Project – Influence of E-Learning Platforms on Skill Acquisition in Tertiary Institutions – A study of universities in Abuja, Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The advent of digital technologies has transformed the landscape of education globally, particularly through the integration of e-learning platforms. E-learning refers to the use of electronic technologies, such as learning management systems (LMS), online courseware, virtual classrooms, and mobile applications, to deliver educational content and facilitate learning (Clark & Mayer, 2016). In tertiary institutions, e-learning platforms have become essential tools for enhancing teaching and learning, providing students with access to educational resources, interactive modules, and real-time collaboration opportunities (Al-Fraihat et al., 2020).
Skill acquisition is a critical outcome of higher education, encompassing both cognitive and practical competencies that enable students to perform effectively in their chosen fields. Traditionally, skill acquisition in Nigerian universities has relied heavily on face-to-face instruction and laboratory-based training. However, the adoption of e-learning platforms has introduced new opportunities for students to acquire skills remotely, engage with simulations, access tutorials, and interact with peers and instructors in flexible learning environments (Means et al., 2013).
In Nigeria, e-learning initiatives have been promoted by both government policies and institutional efforts to expand access to education, improve learning outcomes, and foster digital literacy among students (Nwagwu, 2021). In universities located in Abuja, such as the University of Abuja, Baze University, and Veritas University, e-learning platforms are increasingly utilized to complement traditional classroom instruction. These platforms enable students to acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills, particularly in fields such as computer science, engineering, business, and healthcare, where proficiency with digital tools is essential.
Despite the potential benefits of e-learning, there are concerns regarding its effectiveness in skill acquisition among Nigerian university students. Challenges such as limited internet connectivity, inadequate digital infrastructure, insufficient training for instructors, and students’ varying digital competencies can hinder the learning process and affect skill acquisition outcomes (Obi & Adigwe, 2020). Understanding the influence of e-learning platforms on skill acquisition is essential for improving instructional strategies, designing effective digital learning tools, and ensuring that graduates possess competencies aligned with labor market demands.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The Nigerian higher education system faces the dual challenge of producing graduates who are both knowledgeable and skilled to meet the demands of the workforce. While e-learning platforms have been introduced to enhance learning and facilitate skill acquisition, their actual effectiveness in tertiary institutions in Abuja remains uncertain. Many students experience difficulties navigating e-learning platforms, accessing learning materials online, and translating theoretical knowledge into practical skills (Okoye & Eze, 2021).
Furthermore, disparities in digital infrastructure and internet accessibility among universities limit the equitable adoption of e-learning, leading to variations in skill acquisition among students. Poorly designed digital learning content and limited faculty engagement may further reduce the effectiveness of e-learning platforms. Consequently, there is a need to empirically assess how e-learning platforms influence skill acquisition in tertiary institutions in Abuja, identify barriers to effective digital learning, and propose strategies to enhance the use of technology for skills development.
