises, including involvement in unethical practices, peer pressure, and disengagement from religious life (Akinlade, 2016). While Christ Embassy Church has implemented programs that utilize biblical counselling to address youth issues, there is a lack of systematic evidence on the effectiveness of these principles in resolving the specific challenges faced by youths in Lagos, Nigeria.

Furthermore, some youths may not fully embrace counselling interventions, or they may struggle to internalize biblical principles in practical decision-making. This raises questions about the adequacy of current counselling methods, the accessibility of spiritual guidance, and the long-term impact of biblical counselling on youth behavior, spiritual growth, and moral resilience (Eze, 2018). The problem, therefore, is the limited understanding of how effectively biblical counselling principles are applied to address youth challenges within Christ Embassy Church in Lagos. This study seeks to bridge this gap by examining the practical application and outcomes of biblical counselling interventions on the spiritual, moral, and social lives of youths.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to investigate the application of biblical counselling principles in addressing youth challenges in Christ Embassy Church, Lagos, Nigeria. The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the types of youth challenges addressed through biblical counselling in the church.

2. Assess the methods used by church counsellors to apply biblical counselling principles.

3. Determine the effectiveness of biblical counselling in resolving moral, spiritual, and social challenges among youths.

4. Identify the factors that enhance or hinder the successful application of biblical counselling principles in youth ministry.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What types of youth challenges are addressed through biblical counselling in Christ Embassy Church, Lagos?

2. What methods are employed by church counsellors to apply biblical counselling principles effectively?

3. How effective is biblical counselling in resolving moral, spiritual, and social challenges among youths?

4. What factors facilitate or impede the application of biblical counselling principles in youth ministry?

1.5 Hypothesis

H₀: The application of biblical counselling principles has no significant effect on addressing youth challenges in Christ Embassy Church, Lagos.

H₁: The application of biblical counselling principles has a significant effect on addressing youth challenges in Christ Embassy Church, Lagos.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant to several groups. Firstly, it provides church leaders and youth ministry coordinators with insights into effective counselling strategies that address youth challenges, enhancing their ability to mentor and guide young members. Secondly, it benefits youths by highlighting practical methods for overcoming moral, spiritual, and social challenges through biblical principles. Thirdly, the study contributes to academic scholarship in practical theology, pastoral counselling, and youth ministry, offering empirical evidence on the effectiveness of faith-based counselling interventions. Finally, it informs seminaries and Christian training programs on best practices for integrating biblical counselling into youth development curricula.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on youths aged 15–35 attending Christ Embassy Church in Lagos, Nigeria. It examines the application of biblical counselling principles in addressing challenges related to moral, spiritual, and social development. The study is limited to the church’s youth programs and counselling activities and does not cover secular counselling approaches or youth activities outside the church context.

1.8 Definition of Terms

1. Biblical Counselling – A counselling approach that integrates principles and teachings from the Bible to address spiritual, moral, and psychological challenges (Johnson, 2018).

2. Youth Challenges – Difficulties faced by young people, including moral, spiritual, social, and emotional issues that affect their personal development and decision-making (Akinlade, 2016).

3. Christ Embassy Church – A Pentecostal church founded by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome in 1987, emphasizing prayer, teaching, healing, and youth development.

4. Youth Ministry – Programs and activities organized by the church to mentor, guide, and support young people in spiritual growth and social development (Adeyemi, 2019).

5. Spiritual Empowerment – The process of equipping individuals with biblical knowledge, moral strength, and faith to overcome life challenges and live according to God’s purposes.
