INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Marriage is considered a sacred covenant in Christian theology, symbolizing the union between Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:25–33). Within this context, the dissolution of marriage through divorce and the possibility of re-marriage present theological, moral, and pastoral challenges. While marriage is ideally lifelong, real-life circumstances such as marital breakdown, death, abandonment, and infidelity create complex situations for believers considering re-marriage. Consequently, the theology of re-marriage has become an area of significant interest for scholars, pastors, and Christian communities.

Re-marriage is addressed differently across Christian traditions. The Catholic Church traditionally prohibits re-marriage after divorce without annulment, emphasizing the indissolubility of the marital covenant (Malina & Rohrbaugh, 2003). In contrast, many Protestant and Pentecostal churches allow re-marriage under specific circumstances, often guided by scriptural exceptions such as marital unfaithfulness or the death of a spouse (Amadi, 2019). This divergence reflects broader theological debates regarding forgiveness, reconciliation, and pastoral care in the context of broken marriages.

In Nigeria, divorce and marital breakdown are increasingly prevalent due to factors such as financial stress, infidelity, poor communication, and domestic violence (Okeke, 2018). These social realities raise critical questions about the spiritual and moral acceptability of re-marriage among believers. While some Christians embrace re-marriage as a pathway to personal fulfillment and social stability, others perceive it as a spiritual compromise or a violation of biblical injunctions (Adebayo, 2020). This tension highlights the need to examine the theological understanding of re-marriage within the Nigerian Christian context.

Pastoral counseling plays a central role in guiding believers through decisions related to re-marriage. Churches often provide spiritual guidance, premarital counseling, and biblical instruction to ensure that re-marriages are consistent with faith principles. However, the effectiveness of pastoral counseling is influenced by doctrinal interpretation, cultural norms, and individual perceptions of sin, forgiveness, and redemption (Eze, 2021).

The theology of re-marriage is crucial for several reasons. First, it shapes pastoral practice, enabling church leaders to provide sound spiritual guidance to those considering a second marriage. Second, it influences believers’ personal and spiritual decision-making, fostering clarity, accountability, and moral integrity. Third, it contributes to broader academic and theological discourse by exploring the intersection of biblical teachings, cultural realities, and practical church life. Understanding how believers interpret and navigate the theology of re-marriage can inform both pastoral care and ecclesiastical policy, ensuring that re-married individuals remain integrated within the faith community.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Re-marriage among believers is a contentious and complex issue in contemporary Christianity. While the Bible provides guidance on marriage and divorce, interpretations regarding re-marriage vary significantly across denominations and cultural contexts. Some Christians view re-marriage after divorce as permissible under certain conditions, while others regard it as morally problematic or spiritually unacceptable (Amadi, 2019).

In Nigeria, the increasing incidence of marital breakdown, divorce, and widowhood has made re-marriage a practical reality for many believers. Despite this, there is limited research on how theological interpretations influence believers’ attitudes, pastoral counseling practices, and church acceptance of re-married individuals (Ogunleye, 2019). The lack of theological clarity can result in confusion, guilt, stigma, or exclusion for those seeking to re-marry, negatively impacting their spiritual life and participation in church activities.

Additionally, pastoral counselors often face challenges in providing consistent guidance, as doctrinal positions differ across Pentecostal, Protestant, and Catholic churches. This inconsistency can lead to conflicting advice, spiritual uncertainty, and relational tensions among believers considering re-marriage. Consequently, there is a pressing need to explore the theology of re-marriage among Christians in Nigeria, with a view to informing pastoral practice, enhancing spiritual understanding, and supporting believers in making informed, faith-based decisions.

1.3 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the theological understanding of re-marriage among Christian believers in Nigeria?

2. How do different denominations interpret and teach biblical perspectives on re-marriage?

3. What role does pastoral counseling play in guiding believers considering re-marriage?

4. How does theological understanding of re-marriage influence believers’ spiritual life and church participation?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the theology of re-marriage among believers in Nigeria. Specific objectives include:

1. To explore biblical and doctrinal perspectives on re-marriage.

2. To investigate how Christian believers understand and interpret re-marriage within their faith tradition.

3. To examine the role of pastoral counseling in supporting believers contemplating re-marriage.

4. To assess the impact of theological understanding of re-marriage on spiritual life and church participation.

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in several ways:

• Theological Clarity: It provides insight into the biblical and doctrinal basis for re-marriage, helping believers reconcile faith with personal circumstances.

• Pastoral Guidance: The findings can assist pastors, counselors, and church leaders in providing consistent and informed guidance to believers considering re-marriage.

• Spiritual Support: By clarifying theological principles, the study can reduce confusion, guilt, or stigma among re-married Christians and promote spiritual well-being.

• Academic Contribution: The research fills a gap in theological studies on re-marriage within the Nigerian Christian context, providing a foundation for further scholarly investigation.

1.6 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on Christian believers in Nigeria, particularly those affiliated with selected Pentecostal, Protestant, and Catholic churches. It examines theological teachings, pastoral counseling practices, and believers’ understanding of re-marriage. The research explores the impact of re-marriage theology on spiritual life and church participation but does not extensively cover sociological, legal, or psychological aspects except where they intersect with theology.

1.7 Definition of Terms

Re-marriage: The act of entering into a new marital union after the dissolution of a previous marriage due to divorce or widowhood (Okeke, 2018).

Theology: The study of God, religious beliefs, and doctrines, including the moral and spiritual implications of re-marriage (Amadi, 2019).

Christian Believers: Individuals who identify with Christianity, adhere to its doctrines, and practice its teachings in daily life.

Pastoral Counseling: Guidance, support, and advice provided by pastors or trained church counselors to individuals or couples facing spiritual, relational, or marital challenges (Eze, 2021).

Marital Covenant: The sacred and binding agreement between a husband and wife, viewed as divinely ordained in Christian theology (Malina & Rohrbaugh, 2003).

Church Participation: Active engagement in church-related activities, including worship, fellowship, ministries, and counseling programs (Ogunleye, 2019).
